Directed by Richard Linklater.
Like George Lucas' American Graffiti, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused is an affectionate look at the youth culture of a bygone era. While Lucas took aim at the conservative 1950's, Linklater jumps ahead a generation to the bicentennial year of 1976 to celebrate the joys of beer blasts, pot smoking and Frampton Comes Alive. Set on the last day of the academic year, the film follows the random activities of a sprawling group of Texas high schoolers as they celebrate the arrival of summer, their paths variously intersecting at a freshmen hazing, a local pool parlor and finally at a keg party. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Movie Guide

"I have to admit that I think Richard Linklater’s work runs hot and cold for me. I loved his early works like Dazed and Confused (1993) and Before Sunrise (1995). I love some of his more experimental work like A Scanner Darkly (2006). But some of his movies just fall completely flat. Sadly, Fast Food Nation is in this last category. I think part of it is that the subject is just too big for a dramatic movie like this. He just didn’t find a way to get a plot in his polemic against the fast food industry. Also some poor casting choices like Greg Kinnear hamper the movie. It almost seems that Linklater agrees, since his character disappears in the second half of the movie. I wanted to like it. The subject of the movie is right up my alley. Unfortunately, the plodding pace and painful exposition just made me keep checking my watch. . " [More]

"Top 5 Antagonists: Human1.) Dazed and Confused - O'Bannon - Ben Affleck's character takes the cake as the biggest a**hole and eventually gets what he deserves.2.) Mutiny on the Bounty - Captain Bligh - Sadistic and unflinchingly evil, Captain Bligh is undoubtedly one of cinemas most hated antagonists.3.) What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? - Jane - Bette Davis oozes nastiness from her caked on makeup to her hoarse, smokers voice.4.) Se7en - John Doe - The unseen serial killer in this film intensifies the terror and dread the viewer feels throughout this film, even more so when he reveals himself and his final acts of brutality.5.) Groundhog Day - Phil "like the groundhog!" Connors - Bill Murray is incredibly noxious for most of the film as a jaded weather man forced to relive the same day over and over again.Runner's Up: Strangeland, Misery, All About Eve, Man Bites Dog, Lemony Snicket's, Dogville Top 5 Antagonists: Supernatural / Science Fiction1.) "If you're a Dazed and Confused (1993) fan, I suspect you'll like my newest post to lo-fi cinema. And even if you're not, it's an interesting, if minor, experiment with the pliability of digital media; I made the video from digital still photos taken of a TV broadcast of the movie on Encore. "When we first saw clips of Parker Posey’s stab at sitcom stardom, the long-delayed FOX offering The Return of Jezebel James, we were skeptical that the sometime high school hazer and incestuous Jackie O impersonator would be able to make the transition to laugh track anchor without diluting her own charms, or worse, becoming really, really annoying. Based on the first two episodes, which are already available for watching and embedding via Hulu (see the pilot above), both of our fears were valid––Posey’s total inability to grasp sitcom comic timing is a big problem, and her flailing attempts to do so strip her of all likeability. It’s such a sad thing to see such a strong actress in a debacle like this, especially just one year after making a really good film which, in a fair and just world, would have sat at the top of her resume until she could get cast in something even better. But there are sadder things about Jezebel James to discuss… (more…) Originally posted on:SpoutBlog » ... " [More]

"I was sitting in my jeep a few days ago looking through my iPod for something that would pick my spirits up for the drive home. Great little invention. Kinda makes that "10 albums on a desert island" thing useless. Just bring your iPod and you can have your entire collection. Anyway, I decided on the Counting Crows as it'd been years since I'd listened to them. Instantly I was transported to...I'll get to that in a minute. It made me think about that whole "smell is the best memory trigger" thing. Now maybe it's just a deficiency in my olfactory system, but smell has never done a thing for my memory. Sure, it's been instrumental in conjuring up old girlfriends and musty schools, but nothing really useful. Music on the other hand can open wormwholes to my past. When I hear the songs from the soundtrack of the movie that is my life I am instantly bombarded with memories. Sights, sounds, smells, the whole package. -"I Wear My Sunglasse ... " [More]

"There is a stable of actors that have maintained a great deal of credibility in my mind basically because I associate them with a period in my life where I was discovering a wide variety of films. Julie Delpy and Adam Goldberg will always bring me back to the mid 90s when I was spent my college years overdosing on all the movies I could. Goldberg was the neurotic guy in the backseat during 'Dazed and Confused.' Delpy was the adorable love interest of 'Before Sunrise.'Neither has broken out as a major star, but both have had consistent, intriguing careers. Goldberg wrote and directed a feature a few years back, 'I Love Your Work,' for which he provided some incidental music. Now it's Delpy's turn writing, directing and providing the music for her own film (she edits, too!), Goldberg is on board as Delpy's on-screen American boyfriend.'2 Days in Paris' opens as Marion (Delpy) and Jack (Goldberg) are arriving in Paris, and we can tell there ... "In its function as documentary on legendary rocker Roger "Roky" Erickson, 'You're Gonna Miss Me' features testimonials from rock notables like Patti Smith and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, as well as ubiquitous MTV talking head Kurt Loder. Interestingly enough, before we see any of them, and even before we see Roky himself, the first faces shown in this documentary are Roky's brother Sumner and his mother Evelyn. The typical modus operandi for documentaries on rock 'n' roll legends is to go heavy on exceedingly positive interviews about the history and significance of the subject. In the case of Roky Erickson, we do get a sense that his work with the 13th Floor Elevators in the mid '60s was seminal and worthy of recognition. Roky's songs heard throughout the film are uniformly strong and attention-grabbing. Even in a disheveled, hesitant state, Roky still slips into a performance effortlessly and beautifully. Surprisingly, though, the majority of ... " [More]

"1. Velvet Goldmine - Classic case of a fantastic soundtrack making a good movie great... Vintage Brian Eno, Roxy Music and Lou Reed mixed with fantastic covers by Shudder to Think, Placebo and a dead-on Stooges cover by Ewan McGreggor. 2. Amateur - Hal Hartley is known for creating a lot of the music for his own movies, but this gem from the mid-1990s is who's who of that decade's indie rock: My Bloody Valentine, PJ Harvey, Pavement, Liz Phair, Bettie Severt, Jesus Lizard, Red House Painters and Yo La Tango. 3. Dream with the Fishes - Little seen indie flick from the 90s with mostly little known singer-songwriter types: Nick Drake (pre-VW ad exposure), Jeremy Toback, Greg Brown, Grandaddy, Ween and a classical Waterboys tune. Very solid, satisfying album. 4. Dazed and Confused - Has there ever been a better collection of 70's super-rock? 5. Purple Rain - Much, much more than a soundtrack, one of the greatest albums ever made. " [More]

Dazed and Confused is an American Graffiti for the 1990s, set in the 1970s. Though not quite up to the high standard of its spiritual predecessor, it does an excellent job of following an ensemble cast, who, through the course of one day, enjoy the myriad emotions and experiences that compose the teenage years. Writer/director Richard Linklater does not force the film to follow one storyline in particular, and this choice helps him avoid the conventions of the teen genre, in which the kids learn a big lesson after a series of wacky misdeeds. Indeed, the film is notable for its refreshing lack of sentiment. This isn't a movie interested in leading us through standard character arcs, and it gives us a portrait of youth that is surprisingly realistic, wiping away much of the gloss with which we often remember "the best years of our lives," but never going too far in the other direction by indulging in too much grittiness. Dazed and Confused is also remarkable for its sheer number of young actors who went on to big careers, including Milla Jovovich, Jason London, Joey Lauren Adams, Adam Goldberg, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, and Matthew McConaughey, as the memorable Wooderson ("That's what I like about these high school girls: I keep getting older; they stay the same age"). Dazed and Confused offers neither a warmly reminiscent nor an intentionally bleak picture of high school. It is a uniquely astute portrait of those teenage years, which at times seem full of magic and energy and at other times feel as anticlimactic and banal as adulthood. ~ Matthew Doberman, All Movie Guide
