Directed by Charles B. Griffith.
A group of fishermen and seamen band together to fight a monstrous finny fiend that is terrorizing a resort. They are in humorous competition with hotel guests, who hope to win a prize by killing the beast. In one particularly grisly bit of humor, a dead fisherman's body is put to really good use. The director was a scriptwriter for the Roger Corman version of A Little Shop of Horrors, and the antic sensibilities he showed there also inform this peculiar little movie. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Roger Corman weighed in on the Jaws phenomena with the help of frequent collaborator Charles B. Griffith to make Up From the Depths -- a thoroughly draining exercise in C-grade low budget filmmaking. This horribly dubbed horror flick fails at achieving any of its frights, nor does it ever really tweak the funny bone despite its endless attempts to do so. The movie does present a gloriously junky rubber creature that can be spotted in a few oh so brief moments, though only those with a remote control will be able to truly take it in for all its cheap glory. Most of all, the flick is hampered by a jarring score that sounds like recycled background tracks from '70s TV era soundtracks, which is sad considering the film was Academy Award-Winner James Horner's debut feature. To be fair, the flick does use utilize its exotic scenery to a nice extent, while its ad campaign features a memorable riff on the Jaws poster art, but that's basically the best that can be said about this poor production. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
