The worst in a string of increasingly pointless sequels to Sean S. Cunningham's crude slasher hit, this installment provided clear evidence that the "slasher" subgenre, already creatively dead, was no longer financially viable. This time around, unstoppable supernatural thug Jason Voorhees -- imprisoned at the bottom of a lake by his telekinetic foe Tina in the previous film -- is reanimated yet again after being goosed by an underwater electrical cable, freeing him to stow away aboard a shipload of standard-issue obnoxious teenagers en route to Manhattan. The title ultimately proves a bit of a cheat, since the majority of Jason's homicidal hijinks take place aboard the ship until the film's final reel, during which he pursues a handful of survivors through the streets of the Big Apple. Thanks to heavy MPAA cuts, the mayhem is more subdued here than in any other films of the series -- splatter fans primed by the previous chapters' copious bloodletting will be left high and dry. Despite a very amusing "teaser" trailer that suggested that the film might be a semi-parody, writer-director Rob Hedden and company play things tediously straight. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

"Easily the worst chapter in the series*. Be it the lack of interesting characters, the completely, utterly incomprehensible ending, or just the fact that in a movie named "Jason Takes Manhatten", Jason only spends about five minutes IN Manhattan, this movie was just plain crap.*It should be mentioned that since V goes off on such a tangent that it doesn't even include Jason, I do not consider to even be part of the series. "I agree that a majority of remakes suffer from uninspired thinking and lack of creativity. With horror movies (see also sci-fi, action, comedy) there is the abilty to create a brand. Brands in dramas are rarer but they exist (i.e. Godfather Trilogy) Most of these remakes we see now I can only assume were brewed in some cavernous boardroom with movie producers bargaining and bidding on horses named "Texas Chainsaw Franchise"and "Halloween Money Machine." It becomes soley a business deal. They are buying likeliness and iconic horror villians with familar stories. Now, for me to say that this is an unethical practice that rips the artistic rug out from beneath fright flicks would be ridiculous. Even though they aren't all winners I love the Friday the 13th movies (OK, well Part 8 and Jason X are both hard to watch because they're just awful), same goes for Nightmare on Elm street, Hellraiser, etc. Even though I am not the biggest fan of the Saw franchise... I saw a preview ... " [More]
