Directed by John Landis.
Expanding on their Saturday Night Live characters, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star as Jake and Elwood Blues, two white boys with black soul. Sporting cool shades and look-alike suits, Jake and Elwood are dispatched on a "mission from God" by their former teacher, Sister Mary Stigmata (Kathleen Freeman). Said mission is to raise $5000 to save their old church from demolition. In the course of their zany adventures, the Blues Brothers run afoul of neo-Nazi Henry Gibson, perform the theme from Rawhide before the most unruly bar crowd in written history, and lay waste to hundreds of cars on the streets and freeways of Chicago. In case you aren't swept up in the infectuous nuttiness of the brothers Blue, you might have fun spotting film's legion of guest stars, including James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Candy, Carrie Fisher, Steve Lawrence, Twiggy, Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman), Frank Oz, and Steven Spielberg. John Belushi's death put an end to hopes for a true Blues Brothers sequel. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Few classic films are as unlikely as The Blues Brothers. I doubt that anyone in 1980 would have predicted at the time that two and a half hour musical adaptation of a Saturday Night Live skit would so endure itself to so many people. And frankly, I have heard time understanding why this movie is so popular- there are some laughs, yes, but the movie is not as hilarious as its reputation would suggest, and there is some okay music, but nothing earth shattering. The funniest thing about The Blues Brothers are The Blues Brothers themselves, or rather, the idea of them. There is something that about these two odd looking white guys, one tall and skinny, the other short and stocky, who wear sunglasses at all times and never smile, but sure play the blues and dance well. But the jokes they tell and the occurrences they find themselves are in never as funny as the characters personalities- they don't belong in such a complicated world, only wanting to do one thing- play the blues. "1. Manhattan: A Woody Allen classic all too often overshadowed by Annie Hall. The story is pretty much the same as most of Allen's films. He plays a lusty, bumbling New Yorker seeking love wherever he can find ita search which lands him with a high schooler and later his best friend's mistress. With Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton. 2. Small Time Crooks: One of the few recent Woody Allen films worth seeing. The story follows one cookie manufacturer from near failure and foreclosure to fortune and fraud: delightful! 3. Coming to America: Eddie Murphy at his best! Murphy as an African prince arrives in Queens to find a wife and goes undercover as an employee at fast-food restaurant. 4. Trading Places: Eddie Murphy was so funny once, what happened? Oh, right. Enter: Norbit. Here, Dan Aykroyd and Murphy team up to get back at Aykroyd's boss and stick it to The Man. 5. Blues Brothers: Another fine moment for Dan Aykroyd. Aykroyd and Jon ... " [More]

"Ah The Blues Brothers. In good old Chicago.I think I've seen it more than once actually, but I guess parts of it still just didn't stick.I still can't picture anything with Donald Duck, a winnebego or superglue. Tough guy, a couple of singers, and that old dude with the funny voiceRDWMWNBJ " [More]

"Belushi’s second best performance, and he’s got Aykroyd along for the ride. Great music. Even Pee Wee Herman makes a cameo. Oh, and Steven Spielberg too. “Are you police officers?” …”No ma’am, we’re musicians”…HA!! " [More]

"My list is more guilty pleasures as actors, not films. I could probably make Top 5 lists out of each of these people and more... but here goes: 1. Sylvester Stallone: Rocky II, III & IV. I don't include the first because it's a great movie and I am not ashamed of liking it. I didn't include V because it's crap. And I haven't seen Rocky Balboa so I can't say one way or the other. Also Cop Land.2. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 80s (and early 90s) catalog defines guilty pleasure over and over. I hate that I like Twins, Terminator, The Running Man, Total Recall, Predator. However, I will proudly say that I like T2. Now if only T3 had been watchable...3. Keanu Reeves - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey, Matrix: Reloaded/Revolutions (the first wasn't a guilty pleasure in my book), Point Break , Feeling Minnesota, My Own Private Idaho, The Devil's Advocate, The Watcher.I could almost combine 4 - 5 and some of them probably aren't ... On "a mission from God," brothers Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) tear up Chicago in inimitable style. The flimsy plot, in which the brothers try to raise money to save their childhood orphanage by reuniting their old band, is a good excuse for a series of comic vignettes and lovingly realized musical scenes. The film is an unapologetic homage to rhythm-and-blues in all its popular derivatives, from Cab Calloway to James Brown to Aretha Franklin, all of whom appear, along with other musicians, in the film. Having Carrie Fisher play Jake's homicidal ex-girlfriend was one of the film's many brilliant uses of cameos. This overlong (135-minute) John Landis-directed comedy's dead spots are forgotten in the euphoria of the coolest, funniest car chase scene ever shot. The Blues Brothers became an enduring favorite and a television evergreen because its protagonists live out the wishes of legions of white soul-music aficionados, and rarely have Saturday Night Live alumni so successfully transformed a TV routine into a feature-length film, despite many attempts. Belushi and Aykroyd are at the top of their deadpan game. The 1998 sequel Blues Brothers 2000 sorely missed Belushi and the original's fresh energy. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide
