Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.
Inspired more by the 1960s TV series than by the original Charles Addams New Yorker cartoons, The Addams Family proved to be one of the more successful of the TV shows-turned-movies of the 1990s. The film opens on a recreation of the magazine cartoon wherein the ghoulish Addamses prepare to pour hot oil upon a group of merry Christmas carolers. After a series of vignettes which establish the characters of Gomez (Raul Julia), Morticia (Anjelica Huston), Wednesday (Christina Ricci), Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) and family servants Lurch (Carel Struycken) and Thing (Christopher Hart), the plot proper gets under way. A stranger, played by Christopher Lloyd, shows up on the Addams doorstep, claiming to be long-lost Uncle Fester. It appears, however, that Lloyd is a ringer, in cahoots with attorney Tully Alford (Dan Hedaya) to strip the Addamses of their fortune. In their usual against-the-grain fashion, the Addams Family seems to delight in the possibility that they're being hoodwinked-indeed, not even kidnapping or death threats dampen the Addams clan's joy of living (or should we say dying?). The Addams Family served as the directorial debut of cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"First off, you got Raul Julia, one of the finest actors in history (see Romero, Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Burning Season for proof), Anjelica Huston vamping it up, Christopher Lloyd in yet another memorable role, and a young Christina Ricci (showing all of the wry potential she would later exploit). Plus the rapid-fire jokes and phenomenal cinematography with Barry Sonnenfeld's direction wrapping it all up...and you've got a great movie amidst a sea of pale "old television show" imitators. This is probably in my top ten films of all time list. " [More]

"So, who would be Gomez Addams today? Since the untimely death in 1994 of feature film portrayer Raul Julia, who made Gomez a far more physical if not more romantic figure than when played initially on television by the great John Astin, the part of the Addams Family’s head (still attached) has been filled by Tim Curry (in a straight-to-video third film for the series, Addams Family Reunion) and by Glenn Taranto on a short-lived revival of the original show in 1998. (I am going to refrain from comment on both Curry’s and Taranto’s performances, as I have not actually seen enough of either one to fully review them.) Curry seems a natural choice to have played the role at some point, though judging from the critical reception of that particular piece, he would not be offered the role again. So, barring the possibility that Julia has actually been in hiding for almost 15 years and not deceased, who would play the part should there be interest in another film? Or has t ... " [More]

"1. Star Wars / The Empire Strikes Back / Return of the Jedi - I was hooked from the start.2. Ernest Goes to Jail / Ernest Goes to Camp / Ernest Saves Christmas - and all of the rest. I used to be obsessed with this guy. I would cut out ads of his head from ABC Warehouse ads in the newspaper and pin them up on a bulletin board.3. Who Framed Roger Rabbit - this is probably the one that was one of the best as a kid but is even better when you are older.4. Home Alone / Home Alone 2 - yeah classic.5. The Addams Family. Yeah I'll concur with you on that one. There was a classic era of Disney cartoony stuff that was pretty fantastic too. Robin Hood, Pete's Dragon, Sword in the Stone, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, Bedknobs and Broomsticks. " [More]

"Obviously this one will span many an era depending on how old you are. I'm not going to ask for a certain type of film either.Mine:1. The Adventures of Mark Twain. This is forever part of my childhood memories. Love it, love it, love it. If you haven't seen it I'll forgive you so long as you rectify that immediately - it's been on DVD since January 2006, so you can easily get ahold of it now. 2. Labyrinth. Another one permanently imbedded in my memory banks. This, along with Legend, were my first "fantasy" movies and can more-than-likely be blamed for turning me into a nerd. 3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This was my generation's Pokemon. Everyone had action figures, posters, Halloween costumes, etc. I'll refrain from including #2 but I have the same soft spot for it as well.4. The Addams Family. I loved this when I was a kid and I still have to watch it when it comes on telelvision.5. Clerks. Not exactly "childhood" fare but this was my first "grown-up" m ... " [More]

"I just posted a few lists. Let me know what you think. I also wanted to do Barry Sonnenfeld as the director with:5 stars - The Addams Family4 stars - Big Trouble3 stars - Men in Black1 star - Men in Black IISo I didn't have a 2 star movie, but movies of his I haven't seen like Wild Wild West and RV seem like very good candidates.Of course his cinematography work for the early Coen brothers movies qualifies him for several more 5 star movies. "This was, to its credit, a pleasantly bizarre movie worth of Tim Burton's offbeat, morbid tastes. It contains a scene appropriate of mention on my site http://bloodgutsandgore.com where Wednesday and Pugsley cover the stage in blood in a grim swordfight, a moment completely in keeping with the dire atmosphere that pervades this very dark flick. Uncannily cast and visually opulent, The Addams Family is a case of pure contagious delight. TV shows made into movies have failed more often than not, but Barry Sonnenfeld breathes life into a creatively stunted genre with his gleeful take on Gomez, Morticia, et al. Sonnenfeld's status as a former cinematographer is a real boon to the production, as the Addams home spirals away into a gothic maze that rivals anything in the films of Tim Burton. As lively as the sets and costumes are, it's the devilish good time displayed by the actors that makes The Addams Family such a grin. Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston are relaxed and clearly suited to their roles. The film's three credited scribes produce plenty of fodder for their pun-heavy, campy portrayals. Equally dead on is Christopher Lloyd claiming to be Uncle Fester, as bald-headed and bug-eyed as anyone could want. Eleven-year-old Christina Ricci, whose dour yet mischievous Wednesday Addams earned endless superlatives about her future in acting, has gone on to realize that potential. Tone is this film's most important attribute. Beyond the actors and snazzy art direction, there's an additional flawless special effect that nearly steals the show -- namely, Thing, the disembodied hand, which scurries about the house, interacts humorously with the characters, and displays the identifiable quirks that make it an equivalent member of this offbeat clan. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
