Directed by Harold Ramis.
The smash success Caddyshack became a prototype for countless other wacky T&A-tinged teen comedies of the early 1980s. At an exclusive country club for WASPish snobs, an ambitious young caddy (Michael O'Keefe) from an overpopulated home eagerly pursues a caddy scholarship in hopes of attending college and, in turn, avoiding a job at the lumber yard. In order to succeed, he must first win the favor of the elitist Judge Smails (Ted Knight), then the caddy golf tournament which the good judge sponsors. Of course, there are love interests as well -- one good, one naughty -- not to mention several foes he must vanquish along the way. The story itself serves to string along a series of slapstick scenes involving an obnoxious nouveau riche land developer (Rodney Dangerfield) who wants to turn the site into a condominium community; an oddball, Zen-quoting, millionaire slacker/golf ace (Chevy Chase); and a psychotic groundskeeper (Bill Murray) with a gopher-fixation. Caddyshack was a bona fide hit; throughout the '80s and '90s, director Harold Ramis would continue to create such hits as Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, and Analyze This. ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide

"These may not be the greatest titles of all time, but they're the right movies for right now Allright, it's the middle of the Summer, the days are long and the nights are hot. What are you gonna watch 1. Caddyshack (1980) - Harold Ramis and Bill Murray should probably go down as one of the best contemporary comedic directors/actor teams we have today. I like Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day enough but this one set the standard. 2. Jurassic Park (1993) - This film for me, epitemizes the term Summer blockbuster. I still vividly remember standing in line, in 110+ degree heat in Phoenix for this movie. I also remember the young woman in front of us passing out from the heat as we waited. I think she was from Minnesota. 3. Born on the Fourth of July (1989)- Hey, remember when Tom Cruise wasn't such a joke? Niether do I but this is still one of his best performances and it's not something that comes up in conversation very often so now would be the perfect time to take a second look at ... " [More]

"The death of George Carlin was a big blow to the entertainment world. At the risk of sounding crass during a sensitive time, we dare to ask why? Why is comedy so important? Why do some people seem to construct their very identities around their favorite broad comedies? We think the answer has something to do with the inevitability of growing up, while resisting growing old. Discussed are such life-shaping films as Dumb & Dumber, Grosse Pointe Blank, Caddyshack, The Jerk, Office Space, and many more. filmcouch-76b (Subscrib e to FilmCouch–Spout’s weekly movie podcast–in the iTunes store or to our RSS feed and an episode will download each Friday)  Originally posted on:SpoutBlog " [More]

"In Caddyshack, stupidity is not a problem for the film- it's the movie's method on the way to greatness. The movie knows its dumb, wants to be dumb, and we approve of its being dumb, because it couldn't be as funny any other way. It's the kind of movie that gets a big laugh out of a guy getting hit in the testicles with a golf ball. And right there I have run out of material for a review, because, really, there's not much more to say, but I continue anyway. According to director Harold Ramis in the DVD documentary, the movie was originally supposed to be an early sex comedy about a teenager trying to get laid, but he found that the supporting cast was far more interesting, so the odyssey of the teen (named as Danny Noonan and played by Michael O'Keefe) became a very loose plotline to build a number of comic scenes around. And that was a good idea, because the movie's only weakness is when it slows down to watch Danny try to nail some other girl, just like we've seen in tons of othe ... " [More]

"Well as a Bill Murray fan I am obliged to like this regardless of whether it is fantastic or terrible. Fortunately it is an absolutely outstanding film that cracks me up each and every time I watch it. Everyone in the film is amazing but Bill Murray steals every scene regardless of who's sharing the screen with him. His attempt at plastic explosives and the subsequent performances his creations make prior to thier detonation leaves me laughing a good ten minutes after it has passed. This is a classic film and I think that if you don't like this film or find at least 5 moments in it to be hilarious, then you were born without a sense of humor. Sorry, but thats that. This film is pure gold. Plus, it has the King of cheesey films, Chevy Chase in it. How can you argue with that? " [More]

"Okay, I have two absolute favorite funny movies that I still love to watch over and over: Airplane and Caddyshack. Both of those movies make me laugh and giggle like I'm 14 again. They are both just CLASSIC 80s movies. What are some others out there that just cracked you up? " [More]

The frustrating difficulty of golf makes it the perfect sport to spoof in a movie...and there's no better one than Harold Ramis' 1980 comedy classic Caddyshack. Featuring a plethora of comic superstars, Caddyshack is a virtual cavalcade of gags that range from inspired to twisted to sublimely gross. The cast includes Ted Knight as Bushwood Country Club's anal-retentive owner, Rodney Dangerfield as a super-rich and super-obnoxious contractor, Chevy Chase as an excellent, but very quirky golfer, and Bill Murray as Bushwood's assistant greenskeeper and resident nut-job. In a film loaded with improvised gags and dialogue, it's the very scripted Dangerfield who steals every scene he's in with his trademark barbs laying into Knight's prim-and-proper Judge Smails with remorseless delight. The film's biggest undoing is its lack of a foundation in the script: it can't seem to figure out whether to focus on wry caddy Danny Noonan's (Michael O'Keefe) quest for a scholarship or to stay with its quartet of comedy superstars. Fortunately, while many gag scenes fail to progress the plot, they are genuine gutbusters: Knight launching his putter into a restaurant full of senior citizens, Dangerfield hitting a drive directly into Knight's groin ("I shoulda yelled two"), the "doody-in-the-pool" scene, or the splendid Fourth of July party that culminates in the Judge's nephew guzzling a drink spiked with a cigarette butt. Caddyshack is crude and may lack the finesse and ingenious story of a more notorious comedy classic such as Some Like It Hot, but it has garnered a strong cult fanbase who would certainly argue it as being one of the funniest films ever made. ~ Patrick Legare, All Movie Guide
