Directed by Umberto Lenzi.
Primarily a showcase for the gory special-effects artistry of Gianetto de Rossi, this revolting horror film stars Giovanni Lombardo Radice (also known as "John Morghen") as a drug-dealer who comes to the Amazon jungle from New York looking for a cache of stolen emeralds. He joins some American college students and soon introduces them to his special lifestyle, raping a native girl, then beating a young Indio senseless before gouging out his eyeball with a knife. Naturally, the local cannibals don't take too well to this treatment, so they cut off Radice's penis with a machete, gouge out his eye, then scalp him and eat his brain. Deciding that his companions are also to blame, the natives hang a young woman by impaling her breasts on meat hooks while her sorrowful companion sings "Red River Valley." Eventually, one woman gets back to New York, where she reads a dissertation on cannibalism to earn her PhD. Cult filmmaker Umberto Lenzi really outdid himself with this bloody spectacle, which maintains a consistent air of cruelty with a non-stop procession of beatings, rapes, real-life animal slaughter, larva-chewing, genital-chopping, cannibalism and the infamous meathook scene. Definitely for acquired tastes only, this nauseatingly effective shocker features a brief appearance by adult-film star Richard Bolla as a New York policeman. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

"OK... on with my 'rant'... We have already talked about the older 'Italian Amazon Cannibal Movies' and how they used ACTUALL KILLING of SEVERAL animals, just for effect! Just to make it more 'realistic'! These are VERY brutal 'on screen' actuall killings of several different types of animals! "Cannibal Holocaust" and "Cannibal Ferox" are probably the two most extreme examples of this... and yet, they are two of my FAVORITE movies! Does that make ME evil? Perhaps... I just know a good movie when I see one...! Now, here is a disturbing one... "The Hunchback Of The Morgue" is probably my FAVORITE Paul Naschy film from Spain in the early 70's. Yet there is ONE scene... where the 'hunchback' stashes his dead 'girlfriend' in an underground crypt/cave and then he goes to work and comes back later to find her covered with rats which are EATING her! He then grabs a torch off the wall and knocks all of the rats ... " [More]

""Cannibal Holcaust" was, I believe, at least partially the inspiration for "The Blair Witch Project" in that it tells the story of a 'documentary fim crew' that disappeared in the Amazon jungle. When a would be rescuer discovers the groups film cannisters and takes them back to 'civilization' we discover the gruesome fate of these people! Full of over the top gore and brutallity (including a very disturbing rape scene), this movie is NOT for everyone! "Cannibal Ferox", while perhaps not quite as good story wise, is actually a better movie in that it is filmed in a straight-out 'movie' style rather than the 'documentary' style used in "Holocaust". Thus the gore effects, of which there are MANY, are much more graphic. These two movies are the two most 'hardcore' and graphically violent of the Italian 'cannibal' genre and, as I mentioned, are probably NOT for everyone! Especially if you are a member of P.E.T.A. or any other & ... " [More]

"Thank you, Froggy! But, I have to ask you, it sounds like you have seen this movie only once? If that is the case then you need to watch it again! This is one of those movies that actually gets BETTER every time you watch it! Much like... JAWS The Exorcist The Wild Bunch The Magnificent 7 The Beyond Dracula Frankenstein Rocky III Mars Attacks ... I will quit here before I wander TOO far off track! Ooh! wait! ... a couple more! ... Cannibal Holocaust Make Them Die Slowly " [More]
