Directed by James Cameron.
A sequel to the low-budget sci-fi action thriller that made him and star Arnold Schwarzenegger A-list Hollywood names, writer/director James Cameron upped the ante with this follow-up by employing a more sweeping storyline and cutting-edge special effects. Linda Hamilton returns as Sarah Connor, now a single mother to rebellious teen John Connor (Edward Furlong), during the late nineties. Having been informed by a time-traveling soldier in the first film that John will one day grow up to become humanity's savior from a computer-controlled Armageddon, Sarah has responded by becoming a muscle-bound she-warrior bent on educating John in survival tactics and battle strategies. Her ranting about humankind's future has landed Sarah in an insane asylum and John in the foster care system. The rebellious John has responded to his situation by getting into scrapes with the law. When a new and improved Terminator android called the T-1000 (Robert Patrick) arrives from the future to eliminate John, an older model T-800 (Schwarzenegger) is sent to protect the boy. The T-1000, however, has the ability to morph itself into any shape it desires, allowing it chameleon-like powers and near indestructibility. The T-800 saves John's life and helps break Sarah out of the institution. Staying only one step ahead of the dogged T-1000, Sarah leads her son and the T-800 to the headquarters of Cyberdyne Systems, the company that will invent a robotic intelligence that will eventually take over the world. There, they attempt to convince inventor Miles Dyson (Joe Morton) to help them stop the future from ever occurring by destroying his work. Dyson sacrifices himself in an explosion to save the world, leading to a final showdown between the two Terminators at a steel foundry. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), which won four Oscars in technical categories for its groundbreaking effects, was followed by a short sequel filmed exclusively as an attraction for theme parks, Terminator 2: 3-D Battle Across Time (1996). ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"The Science Fiction Top 10 is notable for having what is arguably the least disputable number one on all of these lists in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Even after two decades, the film remains gorgeous and convincing-looking, and still capable of provoking debate about technology, the nature of intelligence, and humanity's identity and place in the universe. It has left an indelible mark on how the future, and how space and space travel, is visualized and imagined, especially, but not exclusively, on film. It's a masterful work, and it's difficult for me to think of a more deserving selection for the top of this list. At the same time, this Top 10 has its share of both puzzling selections and curious absences.E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) at number three leaves much to be desired. Not only does the movie not hold up to repeated viewing, but it also barely qualifies as science fiction. True, the AFI's definition of this genre calls for “imaginative speculation”, but it also sta ... " [More]

"So, yeah, I've watched this film in part or in whole perhaps 15 or 20 times, and it STILL manages to capture my attention every time. Everyone involved (Schwarzenegger, Cameron, Hamilton, Furlong, Patrick, Morton) was at the top of their game at the time, and I just watched the Blu Ray version of the film, and the SFX STILL hold up (except for some obvious stunt doubles). I especially like how you can either watch T1 for more back story, or if you're the casual viewer, this one stands on its own and offers a cohesive and entertaining story. If you haven't seen this yet, I would highly suggest getting out from the rock under which you live and viewing not only this film, but the first film for more robust viewing experience. " [More]

"The sequel to Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle opens in theaters today, and you can read my SXSW review of the movie, titled Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, over here. Though I enjoyed it, H&K2 disappointed me for taking on too much plot. But apparently some other reviews are favoring the second installment, and according to Craig Phillips at Green Cine, the matter has critics divided. Phillips, who marginally prefers the sequel, uses the opportunity to revisit those sequels that improved upon the original. Obviously, the list includes The Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and The Road Warrior. However, surprisingly, The Godfather Part II is not in the top ten, because he considers the first and second films tied, and he claims both Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Gremlins 2: The New Batch are only honorable mentions, because their definite superiority is up for debate (true, I’ve never been able to decide if I like them better than their respectiv ... "Discussion of this summer’s heroine lack is in full throttle. Last friday, New York’s Vulture blog asked, “Where are the Roles for Superwomen?; Stu at Defamer jumped off from there, ultimately suggesting an X-Men spin-off for Ellen Page; John at The Movie Blog listed reasons “Why Most Female Lead Action Films Don’t Succeed” (shocker: men can’t identify with or believe in strong — and strong — female characters). Now, adding to the conversation in the least noble way possible, USA Weekend presents the appropriately titled “Girls Want to Have Fun, Too”, a cover story (with the least flattering photos I’ve ever seen) from its summer movie preview that spotlights Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Liv Tyler as the “leading ladies” of the season’s three big comic book adaptations. Of course, each of these three actresses are only secondary figures to their superhero counterparts (in Iron Man, The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk, respectively). But that’s not the worst of it: the ... " [More]

"You're not weird, Ms. June! You're just...misunderstood. Like me! Yay! Alien vs. Predator happens to be one of my new favorite movies...well, "new" in the broadest sense of the word since it came out in '04.Anyway, my favoritest action movie EVER is Terminator 2. I used to watch that movie again and again when I was younger and my dad was out of town. I had my pot roast TV dinner and my blankey on the couch and I was ready to go. Besides that, Edward Furlong was just dreamy... " [More]

"Bridge to Terabithia marks director Gabor Csupo’s first attempt at a feature-length, live-action film. He seems to have a propensity to animation; he spent the eighties and nineties producing everything from a few episodes of the children’s cartoon Rugrats to the more adult Duckman. So it seems strange that the only real movie he’s ever made is as good as it is. Terabithia stars Josh Hutcherson as Jess, a boy with four sisters and parents who struggle to provide. He deals with the cruel way his middle-school classmates treat him with class and dignity, and releases with his talent for art and the fact that he races faster than any other kid in his grade. Along comes Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb), the new girl, who also seems to have a natural placeholder near the bottom of the social ladder. Together, they bond in the strangest of ways – they imagine a world of magic and trolls and dark wizards. In Terabithia, as their hand-made sign says, nothing can crus ... " [More]

"The Films: Terminator 2 vs. The MatrixAt their roots, T2 and The Matrix are essentially the same movie. The future is grim, machines have taken over, and a small band of rebel humans are attempting to take the world back, by force. With such similarities, a comparison is thus solicited: in a face off, would the Terminators beat the Machines of the Matrix? What if the good and bad guys in each film were switched? Could the Terminators beat Neo and Co.? How would John Conners and Mom fare against the Agents? What about John Conners versus Neo? Who is the more hearty insurgent? And what effect does the wearing of sunglasses have on one’s level of badassness? Let's compare, shall we?The Machines of Terminator 2 – T2 is by far the superior of the 3 Terminator films, but also an appropriate flick to use for the purpose of comparing actual machinery. There are two options here, the old stand by and the new and improved version. How do they rate? Arnold is pretty sturdy, sort o ... " [More]

"My list is more guilty pleasures as actors, not films. I could probably make Top 5 lists out of each of these people and more... but here goes: 1. Sylvester Stallone: Rocky II, III & IV. I don't include the first because it's a great movie and I am not ashamed of liking it. I didn't include V because it's crap. And I haven't seen Rocky Balboa so I can't say one way or the other. Also Cop Land.2. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 80s (and early 90s) catalog defines guilty pleasure over and over. I hate that I like Twins, Terminator, The Running Man, Total Recall, Predator. However, I will proudly say that I like T2. Now if only T3 had been watchable...3. Keanu Reeves - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey, Matrix: Reloaded/Revolutions (the first wasn't a guilty pleasure in my book), Point Break , Feeling Minnesota, My Own Private Idaho, The Devil's Advocate, The Watcher.I could almost combine 4 - 5 and some of them probably aren't ... Terminator 2: Judgment Day is most notable for being one of the first films to seamlessly combine a large amount of computer graphics -- in this case, the "morphing" technique -- with live action. Director James Cameron's big-budget sequel to his scruffy 1984 hit, Terminator, T2 capitalizes on Arnold Schwarzenegger's increased stardom by changing the persona of his indestructible cyborg character from creature of destruction to lovable protector. After a number of TV parts and supporting film roles, Linda Hamilton comes into her own as a believable action hero, expertly balancing human drama with a rough, taut physicality. Newcomer Edward Furlong is also quite good as her rebellious son. As with many of Cameron's films, however, the visual effects are what make the movie really stand out. Integrated into several lengthy action sequences, the indestructible molten-metal villain (played in human form by Robert Patrick) is audacious and exciting, enough so to avoid becoming stale even on repeat viewings. ~ Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide
