Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace.
Originally titled Stephen King's It, this two-part TV movie first aired on November 18 and 20, 1990. The story starts in Maine, where a small child is lured into the hands of what audiences everywhere can be assured is one mean clown. The 30-year struggle against an evil supernatural force that masquerades as a circus clown named Pennywise (Tim Curry) begins in 1960 and spans until 1990. Featured are a group of six young men and one young woman who call themselves "the lucky seven" and are the unfortunate targets of Pennywise from pre-adolescence into their mid-forties. The lucky seven emerge physically intact but emotionally scathed after their first battle with Pennywise -- who is a self-labeled "eater of worlds...and children." When Pennywise returns 30 years later, the seven are forced to remember their terrifying past and faced with the prospect of destroying him once and for all. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

"Oh, by far, it was watching Stephen King's IT on TV. After that, I never had the desire go to a circus, and clowns still scare the shit out of me...clowns and porcelain dolls. STOP LOOKING AT ME, YOU DOLLS! More importantly though, I think everyone, deep down, knows clowns are inhuman trollops ready to pounce on anyone who gives them attention, so isn't King (and the movie) just saying what we already know? "It is the summer of 1958 and young David (Daniel Manoche) meets Meg Loughlin (Blythe Auffarth), the new girl next door in Gregory Wilson's Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door. Meg's parents were killed in a car crash, and now Meg, and her sister Sharon (Madeline Taylor) are forced to live with Auntie Ruth Chandler (Blanche Baker) and her sadistic children including Wille (Graham Patrick Martin) and Donny (Benjamin Ross Kaplan). It is a summer that haunts David in his adult life. The film starts out as a coming of age story like Stand by Me or Stephen King's It. It develops in a different direction that is more unsettling. Meg is punished for every wrong thing and that builds until Meg is strung up to be tortured. It then becomes Saw and tries to make the audience blink. The acting is varied. Daniel Manoche's is good early with scenes of budding love, but loses character as he is forced to watch Meg's degradation. Blythe Auffarth's Meg suff ... " [More]

"Now, I have to say that I really enjoyed IT. I LOVE Tim Curry and he was just so freaky as Pennywise the Clown. I thought the ending was very stupid but I really enjoyed it when they went back in time as kids. I was watching the commentary on the movie and they were talking that MOST of the kids in the movie were spoiled rotten and had some major attitudes (more than the adults), I thought that was pretty interesting. It had some very good parts in it and there are some things in the book that I am GLAD they didn't show in the movie. The book had a part where they were children and they all wanted to find a way to feel closer to each other and each of the little boys had sex with the girl (or just brief entering and exiting...) it was a little to uncomfortable for me. Now if they were adults fine, but the kids... " [More]

"With the release of Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix, I am forced to listen to friends and co-workers and in some cases complete strangers bitch and moan. Indeed, even many reviews for the movie contain the same gripes, and that is that 'it was OK, but they shouldn't have left such-and-such out.' A more common complaint is the simpler, more direct 'it wasn't as good as the book.' This is unfortunate, because a perfectly fine movie is getting short shrift because of how well it stands up to a completely separate entity; the book. Time was when I would be right alongside these people, complaining about how the movie removed my favorite subplot, or didn't capture the essence of the characters as perfectly as I'd hoped. Nowadays I like to think I'm much more enlightened, and oddly enough I owe this all to the Harry Potter series.I was a bit late on the Harry Potter bandwagon, and Azkaban was the first movie I saw after reading all the book ... "For people who have an inate, childhood fear of 'orange hair' and 'red noses' and 'make-up' and 'goofy clothes' and 'big feet'... there is always Stephen King's "IT" ... Or, on a much sillier note, there is "Killer Clowns From Outer Space" (appearantly not listed on SPOUT) ... Or, the one that actually SCARED the HELL out of ME (!) , "Clown House" ... " [More]

"Yes, I'm a Stephen King fan too, I have read ALL his books and seen ALL of his movies. I agree with you both too, The Mist is one of my favorite stories, I could just envision everything so vividly and I could feel how terrified people were and I kept thinking, Oh I hope so and so is okay...Thomas Jane is an excellent choice for David. How cool, I hope it won't disappoint us. I think one of the WORST movies was the TommyKnockers (that is just my opinion), It's still entertaining to watch, but it just isn't very good. I enjoyed watching RoseRed, but it had some very stupid parts in it, as well as the Langoliers, a few really good interesting parts but the story is just a little lame. I have to say that I really like IT and of course the first Shining (even though Stephen King was not happy with it because they didn't take his suggestions about how he wanted it to be, that's why they released the later one because it followed his story the way he wanted ... Stephen King's much-maligned It TV miniseries might not be quite as horrible as it's generally considered to be, though the final 30 minutes is every bit as brutally stupid and lame as just about everyone recalls. If you can get past Richard Thomas' stomach-turning yuppie ponytail, much of the first few hours is pretty engaging, with such strong horror moments strewn throughout as bloody balloons, off-the-wall fortune cookies, and even a wolfman pop-up to keep the creepy momentum going. Sadly, the forward motion comes to a dead halt late in the third act, where the plot takes over and the screams stop. By the time the flashlight-stomached spider monster shows up at the end, the silly shock of it has already been tempered by a lackadaisical buildup. True, the book itself isn't known for the strongest ending, but considering the time audiences already invested in the miniseries, the televised product tends to have a much more immediate visceral letdown. The acting is a hodgepodge affair that stacks up for the most part with only a few miscasts to slow the sucker down (again, John Boy anyone?). Of course, the crown of the series is owned by Tim Curry, whose playful menace as Pennywise scarred countless clown-fearers through the years. Leaps and bounds above The Stand miniseries that followed this one, It remains a miniseries event that pushed the boundaries of the medium thanks to its love of blood, clown-dog demons, and overall endangerment of children -- certainly a match made in televised heaven that even the King would enjoy! ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
