"Last night, the trailer for Disaster Movie premiered on MySpace. You can watch it after the jump. But considering it’s completely lacking in disaster spoofage, I’ve instead reserved the top spot for Disaster! (aka Disaster the Movie!), a claymation feature from a few years back that appears to have done much better with the disaster genre parody. Plus, it co-stars Motley Crue (in clay form, that is). What does this Disaster Movie have? Apparently parodies of all this summer’s blockbusters (maybe Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer should have titled this one “Summer 2008 Movie” instead?). There are jokes on Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk and Hancock (maybe Friedberg and Seltzer are upset that someone else made Superhero Movie?) as well as Sex and the City meets You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (via Juno). Oh and there are some lame Hannah Montana and Enchanted references thrown in, too. Where are the disaster movies? Who knows? Maybe the title actually refers to the fact that this mov ... " [More]

"While scarping though yet another barrel’s bottom in attempting to drum up the words to encapsulate yet another Adam Sandler cinematic gastric bypass, I opted to take the higher road and rely on the pre-eminent wit of one Noel Coward for inspiration in slogging through “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.” His ode to depression, “The Bad Times are Just Around the Corner” accurately sums up just about every filmic experience I’ve had with one Adam Sandler. With the exception of some chuckles in “Happy Gilmore,” I have yet to find a redeeming quality to any of his films. But as each of his subsequent films continue to make box office dollars, I have now relinquished myself to the fact that there I am in the minority and that this comedic abomination is going nowhere soon. So I might as well embrace my disparity, just as the late, great Coward had more than 50 years ago. Ode to Depression (via Adam Sandler)with apologies to Noel Cowar ... " [More]

"You Don’t Mess with the Zohan opens today, and it’s apparently a terrible waste. Boy, do I miss the days when Adam Sandler played stupid and immature rather than skilled and pretending to be gay. At least then it seemed okay that he was possibly making everyone in the room dumber just for having watched his movie. I guess it’s fair that with everyone else doing man-boy comedy these days Sandler is trying to do something with a hint of a political message, but personally I liked it better when he was the least mannish, most boyish man-boy to hit the screen since Jerry Lewis. Making shampoo and conditioner fight? Comedic genius, in my opinion. Making a modern day Shampoo? Not genius at all. Looking back at Billy Madison, possibly his least mature but most consistently hilarious feature, it now seems as though Sandler has gone through a My Fair Lady sort of transition. And just as with that musical I prefer Eliza Doolittle with a Cockney accent, with Sandler I prefer the gibberish. I ... " [More]

"Hear that? That is the sound of countless Botox-enhanced faces within the film industry simultaneously stretching to a smile after the opening weekend of ‘Iron Man.’ As everything else in these current economically shaky times, the film industry hobbled into 2008, weakened by a writers strike and sagging returns. Who would have thought Robert Downey Jr. would be the one to save us from this mess? But in he flew (granted, he was playing a character by the name of Tony Stark, but really, what’s the difference?), cracking $100 million in its first weekend alone. Of course, studio execs are quick to point out all the ‘firsts’ and “biggests’ for the film – the first non-sequel film to reach that benchmark in May; Downey’s biggest opening day ever; the first comic book-inspired film that was released under a waning crescent moon to gross that much; the biggest debut of a character with an incredibly angular goatee… and so on. ... "Of the few thousand moviegoers polled for Fandango’s report on the ten most anticipated summer movies of 2008, I wonder if any were children. Missing from the list, which named Indiana Jones the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as highest and Sex and the City as lowest (though tied percent-wise with Speed Racer), are such animated tentpoles as DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda and Pixar’s Wall-E. The latter is even more shockingly absent due to the consideration that most Pixar films are enjoyed by adults as much as children. It’s definitely one of my top five movies to see this summer, and I’d bet its box office that it outperforms all of the movies listed below the Chronicles of Narnia sequel, Prince Caspian. The only dark horse I can see in there is Speed Racer, which could also be a huge hit with kids. The fact that it’s so far down on Fandango’s list either means really bad things for the Wachowskis or it’s just more reason to believe the poll is ignoring the significance of youth in the ... "While I’m on the subject of writing about comedy today, and since there aren’t any new trailers to comment on, I figured I’d go back and take another look at You Don’t Mess with the Zohan trailer. When the preview first hit, I decided not to write about it, because I know how difficult it is to write about comedy and I just know that people are apt to disagree with me over Adam Sandler’s career. As a youngster, I was a huge fan of Sandler and a constant defender of the merits of his comedy. But I think as I’ve grown older, I’ve lost the appreciation for that random and absurdist stuff — I think this somehow coincides with my waning enjoyment of Bunuel. For awhile, I thought it was Sandler who was growing up, doing movies for kids and families and making more efforts to do dramatic roles, but Zohan seems as immature as anything he’s ever done. The problem is, it also seems as simple and formulaic (in a 1980s comedy, there’s always a bad guy to make the third act less funny, Crocodil ... " [More]
