Directed by William Dieterle.
This classic fantasy was based on a story by Stephen Vincent Benet. Jabez Stone (James Craig) is a simple New England farmer who has been suffering from a long run of bad luck. One day he mutters that he'd sell his soul for a little money and a decent crop. Moments later, who should appear but The Evil One himself, Mr. Scratch (Walter Huston). Scratch offers Stone seven years of wealth and good fortune in exchange for his soul; Stone, assuming it's some sort of joke, agrees. Soon Stone's fields are plentiful and money is rolling in, but his financial success comes with a price; he becomes a cold and greedy tyrant, losing the affection of his family and the respect of his peers. In time, Stone realizes that he's made a terrible mistake and that Scratch won't let him out of their deal without a fight. Desperate to regain his soul, Stone turns to the greatest legal and oratorical mind of his day, Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold), who challenges Scratch to put his contract with Stone to the test in a fair trial. While a critical success and a favorite of film buffs, The Devil and Daniel Webster fared poorly at the box office; it was eventually released under five different titles and clipped to 85 minutes in hopes of winning a larger audience, though it was restored to a 107-minute length for release on home video. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Yes, I have been watching many of these lately, and I have been enjoying some of them. So far those three directed by James Whale are definitely my favorite.I have not yet watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame, although I have been meaning to. I have been thinking I'll like it a lot actually. One because it's rated so well on sites where people can rate movies, but also because it's directed by William Dieterle. And although I've only seen one other movie by him so far, The Devil and Daniel Webster, it's one of my very favorite movies.I notice that there is also a version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame that was released in 1923 staring Lon Chaney. Have you seen this one? How does it stack up?Well the featurette on the The Invisible Man DVD mentiones The Invisible Woman, Invisible Agent, and The Invisible Man's Revenge as all being sequels. And they were all made by Universal. Have you seen any of them? They say the effects in the last one were some of ... " [More]

"The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941)I read the original famous short story by Stephen Vincent Benet and loved it so much that I just had to see the movie. I was surprised to love the movie just as much, and it has become one of my absolute favorites. I have watched it a couple times now.The original story has sort of a mythic, overblown type of language sometimes that I think is both authentically patriotic, ridiculous, and rather facetious. I think it's very American, or what I like about what's American. Kind of like how the Coen brothers are very American but in a more full way than is normally identified.I would recommend anyone reading this story and if you love it, then see the movie for sure. The Criterion edition actually has an audio recording of it being read by Alec Baldwin (who ended up directing a recent modern adaptation of the story but apparently disowned it after the studios got their hands on it).The real gold here is Walter Huston. This is one of the ... " [More]

"Would you suggest reading the book before or after seeing this movie?I've also been exicted to see it because of my love for William Dieterle after seeing The Devil and Daniel Webster. It's the only movie of his I've seen, but it's absolutely tops. " [More]

"I know what my #1 pic is, no doubt about it 1. The Devil and Daniel Webster. (1941) No doubt about it. I read this short story (at the book store whe you work while you were working actually, Adam) and I loved it. I saw the movie and I loved it. It's one of my absolute favorite movies of all time actually. Walter Huston is so compelling as The Devil, Mr. Scratch. The final shot of him noticing the viewer at home and coming towards the camera gives me wonderful goosebumps! I don't know if I can make a decent top 5 list out of this either. Jason, I liked the suggestion of Barton Fink. I'm not sure if Charlie Meadows is Satan himself, but he definitely represents some kind of Hell on earth. I would also like to mention Dirty Work, which is a fairly funny movie where Adam Sandler has a quick cameo as The Devil. And also Fatty Drives the Bus, since I'm currently taking classes with Mick Napier and it is pretty entertaining in a very unusual way. Read the synopsis to this film. T ... " [More]
