Directed by Matt Reeves.
Producer J.J. Abrams teams with writer Drew Goddard and director Matt Reeves for this frenetic tale of a powerful destructive force that descends upon New York City, and the four desperate survivors who put their lives on the line to embark on a perilous rescue mission. Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David) is a young American professional who has recently been offered a coveted new job in Japan. Eager to send his older sibling off in style, Rob's younger brother Jason (Mike Vogel) and his girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas) organize a surprise going-away party to take place the night before Rob boards his Eastern-bound flight. As the party gets underway, Rob's longtime friend and current love interest Beth (Odette Yustman) shows up with another man as the dejected guest of honor's best-pal Hud (T.J. Miller) encourages partygoer Marlena (Lizzy Caplain) to wish him an on-camera farewell despite the fact that they barely know one another. Moments after Beth storms out following a bitter skirmish with Rob, the entire New York City skyline goes dark. Power is restored a moment later, prompting partygoers to turn their attention towards the news, where they learn that a freight tanker has been overturned in New York Harbor. Racing to the rooftop in hopes of getting a better look at the situation, the group is terrified to witness a massive explosion that rains debris across midtown Manhattan, causing mass chaos and unparalleled destruction. But the worst is yet to come, because it soon becomes apparent that this is not the work of a terrorist or an act of war, but the massive creature beyond human comprehension. Now, as the military moves in and the streets of New York City become a virtual warzone, Rob, Lily, Marlena, and Hud race to rescue Beth and get out of the city before the powers that be unleash the ultimate weapon of mass destruction on one of the most populated cities on the planet. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"I saw in another discussion, someone said that Cloverfield is a horror movie....maybe it is? [quote user="mercurial"] [quote user="elmonstro1982"] Im talking about films where you feel like your in the movie, like Blair Witch (which wasn't too good), American Zombie, Behind the Mask, and Cannibal Holocaust...films where the movie is from the view of the cameraman. A good example, (though it isn't horror) is Cloverfield, which I thought was directed geniously. [/quote] My favorite has to be Man Bites Dog followed by The Blair Witch Project (apparently I'm the only one that loves it). So what is Cloverfield if it's not horror? I thought it was pretty horrific. [/quote] " [More]

"It happens eventually to every filmmaker and actor associated with R-rated movies*, and now Eli Roth, the “torture porn auteur” who gave us Hostel and Hostel II, is making the transition to family-friendly fare — in order to make the kids happy, of course. No, it has nothing to do with the money, which comes more easily with younger-targeted, lower-rated releases (especially when your last movie disappoints). It has to do with the realization that kids don’t have enough movies made for them, and they’d apparently like to see what Eli Roth’s talent is like. Only, up until now, they haven’t been allowed. As Roth defends the move: “Everyone I know has been saying ‘When are you gonna do a movie my kids can see?’ And finally, I’m gonna make a movie that 13-year-old kids can see.” The movie, which Roth is still scripting, is described as being inspired by Cloverfield and Transformers, with all the “mass-destruction” and “chaos and pandemonium” that would entail. But it won’t be too scar ... " [More]

"We have less than three weeks until Iron Man opens in theaters, but the way people are talking about the film today, that might be too long. Regardless of how subversive the comic book adaptation may be (check out Paul’s thoughts from yesterday), or otherwise how intelligent a blockbuster it is (according to an exhibitor, quoted here by Anne Thompson), or how “pretty darn amazing!!!!!” it is to a more mainstream, don’t-care-if-it’s-intelligent -as-long-as-it’s-awesome crowd (such as includes those who send reactions to AICN), the fact of the matter is that we may have already accepted the movie as all these things well before even seeing the whole thing. The big, hairy guy from Ireland, Karl Hungus, sums up his feelings of saturation, sparked by this latest hero-becomes-familiar-with-his -powers clip, on his blog (via IMDb): The problem is, with all this cool stuff being flung at us, is there going to be any cool left to blow us away when the film finally hits? I know, this isn’t t ... " [More]

"In this week’s New York, David Edelstein lists a number of films that significantly represent the Big Apple. Because it’s a celebration of the magazine’s 40th anniversary, though, it only goes back as far as 1968 (the year of Planet of the Apes and Rosemary’s Baby). So, tragically no timely mention of The Naked City, which lost both its director and star recently. Edelstein claims to be upset about having to be exclusive, though he seems more concerned with the fact that there aren’t many recent films in the bunch (he asks if I Am Legend has cultural impact). There are a couple films from this decade cited, both of them bearing post-9/11 significance, though he glaringly avoids referencing Cloverfield. Even if he didn’t like the film — though I think he did — it would still be noteworthy. If not just for the sake of the subtext, at least for the fact that, in the last twenty years, the destruction of this city has been a huge part of its cinematic identity. New York even did a top ... "Uh-oh! Brian Singer’s Tom Cruise-tries-to-kill-Hitler-wi th-an-eye patch drama Valkyrie has been pushed from prestige season to dumping season. The already much-mocked film was previously pushed down the pipe from July to October 2008; with re-shoots still looming, it’ll now open in February 2009. Benderspink, the agency that packaged Juno, has a new gambit for luring teen girls to the multiplex: they’re producing “a hip-hop musical reimagining” of Jane Austen’s Emma. Cloverfield is a huge hit in Japan. This is the surest sign I can think of that global-political cycle of the 20th century is complete. Originally posted on:SpoutBlog » Karina Longworth " [More]

"I guess I will be seeing The Dark Knight no matter what, but this new video of “Rachel Dawes” (Maggie Gyllenhaal) endorsing “Harvey Dent” has me half-wanting to boycott the thing. While not entirely harmless, the clip is obnoxiously pointless, and it is written and acted poorly enough to feel like the opening of an SNL skit. I assume that Christopher Nolan didn’t have much to do with it, and I find viral marketing tactics like this to cheapen a film and do more harm than good. Who could watch this thing and honestly think it makes the Batman Begins sequel look appealing? Even if you’re smart enough to know the actual film won’t look like this, you might at least get the impression that Gyllenhaal’s performance here is a sampling of her portrayal of Dawes (previously played by Katie Holmes) in The Dark Knight. And no, I’m not biased against Gyllenhaal. I do think she’s highly overrated, but she’s a decent actress most of the time (when she has more air, apparently). However, I do a ... " [More]
