Directed by George A. Romero.
Day of the Dead, the third and concluding chapter in George Romero's zombie trilogy is the most distinctly 1950s-style science fiction version of the lot. Set in Florida, as the film begins the dead have taken over the world, outnumbering humans 400,000 to one. The handful of surviving humans have taken refuge in an underground missile silo and argue and yell at each other like players in a Rod Serling Twilight Zone episode. Among the survivors are Sarah (Lori Cardille) -- a scientist who is trying to reverse the process whereby the dead turn into flesh-eating, irrational zombies -- and Dr. Logan (Richard Liberty) -- an out-of-his-mind psychologist who wants to capture the zombies and turn them into domestic help. Things heat up when the military tries to take over the scientific experiments. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

"This came on BBC 2 the other night, and i thought, lets give it a go..I pretty much loved it..and i'm not a "gore" fan or anything..I found it very upbeat and life-affirming. I liked the way, there was no exposition, i didnt need it,even though i have not seen the previous films. The flashbacks that the main character has, just "grabbed" me straight away.I cant remember seeing Lori Cardille in anything else, nor any of the others come to think of it,but this was pretty much perfectly cast...I loved the pure kitchness of the acting..the twitchy scientist, the ludicrous jamaacaan accent of the pilot, the oirish(?) drinker, the demure woman scientist in her best "peg leg" trousers, and ,stand back ,the biggest "monster",the Army commander with his Gene Vincent quiff ...The skies are blue, there are lots of good jokes laced through this highly moral tale, and ,best of all,the music is just great.Like a toned down "Beverly Hills Cop",or Cyndi Lauper's band warming up, the score is relentlessly ... ""Rhodes" from Romero's Day Of The Dead ... it is pretty uncanny... But I have had some people tell me I remind them of Dracula and even The Devil!!! I kid you not! You can take from that what you will... " [More]

"Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! My bad! I had my calender on the wrong page! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... "The opening scene is the shit, I love that feeling of an abandoned, havoc wrecked upon town full of zombies and shit waiting to bestolen. I wish he'd've had the money to shoot it the way he originally wanted, in the full script theres shoot out scenes between some guys on some docks, and zombies and shit, I dunno I wish he could've fit it all in " [More]

"I have to agree with what both of you have said about each of the "Dead" movies. NOTLD is still one of the best movies that I can watch over and over and still see things I missed. I absolutely LOVE the beginning of the film, just a beautiful sunny day, brother having fun trying to scare the sister, when out of nowhere (when they think it is just a crazy drunk man) the brother gets it...what can be more scary? It doesn't happen at night in the dark shadows at first, it happens when you think everything should be safe AND when you are with someone else...just classic. I loved Dawn of the Dead, and I also loved the remake, although even though the two had similar situations, they were really different. The original is still my fav so far. I'm excited to see Diary of the Dead, I hope it will be another modern classic and not just an excuse to express what's wrong with the world...but we will see...Martin, is also one of my favorite vampire movies, very bizarre and a ... "Good job, WorkingDead! I just want to clarify one thing. I do NOT think "ZOMBIE" is a better film than "Night Of The Living Dead" . I said that I thought it was a better PREQUEL to "Dawn" and "Day Of The Dead" than was the original "NOTLD"... I keep hearing that someone is remaking "Day Of THe Dead", by the way.... Also, have you ever seen any of the 'colorized' versions of the original NOTLD? there are a few different ones and I think I have them all... (I have, I think, 6 copies of this movie!) ... anyhow, the colorized ones are pretty cool in that the blood is bright red (!) instead of black, and it is EVERYFUCKINGWHERE! It just makes the movie all the more gory and brutal to SEE all that blood all over the place! Also, I mentioned this before but I heard Mr. Romero state in an interview that he would have loved to have filmed this in color... the only reason they didn't was purely budgetary... they couldn't afford the color film! "Ok, I know I'm always showing up late to the party, replying to these things months after they were posted, but screw it... I'm still semi-new to the group. Also I checked, and it doesn't look like anyone replied directly to this yet. In order: The zombie vs. shark scene is mind boggling. Sure the shark was drugged, and they had trained proffesionals, and it was a fake arm and all that, but the fact remains: The man was taunting a shark until it tried to bite off his arm! Italians are crazy!Zombie(the Fulci one, so Zombie 2) was actually written and begun as a standalone zombie movie, before Dawn of the Dead came out over there. This explains why the zombies in the movie bear little to no relation to Romero's zombies. The opening and ending scenes in New York were added to the script to shoehorn it into the mythology after Dawn became such a huge hit. And are you saying that Zombie is better than the original Night of the Living Dead? Sure, Zombie may have the gonzo ... " [More]

is neutral about it.
The last, to date at least, of George Romero's living dead films is in many respects the least interesting, although it's not for a lack of ambition. Set in a claustrophobic underground missile silo long after the zombies have taken over the surface, it populates its creepy milieu with two competing factions: soldiers and scientists. One party seeks a logical solution to the zombie problem, even going so far as to attempt to domesticate a soulful-looking walking corpse. The other seeks only survival. The most blatantly allegorical of the Dead films, it's also the muddiest and least resonant, with its attempt to connect its story to Reagan-era America coming off as too self-conscious when compared to its predecessors. Too talky by far, it comes alive in a gory finale, and while still memorable than most horror films, Romero fans have come to expect more from the director and his signature series. ~ Keith Phipps, All Movie Guide
