"There was little room for anyone who wasn't a devout fan at the X-Files sneak peek (L.A. Film Festival on Sunday). For those of you who have not followed the series since it went off the air in 2002 the fan base is decidedly composed of young women, many of whom were not old enough to watch the show when it first premiered in 1993. The girls went wild for David Duchovny as he tossed back his bangs and walked on stage. It felt like the ceiling of the Crest Theatre in Westwood was about to collapse at any minute. Creator Chris Carter was shy and self-effacing. He seemed like a pleasant guy. Likewise screenwriter Frank Spotnitz. After two brief clips featuring F.B.I. agents crunching and jingling about in the snow while looking for a missing woman's body the lights came up. That was it for the sneak. The only thing revealed on film was that Gillian Anderson and Duchovny are both ten years older and Gillian has a new hair-do. Nice to see them back in action. Next came the Q& ... " [More]

"Hear that? That is the sound of countless Botox-enhanced faces within the film industry simultaneously stretching to a smile after the opening weekend of ‘Iron Man.’ As everything else in these current economically shaky times, the film industry hobbled into 2008, weakened by a writers strike and sagging returns. Who would have thought Robert Downey Jr. would be the one to save us from this mess? But in he flew (granted, he was playing a character by the name of Tony Stark, but really, what’s the difference?), cracking $100 million in its first weekend alone. Of course, studio execs are quick to point out all the ‘firsts’ and “biggests’ for the film – the first non-sequel film to reach that benchmark in May; Downey’s biggest opening day ever; the first comic book-inspired film that was released under a waning crescent moon to gross that much; the biggest debut of a character with an incredibly angular goatee… and so on. ... "Wow, it was hard to pick a winner, but it’s frozenhamster for his 4/20 post-- “Ghostbusters: London Calling. An Edgar Wright Film …England is about to get slimed! When ghosts get a passport to Europe they take London by storm and it's up to a special team of British parapsychologists to save the city. Killing ghosts and making jokes, all before tea time.” Steve Coogan (24 Hour Party People) as Peter Venkman, Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) as Ray, Martin Freeman (Tim on the British Office) and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) as Winston. Besides being a really fun idea, I like it because it’s its own thing and doesn’t try to “replace” anyone, especially the inimitable Bill Murray. Second prize: minerwerks – your post is a tour de force of film history, and thank you for directing our thoughts to the demented world of David Heavener (Kill Crazy). I'd also like to mention lazyalchemist's post. I especially liked imagining Rainn Wilson (The Office&rsq ... " [More]

"Ladies and gentlemen, we're but a mere seven days from the official start of the 2008 summer movie season. Hollywood is hoping the current box office slump will take a turn for the better and begin to rise with releases such as 'Speed Racer', the next trip to Narnia 'Prince Caspian' and Indiana Jones' highly anticipated adventure 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' all in the coming weeks. This past week Entertainment Weekly put out their summer preview issue which includes projections for what they believe will be the top ten grossing films of the summer. That list is as follows:$355.9 mil 01 - 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'$310.8 mil 02 - 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian'$280.4 mil 03 - 'Hancock'$280.3 mil 04 - 'Wall-E'$267.7 mil 05 - 'Iron Man'$255 mil 06 - 'The Dark Knight'$244.6 mil 07 - 'Kung Fu Panda'$176.5 mil 08 - 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor'$147.2 mil 09 - 'The Incredible Hulk'$146.6 mil 10 - 'Tropic ... "While the San Diego Comic Con has been for some time a significant part of Hollywood’s marketing calendar — and it only continues to grow, as was shown with last year’s very heavily covered event — there hasn’t been as much emphasis put on the New York Comic Con, despite its logical opportunity and its more pertinent proximity to the opening of the blockbuster movie season. Compared to San Diego’s convention, which takes place in July, too late to really showcase the present year’s releases, New York’s is in April, right before the first of the big summer release dates. But Hollywood’s presence seems to be more noticeable at this year’s event. Looking at a list of some of the previews and attractions, located at Super Hero Hype, there’s promotions going on for movies like X-Files 2, Hellboy 2 and The Incredible Hulk, all of which could use the extra buzz from its core demographic of comic book and movie geeks. There’s also the world premiere of the new teaser trailer for Frank Mill ... " [More]
