Directed by Michael Wadleigh.
Wolfen, a frightening horror movie based upon a novel by Whitley Strieber, is an absorbing update on the werewolf legend. Detective Dewey Wilson (Albert Finney) is assigned to investigate the strange murder of a millionaire and his wife in a downtown park. Wilson and his friend, city coroner Whittington (Gregory Hines), aided by criminal psychologist Rebecca Neff (Diane Venora) connect the killing to those of several others, primarily winos, drug addicts and derelicts, all of whom seem to have been mutilated by wild animals. Their search leads them to a group of Native Americans led by Edward James Olmos who tell them of a legend of a superior species that once roamed the area, but now are living and hunting in the slums of New York. The film is engrossing, frightening and intelligent, with sensational special effects. Director Michael Wadleigh uses these effects to great advantage, frequently showing the movements of the characters through the eyes of the "Wolfen." This film is also the screen debut of Gregory Hines. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

"Yeah, so anyhow, the 'classic' Werewolf that we all know and love today suddenly appeared at about the same time and place as did the Vampire... (who was able to transform into a wolf at will...) ... Also, in 15th century Europe, there were Witches... these creatures also had the ability to transform into an animal, usually a cat or a WOLF, at will! Could it be that all three of these myths are based on the same creature? I think it is possible... Anyway, I wanted to use this space to talk about a couple of my favorite movies about Werewolves ... The first one being The Company Of Wolves ... Anybody who has seen this movie will instantly recognize that the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood' is an allegorical Werewolf story! Great movie otherwise, as well... stunning visuals and special effects and a breathtakingly beautiful young star named Sarah Patterson... she was in only one other movie that I know of and that was a rather bizarre version of ... "Yes, joem, the creatures in "Wolfen" are NOT 'werewolves'... you are correct! They are some highly intelligent 'Wolf-like' creatures, with 'infrared' vision, that have existed on this planet for eon's! This movie is about a 'pack' of these creatures living in the 'heart' of New York! There IS an Indian 'shapeshifter' in this story, and I think the point is... Who is to say that THESE creatures were not the basis for the ORIGINAL 'Werewolf'' myths! As I said, this movie is to 'Werewolf' films what "The Serpent And The Rainbow" is to 'Zombie' films! A long time ago, I read about an 'historical document' from France, I believe, in the 18th or 19 century that describes how a 'stranger' turned himself in to the local 'police' and claimed he was a 'werewolf' and asked if they would lock him in a cell for the night as there was going to be a full moon that night and ... "There is only one problem with your secret 'fantasy', Cutie... er, 'Froggy'... , and that is, by all accounts, once you are transformed you have no control over WHO you choose to kill... (notice I said 'kill' and not 'eat'!)... In other words, once you are transformed you have the 'bloodlust' upon you! You would view ALL people as 'something to KILL' and Not, necessarily, as FOOD! And it doesn't matter WHO that person is.... you would only want him/her DEAD! Just look to where it all started with Lon Chaney Jr.'s portrayal in a FEW of the old 'Universal' movies! "The Wolfman" , "Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man" , "House Of Frankenstein" , etc. ... In ALL of these examples the 'victims' are described as "...having thier throats torn out as if by some beast... a WOLF, maybe..." ... There is no mention of them having been 'devoured' in any way! Although it IS 'hinted' at a bi ... " [More]
