Directed by James Cameron.
Endlessly imitated, The Terminator made the reputation of cowriter/director James Cameron -- who would go on to make 1997's titanic Titanic -- and solidified the stardom of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie begins in a post-apocalyptic 2029, when Los Angeles has been largely reduced to rubble and is under the thumb of all-powerful ruling machines. Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), a member of the human resistance movement, is teleported back to 1984. His purpose: to rescue Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the mother of the man who will lead the 21st-century rebels against the tyrannical machines, from being assassinated before she can give birth. Likewise thrust back to 1984 is The Terminator (Schwarzenegger), a grim, well-armed, virtually indestructable cyborg who has been programmed to eliminate Sarah Connor. After killing two "Sarah Connors" who turn out to be the wrong women, he finally aims his gunsights at the genuine article. This is the film in which Schwarzenegger declared "I'll be baaaack" -- and back he was, in "kinder and gentler" form, in the even more successful Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"That is really interesting, Gor. It is really amazing how desensatized (spelling) I am anymore, half of these movies I kept thinking - there isn't any gorey scenes in that movie, but when I started thinking about it, yes there are some pretty gorey scenes. " [More]

"10/10 people. I was not expecting to be blown away by anything with a Sundance seal of approval. More often than not, Sundance endorsements are about quirky people patting other quirky people on the back and telling the rest of us we're idiots for liking Terminator. I do have an artsy fartsy streak, and I admit I'm a sucker for music-oriented films. Hell, I love That Thing You Do! How many grown men admit that?! Once feels like real time. It has a deliberately slow pace allowing the music and lyrics to tell a lot of the story. (not too slow -- it's not even 90 minutes) And please, fellow rockers, don't panic at the cover. Sure this is singer-songwriter territory. I have Lars Ulrich on my desktop wallpaper, ok? Some Kind of Monster is a work of genius. But this music is flat out good. I mean really, really good.Boy meets girl, boy very fond of girl. Both are lonely and at crossroads in their lives. Both are trying to determine if they're reboundin ... " [More]

"Porcupine, if you put up a pair like that, you need to splain it. My first guess is that you had to help out in a kindergarten class one time and it totally freaked you out? (But no. If you were comparing kindergarten children to predators, like I hoped, you would have put the movies in the opposite order. So I guess this is like Fistful of Dollars and Bronco Billy or Terminator and Junior.)In which case I offer Going My Way and Bad Education.Perspectives on war:Letters from Iwo Jima and We Were SoldiersPaths of Glory and JarheadTimes change:Max and Der Untergang (Downfall)Pan's Labyrinth and L'Auberge Espagnole " [More]

"My list is more guilty pleasures as actors, not films. I could probably make Top 5 lists out of each of these people and more... but here goes: 1. Sylvester Stallone: Rocky II, III & IV. I don't include the first because it's a great movie and I am not ashamed of liking it. I didn't include V because it's crap. And I haven't seen Rocky Balboa so I can't say one way or the other. Also Cop Land.2. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 80s (and early 90s) catalog defines guilty pleasure over and over. I hate that I like Twins, Terminator, The Running Man, Total Recall, Predator. However, I will proudly say that I like T2. Now if only T3 had been watchable...3. Keanu Reeves - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey, Matrix: Reloaded/Revolutions (the first wasn't a guilty pleasure in my book), Point Break , Feeling Minnesota, My Own Private Idaho, The Devil's Advocate, The Watcher.I could almost combine 4 - 5 and some of them probably aren't ... As relentless as the taciturn titular villain, The Terminator (1984) established James Cameron as a master of action, special effects, and quasi-mythic narrative intrigue, while turning Arnold Schwarzenegger into the hard-body star of the 1980s. With a budget well under $10 million, Cameron created a dystopic, trashed future world ruled by sinister robots, before returning to a darkly ominous 1984 Los Angeles where Schwarzenegger's leather-clad cyborg fits right in. Like the adversaries in Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982), the Terminator, with his computer matrix vision, embodied 1980s technological anxiety, an implacable, human-looking assassin engineered by machines and empowered through nuclear holocaust. Schwarzenegger's pumped-up physical presence, sparse dialogue, and "I'll be back" slyness rendered him both terrifying and charismatic; as with Sylvester Stallone, his body would become his signature special effect. With a time-bending romance to temper the perpetual violence, The Terminator became a sleeper hit, powering Cameron, Schwarzenegger, and producer/co-writer Gale Anne Hurd to the forefront of Hollywood action movies. As Schwarzenegger's image softened by the late 1980s, Cameron resurrected him as a "kinder, gentler" Terminator in the blockbuster sequel Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991). ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide
