"A 1910 motor in a 1930 chassis," Joan Crawford says, summing up yet another of her roommates' wolfish gentlemen callers. That's the kind of girl Joan is in Our Blushing Brides, sensible beneath the gold-digging veneer and unlike her fellow department store colleagues too clever by half to be taken in by the likes of John Miljan or Raymond Hackett. All the studios made and remade this story scores of times and if the girls weren't named Sally, Irene and Mary (1925) they were likely to be Jerry, Connie and Franky and be played by the likes of Crawford, Anita Page and Dorothy Sebastian. Not every blushing would-be bride ended up with a rich husband, of course -- some of them, in fact, turned suicidal instead -- but they all displayed various stages of undress, especially in the good old pre-code days of 1930. ~ Hans J.
