Directed by Paul Schrader.
In this loose adaptation of the 1942 horror classic of the same name, a 2001-style opening montage establishes some sort of sacrificial, mystical union between panthers and an ancient tribe of humans. Flash forward to 1980's New Orleans, where waifish Irina (Natassja Kinski) meets her older brother, Paul (Malcolm McDowell), a minister, for the first time since their animal trainer parents died and she was sent to a series of foster homes. Paul's Creole housekeeper, Female (Ruby Dee), helps Irina settle into her brother's home, but Paul himself disappears. Cut to a fleabag motel where a blasé prostitute finds an angry panther instead of a client; after mauling her, the cat is captured by police and a team of zoologists: Oliver (John Heard), Alice (Annette O'Toole), and Joe (Ed Begley Jr.). The next day Irina finds herself in the zoo where these scientists work; drawn to the newly captured panther, she befriends Oliver and takes a job in the gift shop. Shortly after the panther's violence turns deadly, it escapes, and soon Paul turns up spouting an unbelievable story about his family's were-cat heritage and his inevitable sexual union with little Irina. On the run from her dangerous brother, Irina takes refuge in a sexually frustrated romance with Oliver, afraid of what might happen if she consummates their passion. Astute viewers will notice that the zoologist characters refer to the film's panthers as leopards; "panther" is actually a generic term for any large cat, especially a black one, but Cat People's panthers are in fact leopards whose black color comes from a recessive trait known as melanism. ~ Brian J. "I recently rewatched "Cat People" after several years and I had forgotten what a good movie this is! This is the 1982 'remake' version (actually a 'reinvention') of the classic Val Lewton movie from 1942. This is actually a GREAT Horror Movie and probably much underrated! Starring Nastasja Kinski and Malcolm McDowell as brother and sister 'cat people' and directed by Paul Schrader from a script by Alan Ormsby (of "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead things" fame!), this film pretty much rocks! The story is very simple and straight-forward and the acting is very good and there are at least a couple fairly gory scenes with the best one being Ed Begley Jr. getting his arm ripped off at the shoulder and then bleeding to death... Oh yeah... There is some nudity in this movie as well! There are a few shots of Annette O'Toole's magnificent breasts as well as (of course) the beautiful Nastasja showing off every inch of her lovely body on SEVERAL occasions... Needless to sa ... "I had always thought of George C. Scott a hacky actor. He was always so BIG in everything he was in, and you were always aware that he was ACTING. But in the early 80s he found himself a niche… tormented father, a part he played with so much sensitivity here as a man of God wondering through Godless territory in search of his daughter who never returned home with her church group when they made a trip to LA. The anguish he conveys when faced with the truth about his daughters fate is powerful and heartbreaking. (Scott played a Father with a missing child of a different sort in The Changeling very effectively as well). Season Hubley (Mrs. Kurt Russell at the time) is great as well as his tour guide through the seedy underworld of sin he had only heard of before. Schrader is always a capable director with a great sense of style (American Gigolo, Cat People, Patty Hearst, The Comfort of Strangers). " [More]

"I have no idea how this film ended up on my Spout want to see list, but whoever recommended this to me better hope I don't figure out how I found out about this because Cat People has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The acting is terrible, the plot line ridiculous and the ending absolutely absurd. The movie is about a woman who meets her brother for the first time and finds out that she shares a disease that makes them turn into killer panthers everytime that they have sex with someone. After turning into a panther, the only way to get back to human is to murder someone. As if this is ridiculous enough, for some reason if they have sex with each other things are Ok. Now had the incest angle in this film been done in such a way to add something to the film, I could look the other way here, but this aspect of the plot line added nothing to the film and only made watching it all that much more unbearable. Add to this the hocus pocus of a voodoo woman who never ... " [More]
