"The most difficult part for me in actually writing a critique of this movie is figuring out whether or not I actually liked the film. There were surefire moments of brilliance, but there were also long, disturbing stretches where I was tempted to turn the movie off. As mentioned by almost every other review of the film I've read, this movie explores all sorts of depths of depravity and doesn't let up. It seems to have the most fixation upon how almost every sleaze-bag guy that Jeremiah's mother dates is also a closet pedophile. The film also doesn't shy away from the fact that Jeremiah's mother is not only participating in all sorts of debauchery herself, but also knowingly introducing Jeremiah to all of the drugs and alcohol that she consumes on a daily basis. I guess, in a way, this is really the main redeeming quality of the film: it doesn't shy away from anything, especially when it's bizarre and cringe-inducing. I don't think anyone can say that Asia Argento doesn't give a ... " [More]

"I would be telling a lie if I claimed to be a fan of westerns. I think I have seen my share although there are a great many classic westerns that I have not seen nor do I plan to see. Why is this? I think my expectations as to what a western should be are not in line with what most westerns are and this usually leads to a lackluster viewing experience. All that being said I have seen a few that have made a lasting impression on me and oddly enough most of these films were released in recent years. The film -- The Proposition – for example, was an experience, much like 3:10 to Yuma that caught me completely by surprise. I suppose all of this is a very roundabout way of saying that I don’t expect much from westerns and that coming across one that moves me is a special occasion. This is why I am writing now. 3:10 to Yuma is what I call a man’s man kind of movie. It’s the kind of movie that I cannot imagine many women watching and enjoying. In part this is becau ... " [More]

"The initial TV ads for 3:10 to Yuma didn’t appeal to me at all. Sure, I saw Christian Bale’s sharp mug and the reliable Russell Crowe staring back at me, yet I still wasn’t interested in the thing. Bale is one of my favorite actors and Crowe rarely turns in a drab performance, but I surely wasn’t going to be first in line to catch a lightly-hyped remake of a ’50s Western. The movie looked like something my granddad would enjoy but would leave me shifting in my seat. Then a few critics I respect starting tossing out words like “glorious,” “riveting” and “Oscar” when describing it. Then it hit number one at the box office on its first week out. Then I finally caught it on Saturday.

"In my opinion, the best movies of 2007...I gave an explanation of each, feel free to debate or call me an idiot or whatever. 1. No Country for Old Men Easily the best film I've seen in 2007...say what you want about the ending, but I think it's one of the most important statements about America ever put onto film. Anton Chigurh is by far the best villain I've seen in a real long time...his face when he's strangling the cop in the beginning still creeps me out when I think about it. The Cohen's have created their masterpiece of a resume of masterpieces. Call it, friendo.2. There Will Be Blood Yeah, I know these have been the top two films on almost every critic's list this year, but after seeing both of them I definitly understand why. Daniel-Day Lewis is fricken amazing as Daniel Plainview... one of the most explosive, invigorating performances I have ever seen from any actor. P.T. Anderson has outdone himself with this one. And not to mention the ... " [More]

"i have a wonderful picture of all my movie ticket stubs from this year in a pile but i can’t get it transferred to my filmblog (yes, i save my ticket stubs and scrapbook them at the end of the year…i know, it’s sad really)! armed with discount movie coupons, i saw 118 movies this year at the theater and, as usual, it was really hard to narrow them down but here’s my list, for what it’s worth. some are from 2006 that i didn’t see until later. my 15 favorite movies at the theater in 2007the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert fordthe diving bell and the butterflythe lives of othersjunothe painted veilonceno country for old men< " [More]

"3:10 to YumaUnforgiven and Open Range have found success recently but in comparison to the rate at which they were pumped out during the days of John Wayne the western genre is on the down swing of its popularity. The morals behind the tales are still relevant the same way the Aesop's fables are but I believe that people are more interested in comedies or the more futuristic gadget based movies such as Bond where technology is the star more so than the story.3:10 to Yuma is a strong story about redemption, validation and respect. Dan Evans (Christian Bale) plays a struggling rancher who is experiencing tough times from his land and his family. His son idolizes bandit Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) who is captured by the determined local sheriff. Capturing Wade brings on its own set of problems that lead to Evans being signed up to help deliver him to the 3:10 train to Yuma in the next city. Of course Wade's gang, led by Charlie Prince (Ben Foster), will at nothing to free hi ... " [More]
