A tuneful Roy Rogers Western, Along the Navajo Trail finds Dale Evans' Lazy A Ranch under siege from nasty J. Richard Bentley (Douglas Fowley), who is in cahoots with a greedy oil company aiming to erect a pipeline through the property come what may. Drifter Rogers, who is really a U.S. Marshal in disguise, eventually gets the goods on the villains with the assistance of Nestor Paiva's band of Mexican gypsies, comedy sidekick George "Gabby" Hayes, and vivacious Estelita Rodriguez. ~ Hans J. is neutral about it.
As usual, everything but the kitchen sink is thrown into this Roy Rogers music Western, including a lively rendition of Hungarian Dance No. 5 performed by gypsy dancing girls. The plot, based on William Colt MacDonald's Sleepy Horse Range, is of course merely an excuse for Rogers to perform the title tune, "Free as the Wind," "Saskatoon," and other standards while romancing Dale Evans. Trigger, "the Smartest Horse in the Movies," George "Gabby" Hayes, and Bob Nolan and The Sons of the Pioneers (who perform Nolan's "Cool Water") are along for the ride; but when all is said and done, Along the Navajo Trail really belongs to the often overlooked Dale Evans, whose flair for comedy and way with a line remains a revelation. ~ Hans J.
