Directed by Ken Russell.
Tommy (Roger Daltrey) is a "deaf, dumb and blind kid" who retreats into himself after the death of his father. His mother, Nora (Ann-Margret), and stepfather Frank (Oliver Reed) take him to see a specialist (Jack Nicholson) but Tommy is apparently a hopeless case. That is, until Tommy discovers that "he sure plays a mean pinball." Tommy gains fame when he defeats the Pinball Wizard (Elton John) for the world championship. As a result, Tommy becomes such a celebrity that he even founds his own religious cult. But his fans begin to commercialize his fame, while Tommy wants to stick to the straight and narrow. When Tommy wants to end the commercialization of his message, his supporters accuse him of being hypocritical and turn on him. Ann-Margret, with a slinky red dress slit way up the side, was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, losing out to Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

"This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry.TommyOk this movie is just ridiculous. I'm not sure if I would have liked it more if I had been more familiar with all of the music first, but something just feel uncomfortable about it. Maybe I'd like it more if I was stoned. Although I usually don't like being stoned, but I mean if I did.I did watch the Pinball Wizard section over a few more times before I returned the DVD. I'm not sure if it's because it's the most familiar song in the movie, or because the sequence is just plain awesome, or because Elton John brings something extra, but that part seems to exceed the rest of the movie. Except for maybe Fiddle About! Keith Moon is a real creep! The mom and dad were just plain annoying. Tina Turner I have always found extremely frightening and disturbing. And that scene where they are basically wallowing around in chocola ... " [More]

"YIKES!Actually I did just watch Tommy recently. Maybe if I'd been more familiar with the music I would have got into it, but the only song I knew and loved really was Pinball Wizard. I guess I'm not a true Who fan. But that was my favorite sequence too. Elton John with the big shoes and playing his pinball machine keyboard. " [More]

"Hey, Sidepocket, I agree with Risselada's comment here; there is potential in this group but we need some focus. I for one would love to weigh in on spirtiual themes, especially since the last three movies I saw were Diary of a Country Priest, Ordet and Breaking the Waves, and not because I was trying to watch spiritually themed movies! Synchronicity eh? " [More]

"I just saw Tommy for the first time last weekend. So fucking rediculous. I made sure to watch the part with Elton John a second time though. That's my favorite song and it's great to hear him sing it.[/quote]How did Tommy get on your "movies to watch" list? [/quote]Ha! I'm not exactly sure. I was doing that movie by year countdown thing and I just stuck out at me. I like a lot of the stuff by the who, and I don't just like hearing them, but I like watching them too. And I heard Jack Nicholson and some other folks were in it. I also know a guy who has mentioned it several times, but now maybe I'm thinking he was just referring to the album and not this crazy movie. " [More]

"Here’s the dilemma. I have a list of well over three thousand movies I want to see saved on IMDB. I have a subscription to Netflix and recently every time I return a DVD it has been an extremely arduous task to make the decision as to which movie I should see next. In an effort to narrow down my choices and make the process of choosing slightly less overwhelming I have devised a system, almost a bit of a game for me. Here’s how it goes. For my first film selection, I have narrowed the options down to only films that were released in the year 2006. Then after I have watched that movie, my next selection would have to be a film released in 2005. Then I would see a film from 2004, then 2003, etc. The process of deciding is still laborious, but actually quite a bit more exciting. (I'm going by IMDB as my source for release years)I have already been making a list and have also already begun watching the films. I decided this might be a good time to start fooling ... " [More]

"I saw this movie a couple years ago. My dad forced me to watch the whole thing, he seemed to think it was the greatest movie ever or something. I thought it was just plain weird. Because of this movie I was scarred for life. Though I'm not sure in what ways O__o I wouldn't watch it if I were you. Except I would, just so I could talk to people about it later. It's seriously messed up. ¡Yay Elton John! " [More]

The Who's Tommy was the first rock opera. When it came time to adapt the material for the silver screen, director Ken Russell, with his penchant for irreverent interpretations of classical musicians' lives and works, seemed like a natural fit. Russell certainly shapes the material to fit his particular vision; one is hard-pressed to think of any other filmmaker who would have Ann-Margret roll around in baked beans. Elton John, Eric Clapton, and Jack Nicholson all show up to sing a song, but mostly so that the audience will say, "look, there's more famous people," than to add anything musically or cinematically (only Tina Turner's rendition of "The Acid Queen" improves on, or even equals, the original performances). The album is, despite its length, compact and powerful, while the movie is visually, emotionally, and musically gaudy. Russell's visuals make it continuously watchable, but the film version of Tommy sacrifices the fragile emotional core of Pete Townshend's work for grandiose spectacle. Townshend is more rock, and Russell is more opera. The film adaptation of Quadrophenia would eventually capture Townshend's vision more clearly, but less spectacularly. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
