"Stupid is as stupid does," says Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks in an Oscar-winning performance) as he discusses his relative level of intelligence with a stranger while waiting for a bus. Despite his sub-normal IQ, Gump leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th century. Entirely without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis Presley to dance, becomes a football star, meets John F. Kennedy, serves with honor in Vietnam, meets Lyndon Johnson, speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, hangs out with the Yippies, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, meets Richard Nixon, discovers the break-in at the Watergate, opens a profitable shrimping business, becomes an original investor in Apple Computers, and decides to run back and forth across the country for several years. Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that is far more troubled than the path Forrest happens upon. Featured alongside Tom Hanks are Sally Field as Forrest's mother; Gary Sinise as his commanding officer in Vietnam; Mykelti Williamson as his ill-fated Army buddy who is familiar with every recipe that involves shrimp; and the special effects artists whose digital magic place Forrest amidst a remarkable array of historical events and people. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Palm Pictures presents a film directed by Ye Lou. Summer Palace was written by Ye Lou, Feng Mei, and Ma Yingli. This picture stars Lei Hao as Yu Hong in the lead role. Supporting roles are cast with Xiaodong Guo, Ling Hu, Xianmin Zhang, Long Duan, Lin Cui, and Xueyun Bai. Summer Palace runs 140 minutes and is not rated by the MPAA though the content would clearly receive an “R” rating from the board. None of the content seemed to be beyond that of the “R” rating. Yu Hong, a pretty young woman from a small peasant town in rural China, is accepted into Beijing University in the late ‘80s. The next 18 or so years of her turbulent life unfold on screen as she struggles with her political, social, economic, and romantic situations. Well-filmed and edited, Summer Palace was an official selection for the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Summer Palace seems to be the story of a woman who just can’t decide what she wants to do. Yu Hong’s lif ... " [More]

"1. Forrest Gump The last scene where he's talking at Jenny's grave always gets me...especially once he puts his kid on the bus. One of the only scenes I've ever actually flat out cried to.2. The Fisher King When Robin Williams finally comes face-to-face with the knight and has to face his past. It's really difficult for me to even watch this scene...it's amazing.3. No Country for Old Men Not really a tear-jerker, but Ed Tom Bell's final meditation on his dreams is amazing. His delivery is so quietly emotional...and I cried from the awesomeness of it.4. Saving Private Ryan A couple scenes to mention: the one where Vin Diesel is shot and just wants someone to deliver his letter to his father, and the final scene. Tom Hanks, you get me every time...5. Children of Men There are so many emotional scenes in this movie...I guess I'll just include all of them. Amazing movie.I heartily agree with the last scene of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, ... " [More]

"Have you lead a full and fulfilling life? Well Forrest Gump has. Come to think of it has anyone ever led a fulfilling life? The movie was funny and thought provoking. It made me laugh, it made me cry. It made me want to watch it again and again. My favorite scene had to be at the end when Forrest's son starts school and had to introduce himself to the school bus driver. The scenes were dramactic and filled with meaning. I would certainly recommened friends and family to watch this movie. " [More]

"Yes Forrest is inexplicably present at a few too many historical events. And he does get to meet a few Presidents (which is really well done from technological standpoint). That stuff is all well & good, and it makes the movie more amusing. Gary Sinise is amazing as Lieutenant Dan. But what puts this movie over the top is Tom Hanks. The scenes where he meets his son for the first time and where he says goodbye to his beloved Jenny are…well…wow. Great stuff. " [More]

"'Back to the Future' has been a favorite film of mine since I was ten years old. That was my age when it was originally in theaters and I chose it over 'Weird Science' one fateful evening. In all the years since, I've probably paid more critical attention to the film's sequels and the other works of Robert Zemeckis, mostly because the original film was nearly perfect in my mind. This past weekend, I was able to revisit 'Back to the Future' with an audience of mostly families. It wasn't screened on film, but it was a solid presentation from DVD with surround sound. I wasn't surprised that the film still held my attention, but there were some things that took me by surprise and even a couple things that made the movie seem oddly dated. For those who may not remember, 'Back to the Future' is a time-travel fantasy that follows Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) on an accidental trip back in time via a time-travelling Delorean invented by Doc Brow ... " [More]

"I think it's absolutely no coincidence that Monty Python crops on the lists here as often as they do. And guess what? The Pythons appear on mine too (though I'm more of a mainstream Holy Grailer than Life of Brian, love them both though I do).1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (which part? my favorites: "Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?" or "let's not go to Camelot, tis a silly place" or "I'm not dead yet" or "She turned me into a newt....well I got better" or or or)2. Bridget Jones' Diary (my personal fount, my favorite is by Shazzer, but she's the one who likes to say f**k a lot so...)3. Clue - ("flies are where men are most vulnerable...that's right!"...."flames, flames on the side of my face...")4. Spaceballs - ("I'm surrounded by ***holes!!" or "you're right, and when you're right you're right, and you - you're always right!")5. Back to the Future - (so many from "Great Scott" to "This is heavy" to "I am your density")My runner ups: I know you said no TV, but I gotta th ... " [More]

"While I will not call myself enough a movie buff to say its one of the best of all time, I can say that, for me, it is my all time favorite movie. The character Forest represents a child passing through a time of great strife that is the era portrayed in the movie. From Vietnam to the numerous presedential assaination attempts to the closure with death we get a chance to see what life has to offer each of us. Is fate predetermined or are we "just floating around all accidental like" is truely one of the great questions we can ask. Forest is not a smart man, but even he can comtemplate this monumental question. The film is literally about growing up and the things you can do and just how simple life can be to figure out at times and how immensely complicated it can be at other times. Forest Gump is a great movie and one that will elicit a hearty laugh and a good cry from all who watch it " [More]

"Sometimes I find single songs that I really like in movies. I love the song "Mondo Bongo" by Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros from Mr. and Mrs. Smith. There are probably more, but I can't think of them right now. Here are some soundtracks that I did like enough to buy...Titanic - And not just the one song, all of the other songs are just instrumental and they are deep and sad and pretty.Forest Gump - It really is a good mix of a lot of good songs.Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? - This is so unique and all of the songs are catchy and go together. Empire Records - This was a favorite of mine when I was in highschool. I can't say I listen to it much anymore, but it was an interesting mix of songs and brings back memories of highschool.Top Gun - "Take My Breath Away" was my favorite song for a long time, but all of them are so eighties and classic that the soundtrack has a very distinct feel to it. "This was _the_ film of its time, as far as I can tell--I remember everyone I knew went to it, people kept saying quotes from the movie in their best Forrest Gump voice, critics talked aobut how it summed up something (I can't remember what, though probably an era, I suppose). I didn't see it at the time; too much else going on, I suppose. It was on television the other night, and I watched a bit of it and was totally mystified. What did anyone see in this film? Hanks is intolerable, the image of America it evokes is at best irrelevant and at worst dangerous nostalgia. Maybe I'm just too disaffected. Maybe I'm missing something. Is there some ironic undertone that I was just utterly tone-deaf to? " [More]

Forrest Gump is the Baby Boom generation's tribute to itself, a panorama of American culture from the sleepy South of the 1950s to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. The film is a technical masterpiece, skillfully weaving together numerous cultural reference points, all without ever causing the audience to pause for thought. Director Robert Zemeckis and a team of top-notch special effects experts convincingly combined actors with archival footage so that Gump (Michael Conner Humphreys as a child and Tom Hanks as an adult) gets to interact with many famous personalities of the day. Of particular note are Gump's scenes at the University of Alabama, where Forrest meets then-governor George Wallace (via newsreel footage) and football coach Bear Bryant (actor Sonny Shroyer). Similarly outstanding are the sequences set in Vietnam and the later shrimpboat scenes with Gump's best friend (Gary Sinise), a legless war veteran. Forrest Gump won six Oscars, including Best Picture, over critical favorites Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption. An interesting sidelight to Hanks' Best Actor win is Jessica Lange's also set-in-Alabama Best Actress performance in Blue Sky in the same year. The wins, however, did not lead Hollywood to rush to set more films in the "Heart of Dixie" state. ~ Richard Gilliam, All Movie Guide
