Directed by Alex Proyas.
Based on the graphic novel by James O'Barr, this fantasy follows Eric Draven (Brandon Lee), a rock musician who is murdered along with his fiancée Shelly (Sofia Shinas) by a group of marauding thugs who terrorize the decaying city in which they live. One year to the day after his death (which happens to be Devil's Night), a mystical crow appears at Eric's grave; Eric rises from the dead and, with the bird as his guide, goes on a mission to avenge himself against Top Dollar (Michael Wincott), the leader of the gang who killed him. Star Brandon Lee was killed while filming a scene in which he was shot with a shell from an improperly cleaned gun that was supposed to be loaded with blanks. Like his father, martial arts superstar Bruce Lee, Brandon was fated to enjoy his greatest popular success after his premature death. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"There is so much going on these days in the marketing of The Dark Knight (see Chris Thilk’s most recent update/summary here), but Warner Bros. may be wasting a lot of time and money on its campaigns. If we’re to believe an AP story from yesterday, there’s already enough interest in the Batman Begins sequel coming from two separate directions: comic book fandom (”the magnitude of a comic-book franchise with an illustrious 70-year history”) and, of course, the cult of celebrity death (”arguably the biggest movie featuring a posthumous role in Hollywood history.”). The article highlights a number of posthumous film releases, including those of James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause and Giant), Spencer Tracy (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner), Will Rogers (Steamboat Round the Bend), Bruce Lee (Enter the Dragon), his son, Brandon Lee (The Crow), John Candy (Canadian Bacon and Wagon’s East!), Natalie Wood (Brainstorm), Carole Lombard (To Be or Not to Be), Oliver Reed (Gladiator), Clark Gable (The ... "Here is a beautiful eulogy to a man who will always remain on the "what if" list. Brandon Lee shines in his breakout role, adding much needed depth and warmth to a story that dances the line between romantic and cheesy. The film is dark and depressing, and the music really helps the ambiance. I was a huge Brandon Lee fan, after first seeing him in "Showdown In Little Tokyo" a few years before, and I knew when I heard he was going to be in this film that he would become a huge star. Needless to say, I was devastated when I learned that he had died while making this film. And then a few years later, the beauty of this film was pissed on when the producers decided to make an absolutely pointless and terrible sequel. I can kind of see why James O'Barr has distanced himself from the series - it's a mockery of the comic it was based on. But this film will live on, despite it's horrendous sequels. " [More]

"Thank You, Robert! For sharing your encyclopedic knowledge with us! It is ALWAYS appreciated! Those are ALL certainly very good examples of 'FX' animal butchery that would make any 'animal lover' whince! However, we were talking about ACTUAL animal butchery.... and now about actual HUMAN butchery! ... Yes, as promised, I am here with more for all my little 'ghoulies' ... There have been 'rumors' of actual human death caught on film since the silent era... I assume you all know about Brandon Lee in "The Crow" and Vic Morrow in "Twilight Zone: The Movie" ... although these deaths WERE filmed (!) , that footage was NOT included in the final product! I know of ONE case where a stuntman WAS killed by a 'supposedly sedated' shark (!), and that footage WAS included in the final movie! Not once but TWICE (!) trying to pass it off as two different 'shark attacks'! ... And that movie is "SHARK!" , (1969: starring Bu ... " [More]

"I totally loved this movie. What a great character for Brandon Lee's last film. Very dark story of musician Eric Draven (Lee) who is murdered along with his girlfriend on the night he propses to her. He comes back a year later to seek revenge on the gang that killed him. Great soundtrack and some very memorable lines like " here funboy funboy" a classic. If you are in the mood for a dark gothic style movie with some great action scenes and some blood and gore then this is a must watch. " [More]

This dark romantic fantasy of revenge from beyond the grave has a blackly funereal beauty which makes up for some of its sillier elements. The Gothic-style production design and an achingly poetic performance from the late Brandon Lee should make it a favorite among certain types of young people, while action fans should appreciate the moments of bone-crunching violence and a great villainous turn by Michael Wincott. An unexpected treat from promising director Alex Proyas, The Crow was followed by a wretched sequel. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide
