Directed by James Cameron.
Big-budget special effects, swiftly paced action, and a distinct feminist subtext from writer/director James Cameron turned what should have been a by-the-numbers sci-fi sequel into both a blockbuster and a seven-time Oscar nominee. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ellen Ripley, the last surviving crew member of a corporate spaceship destroyed after an attack by a vicious, virtually unbeatable alien life form. Adrift in space for half a century, Ripley grapples with depression until she's informed by her company's representative, Carter Burke (Paul Reiser) that the planet where her crew discovered the alien has since been settled by colonists. Contact with the colony has suddenly been lost, and a detachment of colonial marines is being sent to investigate. Invited along as an advisor, Ripley predicts disaster, and sure enough, the aliens have infested the colony, leaving a sole survivor, the young girl Newt (Carrie Henn). With the soldiers picked off one by one, a final all-female showdown brews between the alien queen and Ripley, who's become a surrogate mother to Newt. Several future stars made early career appearances in Aliens (1986), including Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Reiser. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"Discussion of this summer’s heroine lack is in full throttle. Last friday, New York’s Vulture blog asked, “Where are the Roles for Superwomen?; Stu at Defamer jumped off from there, ultimately suggesting an X-Men spin-off for Ellen Page; John at The Movie Blog listed reasons “Why Most Female Lead Action Films Don’t Succeed” (shocker: men can’t identify with or believe in strong — and strong — female characters). Now, adding to the conversation in the least noble way possible, USA Weekend presents the appropriately titled “Girls Want to Have Fun, Too”, a cover story (with the least flattering photos I’ve ever seen) from its summer movie preview that spotlights Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Liv Tyler as the “leading ladies” of the season’s three big comic book adaptations. Of course, each of these three actresses are only secondary figures to their superhero counterparts (in Iron Man, The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk, respectively). But that’s not the worst of it: the ... " [More]

"Dito Montiel has cast his A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints star Channing Tatum in his new film, a still untitled drama about underground street fighting. Tatum has a fervent teen girl fan base, who will surely delight at the prospect of seeing their guy shirtless and bloodied. I say the following in all sincerity: if they can land a PG-13 rating, this sounds like box office gold. Theater actor Stephen Lang, who unsuccessfully read for a role in Aliens over 20 years ago, has been cast in James Cameron’s upcoming motion-capture epic, Avatar. The Hollywood Reporter thinks The Bourne Ultimatum should easily clear $60 mil this weekend. Variety agrees that the third installment of the Matt Damon-starring franchise should come in at the top of the pack, but they’re not quite as gung-ho about it. Pamela McClintock points out that in this hyper-crowded blockbuster year, holdover business has been unexpectedly strong. So while a film like The Simpsons could easily continue to do “boffo” bu ... "As the Amazon woman cutting off one breast to better aim her bow and arrow, so tough are the women on this girl power rock block. Their similarities beg a double feature: each of these fine ladies are the only one capable in their respective flick of stopping evil corporations from procuring or manufacturing weapons destined to wipe out the human race in the name of “security” despite their heavily armed marine type escorts, each has an equally bad ass Hispanic Lady side-kick of sorts who bites it in a rough-ass way near the end, and they both also have some pretty sweet weaponry and skills at disposal. Aliens & Resident Evil The Bitch Is Back - Aliens In Aliens, Ripley is back from deep sleep in deep space, fresh memories of the Alien alive and well, and ready to battle with creature, marine and Paul Reiser alike, while savin’ babies from the clutches of evil Alien monsters. Ripley gets talked into returning to the scary-ass planet where she first encountered the Alien, o ... " [More]

"Several times I've seen references to Aliens 1, 2, and 3. How come folks don't mention 4? Is it any good?I'm glad that Fox made both Alien and Predator, because humans are just too puny to deal with the aliens. It takes a predator to do that, which is why I like Alien vs Predator. I hope they do a sequel. [/quote]I find that I really don't like either Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection. Alien 3 is an entry in the series that had real potential but was just kind of boring. And Alien Resurrection is just wrong on so many levels, from the plot, to the "reincarnated" Ripley clone, to the presence of Winona Ryder. I don't recommend it.Contact is also very good as is the original Jurassic Park. I just don't know if one can count Spaceballs or Hitchhiker's as true scifi. I love both movies, but there is no concentration on science in either film. Spaceballs is a Star Wars send up, and its most scientific element is the vaccuum cleaner/maid thing that sucks the ... "Oh hooray! I love scifi. 1. The Empire Strikes Back - Well, I had decided that this was my favorite movie of all time, not just my favorite Star Wars. So, it should be my favorite scifi. But you can go ahead and add the other two. Yes, even the teddy bears. But not the prequels. noooo.2. The Matrix - Only the first one. 3. Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Yes, I watch Star Trek. No, I'm not really a trekker, but I have seen all of the series except Enterprise and all of the movies. These are the two best movies of the entire series, plus I'm playing neutral between original cast and next generation.4. 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010 - Kubrick was visionary, let's be certain, but I also really liked the follow up. 2010 is under lauded. No, it's not a masterpiece. It's not what Kubrick would have directed. But it's still a very good movie and spooky too.5. Alien and Aliens: But unlike someone else's thoughts, I do ... " [More]

"What’s the date? May 18th. The summer blockbuster season must be upon us. As an avid moviegoer from the age of 5, I have almost a biohoroscopic feel in my well worn behind that tells me I should be sitting in a movie theater seat, shoving popcorn and cherry coke into my face. Each year, that rush of anticipation and ultimate disappointment rushes through me like the sun rays telling my body to start perspiring like a pig. But, having just been the least useful partner in the birth of a child, I know that those trips to the multiplex will be fleeting this season. Already weeks into this, and I’ve yet to see Spiderman 3 and Shrek 3 – although I hear I’m not missing much.In my contemplative state I turn to the one summer, where that pang of excitment that comes every May first started. I’m talking about the summer of 1986. If summer means anything, it means action, and 1986 delivered more action frame by frame than any other summer before or since. Taken ... " [More]

"I have not yet seen "The Descent" , but I am intending to! Yes, June! I think that ALL of the movies you listed count as 'Horror/Action'! I call them 'Action/Adventure/Horror&# 39; so that I might fit a few more films under that 'umbrella'! Movies like "Jurassic Park" and "Deliverance" and "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" ( bet you did not think I could spell that, huh ROBERT? ... Twice, even! ...) I only JUST saw "Alien vs Predator" and I LOVED it! I liked this one BETTER than "Freddy vs Jason"! For a good dose of 'Action/Adventure/Horror&# 39; try Sam Raimi's FIRST movie (!) ... For big-budget, high-octane showmanship, Aliens (the sequel to Alien, directed by Ridley Scott) is hard to beat. While not as deliberate or interesting as the first in the series, Aliens is a wide-open visual-effects bonanza, with enough intensity and thrill for three standard action movies. Director James Cameron again proves himself more than capable when it comes to making the genre pay off. Sigourney Weaver reprises her role as Ripley, but this time she's no mere survivor, she's ready to lay waste to those ultra-nasty creatures from the first movie. She's like Wonder Woman without the skimpy clothes. The female heroine in this series has always been fascinating because of her complete ignorance of her sexuality. This is given an interesting spin at the end of this film when Ripley's goal becomes to destroy the alien eggs in their nest. A slap in the face to traditional motherhood? Anyway, too much shouldn't be read into the proceedings here. The dialogue is often horrendous, and the characters other than Ripley are little more than fodder for some impressive scenes of carnage, but this remains one of the most enjoyable action movies of the mid-'80s. ~ Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide
