"The latest flick in the Mummy franchise sees the return of Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell but takes us away from pre-war Egypt and relocates the action to China in 1947. If the idea was to refresh a franchise that would be best located on the scrapheap it didn't work and this could well be the picture that kills the series. The story, such as it is, concerns Emperor Han (Jet Li) who is having a whale of a time conquering and pillaging and so forth. Concerned that he will never be able to complete his "great work" he decides to seek out the secret to eternal life. He enlists the help of witch Zi Yuan (Michelle Yeoh) who tricks the Emperor, cursing him and his army by turning them into stone. Cut forward to the present day where the curse could be (and inevitably, is) undone, unleashing an almost-immortal warlord and his army upon the world. It is, predictably, a race against time to prevent the Emperor from completing the process that will give him immortality and to destroy his a ... " [More]

"During a climactic battle scene in “The Mummy: Curse of the Tomb of the Something or Other,” Brender Fraser's charactrer, What's His Name, bellows: “I really hate mummies.”(At least, I'm pretty sure he said, “mummies,” as there was nothing prior to this that would suggest he said “mommies,” as there was no strained parental issues of his discussed in this film.) Regardless, I could not agree agree more, Brenden. “The Mummy” is not so much a film as it is a marathon for the senses, testing the threshold your eyes and ears can endure. When it's not busy reminding you of earlier, far better films, it's pounding your peepers and pummeling your drums into submission. It's difficult to look past its flaws, for the mere conception of this film is one – a story as lifeless and dry as an empty sarcophagus, this third “Mummy” can't even muster enough credibility to pass its non-computer-generated cast as be ... "With its hybrid cast of Asian action stars and non-threatening all-Americans, if the third Mummy movie hadn’t performed well internationally it would have been perceived as a disaster. But domestically, the long-gestating sequel played as an also-ran to the still-stunning Dark Knight. The Batman movie is now about two-thirds of the way to matching Titanic’s domestic box office high water mark. Art Linson will produce and music video director Floria Sigismondi will direct a biopic on The Runaways, the 70s-etta all-girl punk-esque band that launched the career of Joan Jett. Jett will executive produce. SAG and the AMPTP are still talking. Still, no one cares. Originally posted on:SpoutBlog » Karina Longworth " [More]

"WASHINGTON, July 31 (Xinhua) — U.S. President George W. Bush said Wednesday that U.S.-China relations are good and important, and he is “honored” to be invited to attend the Beijing premiere of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, a new Jet Li/Brendan Fraser fantasy film. “The fact that both countries are honoring the 30th anniversary of the relationship is a statement about good relations,” he told reporters from China, South Korea and Thailand at the White House ahead of his upcoming trip to the three countries. Also, the fact that both China and the United States are opening new Magic Johnson Theaters in each other’s capitals is “a signal of how important the relationship is,” Bush added. Bush said that during his stay in Beijing, he would wear period costumes featured in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, together with his father, former U.S. President George H.W. Bush. “Isn’t that interesting, two new east-west hybrid adventure films open the same year, obviously to cel ... " [More]

"Can that Mummy movie, an obvious, impersonal cash-in on the growing international market, perform competitively with The Dark Knight at the box office this weekend? Maybe! Can that Swing Vote movie, Kevin Costner’s labor of love which he paid for with his own money? Probably not! The release of Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has been pushed back from June 2009 to Memorial Day 2010, ostensibly to allow more time for post-production, but maybe also to allow for more clever counter-programming against Transformers 2. Chris Millis has sold the film rights to his as-yet-unpublished novel God and California to Lionsgate. The book, which he’ll adapt himself, focuses on “an Iraq war vet and a disgraced Catholic priest who travel from Gotham to California in a pink 1975 El Dorado in a week, breaking the Ten Commandments one by one.” Originally posted on:[More]

"The third part in Universal’s rebooted Mummy franchise takes the series in a new direction. Rather than set in Egypt and dealing again with the same old villain, Imhotep, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor brings us to China and gives us a different sort of preserved corpse baddie. And it looks like the change could actually add some freshness to the franchise. Of course, history would hint that such a move for the Mummy movies is a bad idea. While it seems beneficial in theory to redirect the focus of a series with the third installment, especially if the first sequel was too much a repetition of the original (a la The Mummy Returns), in practice many threequels mistakenly alter things for the worse. These aren’t necessarily the worst threequels ever made (*cough* [More]

They just lost my ticket.” 3:50 - Here comes everyone from The Mummy, including Maria Bello, John Hannah, Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, and Jet Li.
