One of the most popular Disney animated musicals, The Lion King presents the story of a lion cub's journey to adulthood and acceptance of his royal destiny. Simba (voiced first by Jonathan Taylor Thomas, then by Matthew Broderick) begins life as an honored prince, son of the powerful King Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones). The cub's happy childhood turns tragic when his evil uncle Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons) murders Mufasa and drives Simba away from the kingdom. In exile, the young lion befriends the comically bumbling pair of Pumbaa the warthog (voiced by Ernie Sabella) and Timon the meerkat (voiced by Nathan Lane) and lives a carefree jungle life. As he approaches adulthood, however, he is visited by the spirit of his father, who instructs him to defeat the nefarious Scar and reclaim his rightful throne. Borrowing elements from Hamlet, classical mythology, and African folk tales, The Lion King tells its mythic coming-of-age tale with a combination of spectacular visuals and lively music, featuring light, rhythmic songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, and a score by Hans Zimmer. Embraced by children and adults alike, the film also spawned hit songs ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight", "Circle of Life") and a hit Broadway musical. In late 2002, The Lion King was re-released in the large-screen IMAX format. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

SpoutBlogSpoutBlog 10 Great Movies About Brothers

"If there’s one thing I relate to on the big screen, it’s the depiction of fraternal relationships. I’m the middle of three brothers (excluding the half-brother I only knew as a toddler and the former stepbrother I only knew briefly as an adult), and at different points in my life I’ve either hated them or considered them my best friends. So, yeah, I can’t wait to see Step Brothers, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as new siblings who go from being enemies to BFFs when forced to live together. Choosing a handful of favorite movies about brotherhood is really tough. After all, tales of brothers go all the way back to almost the beginning, with the story of Cain and Abel. And a number of favorites can’t exactly be discussed, because the revelation of brothers, especially twin brothers, is often the surprise twist in films. So, before you start naming a thousand other films about brothers that I’ve forgotten (such as The Brothers McMullen and Legends of the Fall), keep in mind ... " [More]

"So, it’s only the Thursday schedule they’re leaking over at the San Diego headquarters for Comic-Con, but it looks packed. Start the day with a coffee and Click & Clack, The Tappit Brothers (only PBS would cash in on primetime Family Guy territory with an animated NPR talk show), then head over for a sneak peak at Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, more campy source material to convert into a money maker. "OK, so here are mine: 1. Beauty and the Beast - OMG, especially the first five minutes with the creepy prologue... It really was scary! 2. Amadeus - The part when Salieri poses as Mozart's father... Guess I was too young to understand the concept, so I was ultra scared! 3. Titanic - Especially the opening underwater shots, with the broken doll on the ocean floor. 4. The Lion King - Of course, the part when Scar kills Mufasa. 5. Cabaret - When the two lesbians roll in the mud, and outside the Nazis beat the owner of the cabaret. Also, the scene when Liza Minelli thinks about the future child, sitting alone on the stairs. " [More]

""The Lion King". That movie is down right beautiful! I have to say. On the whole I am not a big Disney fan but this movie is such a work of art. It has everything that DIsney often prides it's self in; the best animation, the best art, and great songs and story that (as they love to remind us whenever they can) the whole family can enjoy. Personally that last one drives me through the roof. "Bambi" didn't have any musical aspect to it. Maybe there was that song with the rain but there is not what I am talking about. But although "The Lion King" has all that stuff that I have said that I loath with a burning passion I say this to credit it. It finds a balance. It is one movie that an entire family could watch anywhere anytime forever and enjoy it. How often has Disney done that? Since "The Lion King", never. But this isn't really even what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about is this; Disney, on several occasions has taken ... " [More]

"Hi!I am Elli. New in Spout. I found Spout watching the Four Eye Monster -movie in Youtube. This is a place for me. Movie fanatic like the rest.Genres are great. I guess I mostly enjoy good comedies with a sparkle of darkness/drama. Like Little Miss Sunshine, Garden State or Lost in Translation. But I get trully excited with good action scifi stuff like the marvelous Sunshine or the first The Matrix. I love to spend time with good animation like the old Disneys The Little Mermaid or The Lion King or Japanese creations like Miyazaki`s Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi. When I want something really romantic I watch Before Sunset. I regard Clueless as a classic. Fabuleux destin dÁmelie Poulain makes me smile, some Bollywood movies and Moulin Rouge (in the end) makes me cry and Quentin´s Kill Bills makes me want to go jogging. Horror I cannot watch because with my over active imagination I get nightmares. Usually I prefer to see a movie I haven´t yet seen over a good mov ... " [More]

"Swingers's detail pageI thought I wouldn't like participating in this group at first because it get's frustrating complaining about movies, but I can't seem to hold myself back. Puhnner, you asked me to list some of my overrated movies, referring to my definition of overrated by ratio. Well I'm not sure if this is going by the same criteria, but I've come up with a list from another source. I also rate movies at the website movielens. It will give you recommendations based on your ratings and whatnot. It also gives some interesting statistics. For one, it tells me which movies I have rated the lowest compared to the average rating on their site. So I have looked at that list and picked several of them. The thing about this method is that I am not using what my impression of the ammount of acclaim a movie has received for the ratio but rather what the ammount of acclaim a website thinks a movie has based on the votes from it's users. Arriving in theaters with a roar, The Lion King quickly became the ruler of Disney's vast jungle, far outgrossing any of the studio's previous releases (a whopping $312 million domestically) and assuring itself a timeless legacy through its incarnation as one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time. A fairly simple tale is told with sweeping visual brush strokes of verdant Africa, and an Oscar-winning score (by Hans Zimmer) and songs (by Elton John and Tim Rice) to match. It's noteworthy that The Lion King represents Disney's anomalous return to entirely non-human characters; whether this was key to its success or not is uncertain, but the studio did not try to duplicate this formula until it was basically forced to with Dinosaur in 2000. Because it hews fairly closely to Disney's usual patterns in all other respects, it's hard to pinpoint exactly why this film struck viewers so much more profoundly than others. The Lion King exists as a testament to clean, straightforward storytelling featuring proud heroes and hissable villains, as well as numerous lessons to be gleaned by its younger viewers. Even so, the film was not without controversy -- some critics and watchdog groups decried the fact that Scar's seedy hyenas, voiced by Whoopi Goldberg and Cheech Marin, were played too ethnically to come across as anything but vicious stereotypes of blacks and Latinos. Ultimately, however, concerns like this were lost in the multitude of accolades heaped on what was, at the time, Disney's most successful animated feature ever. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
