Helvetica is a feature-length documentary about typography, graphic design and global visual culture that looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.

"Yeah out of all of those I have seen (Blade Runner, Helvetica, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dirty Harry, Kung Fu Hustle, and A Clockwork Orange) I liked all of them. Makes me think I should watch all of the movies you dislike![/quote] Yes you and most movie critics. One movie I am confidant no one will disagreeon with me is The Condemned which was a worthless pile of crap. " [More]

"HelveticaThis documentary manages to be both specific and very broad. By following the history of this seminal typeface we also get a history of modern visual design in general. What are people striving for in design? What is the relationship between function and art? Where were have we come from, and where are we now? What are we reacting against? Is there a reason to react or has perfection been achieved?Although there is historical information presented here along with other facts (you can recognize how different graphic design was before Helvetica), this is mostly a documentary about people and different personalities. We get to hear the opinions of different visual designers. You can see how their opinions about Helvetica and other aspects of visual design reflect their personalities and attitudes.Although I did not find this to be too profound, it is a fantastic documentary for what it is. And when you finish watching this movie, you will be noticing Helvetica all ar ... " [More]

"Helvetica is a documentary about a type face. Now alone that sounds extremely boring but some videos on typography are very interesting. This one however was not. There were some extremely boring/stupid interviews. The movie concentrates on how great this one font is rather than how important typography is, how long its been around, various methods of doing it, etc. Did I mention some of the things interviewees said where just incredibly stupid? In conclusion the movie was 1 1/2 hours about how great this one type face is. " [More]

"This movie exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a bit more of a dry documentary (e.g. An Inconvenient Truth), but was pleasantly surprised. This look at possibly the most important typeface in the modern world really opens your eyes to its ubiquitous presence. You leave the theater saying to yourself "That's Helvetica, that's Helvetica, and that too!" as you look at signs, magazines, posters, and even products. It was also very interesting to learn the 50 year history of the typeface and the logic behind it's creation. The only problem I noticed was with the titles that appeared throughout the film. On a few notable occasions the titles would appear white on a very bright background or black on a dark background. In one occasion, during an interview, a title appeared saying "[product] logo created by [person]" in black on a dark background for about two seconds. I apologize for not remembering the product or the person credited in the title, but it was cl ... " [More]

"Here's a film I want to see. It's hard to explain the importance of Helvetica if your not a graphic designer. Suffice it to say that before it ruled on emergency signs and bathroom doors, it was (and still is) a kind of movement, a philosophy. Read more here. The film highlights many design heros: Massimo Vignelli, New York David Carson, Portland Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones, New York Matthew Carter, Boston Michael Bierut, New York Lars Müller, London Paula Scher, New York Stefan Sagmeister, New York Michael C. Place of Build, London Eric Spiekermann, Berlin Wim Crouwel, Amsterdam Otmar Hoefer in the Linotype archives, Germany Neville Brody, London Danny van den Dungen of Experimental Jetset, Amsterdam Hermann Zapf, Germany Manuel Krebs and Dimitri Bruni of Norm, Zurich Leslie Savan, New York " [More]
