Directed by Terence Young.
Wait Until Dark is an innovative, highly entertaining and suspenseful thriller about a blind housewife, Susy Hendrix (Audrey Hepburn). Independent and resourceful, Susy is learning to cope with her blindness, which resulted from a recent accident. She is aided by her difficult, slightly unreliable young neighbor Gloria (Julie Herrod) with whom she has an exasperated but lovingly maternal relationship. Susy's life is changed as she is terrorized by a group of criminals who believe she has hidden a baby doll used by them to smuggle heroin into the country. Unknown to Susy, her photographer husband Sam (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) took the doll as a favor for a woman he met on an international plane flight and unwittingly brought the doll to the couple's New York apartment when the woman became afraid of the customs officials. Alone in her apartment and cut-off from the outside world, Susy must fight for her life against a gang of ruthless criminals, led by the violent, psychotic Roat (Alan Arkin). The tension builds as Roat, aided by his gang, impersonates police officers and friends of her husband in order to win Susy's confidence, gaining access to her apartment to look for the doll. The climax of the film, a violent physical confrontation between Susie and Roat in her dark kitchen, is one of the most memorable and frightening scenes in screen history. All performances are outstanding, particularly those of Audrey Hepburn who plays a vulnerable, but self-reliant woman, and Alan Arkin, in perhaps his best role, as the ruthless, manipulative Roat. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

"“Wait Until Dark.” My father rented this one night in when I was nine or ten years old and scarred for life is a terribly accurate way to put it. I simply cannot watch it now to re-confirm my memory of it but there was no release until the movie was over. It was a constant building clench that left me sleeping with the lights on for days. That apartment just seemed to get smaller and smaller and darker and darker. Not only did the movie scare the poo out of me, but seeing it at such a young age ruined thrillers for me forever. The ones I do watch are the watered down TNT versions with the mute button engaged at the first note of creepy music. Movies nobody would describe as scary are crossed right off my list and if a scary preview is shown before a movie any friend of mine knows the next words out of my mouth will be, “Well... not gonna see that.” There were even parts of “Broken Lizard's Club Dread,” and “Shaun of the Dead” ... "This is a quite effective thriller. The filmmakers slowly raise the level of tension as the heroine realizes that she is at the center of a sinister plot. There is something satisfying about watching Audrey Hepburn find her inner strength and intelligence to save herself and foil the villains' machinations. Hepburn is aided by her costars as well. The men playing the villains (Alan Arkin, Richard Crenna, and Jack Weston) are convincing and really fun to watch, and Julie Herrod is great as an awkward 12-year-old girl who helps Hepburn turn the tables on her antagonists. "I thought "Nightbreed" was an EXCELLENT movie! Although I don't remember much about the soundtrack... And I must correct you on one point, beatgirl... "Psycho" is not only a 'Horror' movie, it is one of the top 10 Horror Movies ever made, in my book... AND one of the best MOVIES ever made, period! If you check some of the earlier discussions in here, you will notice that my definition of 'Horror' is very broad indeed! For instance, "Deliverance" IS a Horror Movie! "Wait Until Dark" IS a Horror Movie! "See No Evil" IS a Horror Movie! "The Spiral Staircase" (and all remakes) IS a Horror Movie! I think you get the Idea... "The Wizard Of OZ" IS a Horror Movie! ... Holy s**t! I thought ther was only one! when I pulled that movie up to link it, there were like 7 or 8 movies all with the same name!!! I am STUNNED! " [More]

"Kudos to Alan Arkin - complete surprise in this category, but an often underappreciated actor (my favorite Alan Arkin roles: Grosse Pointe Blank, Wait Until Dark, Catch 22, Edward Scizzorhands, Glenngerry Glen Ross, Little Miss Sunshine)Kudos to Ennio Morricone, one of my favorite film composers, and a tribute long overdue (my favorite Morricone scores: Once Upon a Time in America, Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, Once Upon a Time in the West, Untouchables)Kudos to Martin Scorcese, long overdue for a TON of work equally worthyoverall show quality - give Ellen the boot, those sillouette dancers the boot, bring on much more film clip montages, when is Hollywood going to understand that film is the medium they excell in, not stagecraft - leave that to the Tonys -- I'd also appreciate more attention on the scores to the films and much less attention to the 'original song' categoryNot a Jack Black or Will Ferrell fan, but their segment was the funniest thing of the night. "Forget Breakfast at Tiffany's...this is a Hepburn flick that guys may actually like -- an amazing film full of suspense and intrigue. Sure, it's been retold again and again by your local high school drama class, but this has me spellbound every time I see it. Maybe it's the intriguing Alan Arkin character, the crafty dialog and deception, or Hepburn's vulnerability that gets me going. It's also cool that almost the entire film takes place in one New York apartment, but you feel a huge range of emotion in it.It's suspenseful, yet not in the vapid, "Halloween-like stalking by a goalie-masked murderer" sort of way. Well worth seeing if you're into classic suspense. " [More]

Wait Until Dark is a memorably suspenseful thriller, even more so considering that the film's action rarely leaves its one-apartment setting. Much like the work of Alfred Hitchcock -- most notably 1948's Rope -- Dark is a desolate, brutal film. Best-known for his work on early James Bond films, director Terence Young subtly builds tension until the pulse-racing climax. Much of the menace is courtesy of Alan Arkin's stellar performance. In one of his first screen roles, Arkin is so compellingly amoral that he almost steals the movie from his more illustrious co-star, Audrey Hepburn. Still, the lovely Hepburn holds her own, bringing depth and compassion to the role of the blind woman being terrorized by Arkin's smarmy villain. She was nominated for her fifth Academy Award for her performance as the innocent-yet-determined victim. ~ Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide
