Directed by Terry Gilliam.
Terry Gilliam directed this adaptation of Richard LaGravenese's mystical (and mythical) tale of redemption in the hard-time town of New York City. Jeff Bridges is shock radio DJ Jack Lucas, whose low opinion of humanity lends itself well to his radio talk show, where the enmity rubs off on his listeners. One fan in particular takes Jack's rants to heart and goes to a fancy restaurant with a gun, murdering innocent diners. Jack is so distraught at what his on-air suggestion wrought that he sinks into a three-year depression, drinking himself to sleep and mooching off of his girlfriend Anne Napolitano (Mercedes Ruehl, in an Oscar-winning performance), an attractive owner of a video store. Hitting bottom, Jack slumps to the river, prepared to commit suicide. To his rescue comes a crazed but witty homeless man named Parry (Robin Williams), who tells Jack he's destined for great things -- all his has to do is find the Holy Grail (conveniently located in mid-town Manhattan) and save Parry's soul. He also wants Jack to help him out with the woman of his dreams, Lydia Sinclair (Amanda Plummer), a shy type who works at a publishing company. Parry was once a university professor became unglued by a tragic event in his past; Jack soon realizes that to save himself, he first must save Parry. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

"…of my list. I’m keeping the blurbs short on this one. 11. The Godfather Part 1 & 2 As close to perfect as films get. There is not much to be said about these films that hasn’t already been said. Completely timeless classics. 12. The Fisher King Another great Gilliam film. Robin William’s performance is amazing, as are Jeff Bridge’s and Mercedes Ruehl’s. The emotional power of this movie is phenomenal. 13. Children of Men Cuaron’s bleak vision of the future is excellently original. It is a poignant, provocative, and disturbing masterpiece. 14. The Departed I know it’s a little bit sloppy, but it’s just so fricken cool. The superb performances by the entire cast perfectly portray Monahan’s razor sharp script. 15. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Peter Jackson perfectly adapted Tolkien’s classic series and created a few of the most breathtaking movies ever put on film. 16. The Proposition Easily my ... " [More]

"1. Forrest Gump The last scene where he's talking at Jenny's grave always gets me...especially once he puts his kid on the bus. One of the only scenes I've ever actually flat out cried to.2. The Fisher King When Robin Williams finally comes face-to-face with the knight and has to face his past. It's really difficult for me to even watch this scene...it's amazing.3. No Country for Old Men Not really a tear-jerker, but Ed Tom Bell's final meditation on his dreams is amazing. His delivery is so quietly emotional...and I cried from the awesomeness of it.4. Saving Private Ryan A couple scenes to mention: the one where Vin Diesel is shot and just wants someone to deliver his letter to his father, and the final scene. Tom Hanks, you get me every time...5. Children of Men There are so many emotional scenes in this movie...I guess I'll just include all of them. Amazing movie.I heartily agree with the last scene of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, ... " [More]

"Jupiter's Wife is a very lo-fi movie. Michel Negroponte is the type of documentary filmmaker whose work is an extremely personal labor of love. He reminds me of Doug Block. The subject is a homeless woman living in central park. The pretense is that she is like Robin Williams in the Fisher King. The journey is to unravel what appears to be her psychosis. Negroponte does an excellent job of peering beneath the surface to see the woman inside her, led down the garden path by circumstances, left to fend for herself. A tough woman. I never once felt like she couldn't handle her situation. Her fantasies were how she handled it. So they are necessary until (through Negroponte's intervention) her circumstance improves. She gets to unravel the physical traumas and psychological traumas to find she is just a strong woman in unfortunate conditions. A sort of Mother Courage. The production is very primitive, but the story is captured. I admire what Negroponte has done here and am ... " [More]

"This is a list for Round 2 of my movie year countdown viewing project as first described here. If by any strange chance whoever is reading this is actually following along you may notice that I'm still less than two thirds of the way through my original one. Well I'm starting this new one because as much as I love old movies it can get a little tedious watching just older movies. So I'm going to be blending my watching of the two lists together. Still focusing on the original one, but every once in a while sliding in the next entry from this new list.Again these new movies are limited to full length movies that are available on Netflix. And for this new round instead of picking a movie from every year, I will be picking a movie from every two years. For example the first movie must have come out during 2006 or 2007. The second movie must have come out in 2004 or 2005. The next in 2002 or 2003. You see.The list is not finished yet, but here is what I have decide ... " [More]

"Perhaps Gilliam's most accessible, and best film. Gilliam holds some restraint here, and doesn't bombard the audience with bizarre for the sake of being bizarre stuff. Great story and performances. " [More]

The Fisher King offers a highly effective treatment of the time-honored themes of guilt, responsibility, and redemption. No one could say the film lacks in originality: There's enough tragedy, conflict, and Arthurian allusions in Richard LaGravenese's script for several films. Though the seams occasionally show, Terry Gilliam's inventive, sprightly direction smoothes over some of the material's more glaring rough spots. His fingerprints are all over the film, particularly in the surreal scene that transforms Grand Central Station into a dance hall. Gilliam is aided considerably by convincing turns from Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, and Mercedes Ruehl, who won an Oscar. Though it may be overly ambitious, The Fisher King proves to be a rich, satisfying mix of humor, fantasy, and emotion. ~ Matthew Doberman, All Movie Guide
