Directed by Rob Reiner.
Largely improvised by director Rob Reiner and his cast, This is Spinal Tap looks and sounds like a "real" documentary, with Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Christopher Guest as David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls, and Nigel Tufnel, the key members of a going-nowhere British heavy metal band called Spinal Tap. The "group" started as an informal skiffle band, eventually maturing into an R&B act called the Thamesmen (their hit was "Gimme Some Money"). After going through a psychedelic period with "Listen to the Flower People", the band mutated into Spinal Tap, a hard rock outfit responsible for such albums as "Intravenous DeMilo", "The Sun Never Sweats", and "Bent for the Rent". This Is Spinal Tap finds them in the midst of their first American tour in years as they support their new LP "Smell the Glove", with filmmaker Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner), who specializes in TV commercials, on hand to document the occasion. Just about anything that can go wrong does; shows get canceled, stage props go wrong, wireless guitar pickups start broadcasting air-traffic reports, no one shows up for in-store appearances, David's girlfriend tries to take over the band, they wind up billed second to a puppet show at an amusement park, and the group teeters on the verge of breakup. After the film's initial release, McKean, Guest, and Shearer did a short club tour as Spinal Tap; the "band" reunited in 1992 for a new album, "Break Like the Wind", followed by a full-fledged tour and TV special, The Return Of Spinal Tap. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"'Waiting for Guffman'... the Chris Guest film that i had unaccountably missed seeing up to now , unaccountably, because i AM one of those people who can quote, endlessly from 'This Is Spinal Tap'.. and , of course i love 'Best in Show' and 'A Mighty Wind'... so it's a must for Guest fans...members of the variable ensemble are here ..Catherine O'hara, Eugene Levy, Parker Posey ,Fred Willard..Apart from the beautifully observed , totally 'camped out' Corky,(Guest)...highlight,for me is Parker Posey in pure 'White Trash' gum-chewin mode, with her innapropriately sexy audition,of 'Teachers Pet'...seemingly quite happy , whatever happens!!... "Waiting for Guffman"... .hurrah!!! " [More]

"After a second-half career slump, director Rob Reiner has taken great pains to critic-proof his latest film, “The Bucket List.” “I'll pair two of America's best-loved elder actors, give them oddly endearing eccentricities, saddle them with a terminal illness, but show how they learn to LOVE LIFE!!!” he says (exclamation marks are a necessity here). So when a critic attempts to lay into the film for being rote and pandering, he or she will be derided for besmirching the actors' good names and callously drubbing those dealing with cancer.Well, bring on the hate mail. This is “Wild Hogs for the septuagenarian set (“Mild Hogs?” “Terminal Hogs?”), and it is a TV dinner of a film – everything spooned out in carefully measured proportions, pre-packaged and cold, without a hint of spice or surprise. The two ailing leads are a cantankerous old wisecracking coot and a gentle, grounded guru who are both diagnosed with the b ... "THE original mockumentary. For some reason this film has kinda lost popular steam over the years, but watch it again…it’s still funny. Maybe it needs to be shown on TV more often. The “Stonehenge” scene and the amp that has a volume switch that goes to 11….still hilarious. " [More]

"This category can be music documentaries, musicals, performance films, movies about the music industry (please no one say empire records PLEASE.) 1. Once - I cannot say/blog enough good things about this special special film. It is so lovely and heartbreaking. Watch it. I am not a Frames fan, but the melodramatic rock is perfect for this kind of movie. 2. Spinal Tap - yeah yeah kind of obvious, but it IS great. 3. Hedwig and the Angry Inch -one of my favorite musicals, and my favorite rock opera definitely.4. The Devil and Daniel Johnston - Not my favorite of musicians by far (i mean how much Daniel Johnston can one listen to?), but this is probably my favorite music documentary. 5. Amadeus - it has been years since i've seen this but as i recall it is an amazing film. I love music. i love films. enlighten me. " [More]

"This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entryHard Core LogoI chose to watch this movie based on strong urging from my friend Andy. I was also interested in the fact that it was distributed on Tarantino's Rolling Thunder series. It's sort of a punk-rock version of This is Spinal Tap. If you are big into punk-rock movies, philosophies, and aesthetic, you will probably find this movie funny and interesting. And if you are a Canadian punk, probably even more. Joe Dick is a serious dick, if you like people acting like total assholes. But if you are fascinated with any of history's punk-rock idols then you'll know what to expect.I had a fairly good time with it, but overall got a little tired of it. It was fun enough for one time, but I don't have any desire to ever see it again. Not much else I have to say about it.Rating: 7/10 " [More]

"1. Almost Famous (2000) - I know a lot of people who dismiss this film, but It's one of my favorites. I truly captures the spirit of the era. 2. Nashville (1975) - An epic, sprawling masterpiece. One of Altman's finest achievements. 3. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) - What more should be said. Fantastic music & possible the funniest movies of all time.4. High Fidelity (2000) - Frears & company perfectly capture the spirit of the book. Made the whole Top 5 list process even more relevant.5. A Hard Day's Night (1964) - Obviously the songs are amazing, but this is one of the most fun films you could ever see.Runners Up:The Red ShoesFive Easy Pieces Amadeus " [More]

"I'm not sure why everyone always makes these self imposed rules like "no bio pics" and such.First of all it's hard to pick movies about music because movies themselves almost ARE music. Music is certainly the closest artform to film.I'm just going to do a search for keyword "music" on IMDB for movies I rated and pick the ones that seems the most relevent. The Singing Detective. A great mini-series and a great film. The film took what was fundamentally British in the miniseries and found the American equivalent. Wow this movie is dense and beautiful. I've found out that the musicals I like that most are ones that don't have original music but use prexisting familiar music in a way to inform or contrast the themes of it's particular story.Amadeus. There's no reason this movie shouldn't count. It's just too good. The Ruling Class. Another great British film to use prewritten music to amazing darkly comic and profound effect. The Hole. This is ... If there has ever been a funnier and truer film about rock music than This Is Spinal Tap, no one has had the courage to show it in public. Rob Reiner's hilarious mockumentary chronicle of the misadventures of a group of intellectually challenged British rock musicians touring the U.S. manages to laugh at and with its protagonists at the same time. While the unending cluelessness of Spinal Tap's core members, David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), is a marvel to behold (especially the scene in which Nigel is baffled by the miniature pumpernickel on the deli tray), the leading characters also exude a goofy charm. As we watch their career slowly collapse around them, it's difficult not to feel a certain sympathy while laughing at their travails (it helps that they've seen enough of this coming to be more annoyed than despairing about their careers). Guest, McKean, and Shearer, who improvised most of the film's material, all did time in rock bands in the 1960s and '70s, and it seems as if they didn't forget a thing; no one who has ever been in a band, no matter how lowly, will fail to recognize the arguments at rehearsal, the on-stage screwups, the frustration of getting lost en route to a show, the thrill of hearing yourself on the radio, the chore of playing for an audience that doesn't care, and the excitement of a show that goes over. While This Is Spinal Tap takes deadly (and wildly funny) aim at the absurdities of the music business and the pompous excesses of the heavy metal scene, it's also made by people who understand the kick of a good rock show (for both performer and audience), and much of the humor comes from the fact that this seemingly absurd tale is not far at all from the truth. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
