Directed by Tommy Davis.
Filmmaker Tommy Davis documents one woman's eighteen year cycle of fear and despair in this tale of marital bliss gone tragically awry. Wendy Maldonado was your average, small town girl. Married at sixteen, the young bride looked forward to a life of marital bliss alongside her new husband in Grant Pass, Oregon. Her dreams of happiness became a waking nightmare, however, when her once kind husband turned into a violent and unpredictable tyrant. For eighteen years, Wendy endured unimaginable abuse while attempting to protect her children. Then, one day, after finally being pushed beyond her breaking point, Wendy Maldonado dealt with her husband in the only way she knew could be truly effective. Candid interviews and extensive home video footage combine to chronicle a story of a family that, in retrospect, seemed to be doomed from the very beginning. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"The story was certainly worthwhile and very thought provoking. I have no qualms with the concept, but the execution was so amateurish. The editing was terrible. Where was the focus puller? So many butt cuts and couldn't even use an out of focus to get into focus shot very well. I will say that after I got through all that things did pick up with the story and somehow got better in the viewing. I truly admire anyone who picks up a camera and makes a film, but this caliber of film certainly didn't belong in SXSW, but then again, I saw worse this year. " [More]

"One Minute to Nine is one of those documentaries where the right footage falls in the hands of a really gifted filmmaker who knows intuitively how to treat it, and creates something that will blow you away. It begins as the story of the last five days before a battered wife who killed her husband goes to prison. What it becomes is a Hitcockian thriller that leaves you terminally wondering about justice and how messily it’s dealt out. I interviewed director Tommy Davis (Mojados: Through the Night - currently in my queue) about when he discovered this movie was going way beyond his original scope and why it’s causing him to “give a lot of bad interviews.” SXSW 2008: Tommy Davis interview (Written transcript after the jump) (more…) Originally posted on:SpoutBlog " [More]

"FilmCouch is coming from the exotic Austin, TX. Guess what we talk about. That’s right. Movies at SXSW. To name a few: Yeast, Medicine for Melancholy, One Minute to Nine, Wellness, The Promotion and the unforgettable Andre Williams (Agile, Mobile, Hostile). Note: After we recorded this podcast, Wellness won the SXSW Grand Jury Award. FilmCouch 61 SXSW news, reviews, interviews and discussions Originally posted on:SpoutBlog " [More]

"One Minute to Nine is one of three films that I’ve been wandering around Austin championing as a must-see, and every time I offer the in-a-nutshell synopsis to someone who hasn’t heard of it, their jaw drops. This is what I’ve been saying: One Minute to Nine is about Wendy Maldonado, a woman whose husband beat and emotionally tortured her and her three sons for two decades. One day, the woman cracks and beats her husband’s head in with a hammer. The film tracks her last few days before she goes to prison for the crime, as she explains why she did it, why she feels no remorse, and why ten years in a prison is a victory compared to what her life would have been like had her husband lived.
