"When a movie comes along in a tired genre, say the romantic comedy for instance, it´s too much to expect the story to bring us something new. After all, according to convention, we know how the main character, usually a heroine, is going to end up with the right guy for her. We know him from all the other males by excessive screen time and an adversarial relationship with the heroine. They find their way towards one another through the film; some sort of manufactured drama comes between them before the eventual happy ending. Almost without fail, this is how romantic comedies run. Shockingly, "27 Dresses" doesn´t deviate from the formula, yet feels fresh, thanks mostly to Katherine Heigl and James Marsden. Jane (Heigl) has a problem: she can´t say no to her friends on their wedding days. She ends up planning the wedding, being a bridesmaid, taste testing cakes, going to fittings and procuring invitations, among other duties. By day, she is an executive assistant a ... " [More]

"This movie has all the predictability of any chick flick, it's cheesy, unrealistic, and has the super super happy ending. At about 7 minutes into this movie I thought to my self that I would hate this movie. The plot of this movie is the same recycled plot found in most chick flicks, it reminded me a lot of how to lose a guy in 10 days. The main Character Jane Nichols and the guy who liked her both have similar jobs, and the guy has no reason to like her, she shows no interest, and he continually pursues her. The one thing this movie did have going for it however was it didn't have Kate Hudson or Matthew McConaughey who together make me want to sick a fork into my eye. The movie saved it self from complete retardation by adding an interesting twist, the guy who Jane is in love with, loves Jane's younger sister, and the situations which came to be where quite enjoyable to watch. The frustration and goofiness of Jane as her little sister a dumb blond ruins her life as she knows it. I ... " [More]

"Always a bridesmaid and never a bride, Katherine Heigl shines as the self-effacing best friend to everyone that reaches her boiling point when her younger sister steals the love of her life. Looking for an exploitative hot story, James Marsden finds it in Heigl and her collection of heinously ugly bridesmaids dresses, but alas, romance blossoms and the fun begins. Far from perfect but not a complete failure, 27 Dresses manages to combine the two key elements necessary for a modern romantic comedy: fresh slapstick and two lead actors that just seem to mesh. "This being a federal holiday and all, I figured there wouldn’t be much to report on from the trades. However, I was very, very wrong. Check out this doozy of an announcement: Oliver Stone is to direct a biopic about George W. Bush, which will be titled Bush and star Josh Brolin in the lead. Obviously, Stone had thought he was making a biopic about America’s worst President twelve years ago with Nixon, but then of course came along Bush the Second. And since he used an actor (Anthony Hopkins) for that film who looked nothing like the subject, this time he’s doing to the same. I only hope that James Brolin gets to play George H.W. Bush. The boys won the box office battle of the sexes as Cloverfield opened with $41 million, the best weekend bow ever for January. That’s almost as much money as Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla debuted with ten years ago. The difference is that it cost $130 million to make while Cloverfield cost only $25 million. And yet with all the crap given to the monster ... " [More]

"Certainly the biggest news of the past 24 hours is the DGA’s three-year deal with the AMPTP, which could hopefully lead to a similar deal for the WGA, thereby ending the writer’s strike. It wasn’t that surprising, though, considering directors are used to walking in and not only finishing up but also taking the most credit for something begun by writers. I’m not actually sure if any of the DGA’s deal was based on outlines first made by the WGA, but a lot of times in Hollywood the writer’s original work is unrecognizable in the end product. Anne Thompson has the WGA’s statement regarding the DGA agreement here. Meanwhile the writer’s strike is affecting the UK. Look for the British to retaliate by ensuring Atonement wins every one of the BAFTA awards (including Best Animated Film). Imagine how hard-hit Hollywood will be without the ability to market their films with “BAFTA Winner” plastered on posters and in TV ads. Meanwhile the writer’s strike is also affecting Australia, which is ... " [More]
