"
Hey Ris, I've been thinking about this and had started making the majority of these films, but I think its best if they're discussed in the context of the DVD on which they appear (linking to that film). I think this would give people a more accurate picture of the entire contents of a DVD instead of creating seperate films for each mini-film contained within a particular DVD, in the same way we discuss short films. Let me know your thoughts on this. Cheers, Xavier
Well all of these entries would be feature length, not short films. Whenever I see something that is feature length, I rate it and list it here and on other movie sites. Yes many of these are found on DVDs as "special features" for another movie, but many of them were also produced and shown completely separately at different times, but just happened to be bundled with some movie because they seemed relevent when making the DVD. I have found many other films that are feature length doc ... " [More]

"
Here's another round of movies to add. I mentioned a few of these previously, but they weren't added. A lot of them are "making of" movies I've seen on DVDs. Let me know if there's a reason they can't be added. Kenji Mizoguchi: The Life of a Film Director (1975) Great Escape: The Untold Story (2001) (TV) James Dean Remembered (1974) (TV) Making 'The New World' (2006) (V) A Message from Akira Kurosawa: For Beautiful Movies (2000) (V) Sam Peckinpah: Man of Iron (1992) (TV) The Thing: Terror Takes Shape (1998) (V) Trapped in the Closet: Chapters 1-12 (2005) (V) The True Meaning of Christmas Specials (2002) (TV) The TV Wheel (1995) (TV) Welcome to Sherwood! The Story of 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (2003) (V)
Hey Ris, I've been thinking about this and had started making the majority of these films, but I think its best if they're discussed in the context of the DVD on which they appear (linking to that film). "There was a stretch a couple years ago when I was a bit more interested in exploring the world of short films. I had rented several DVDs in the series simply called "Short" released around 2000, primarily because it was the only DVD I knew of that had La Jetée on it. Anyways I find that short films can rarely achieve the kind of lasting effect that is usually more possible for feature length films. However it is a different art form in a ways, and has it's own separate challenges and benefits that I'm interested in exploring.Spout sent me a collection called Shorts! Volume 1. The result was pretty much what I expected. A fair mix of the good and the bad. Maybe a bit better than what I expected now that I think about it. I think the main problem most short films make is trying to tell a story in anywhere near the same way a feature film would. You can't expect to achieve meaning in a short film with the same methods used in a feature film because ... " [More]

"Why make a short film? There can be many valid reasons: not enough funds for a full length feature; more room for experimental filmmaking techniques without the potential for full length fluff; or, most commonly, the filmmaker wants to strongly convey a single idea in a more direct (a.k.a. shorter) format. While shorter doesn’t always mean better. Those behind these films often use/abuse the medium to wax philosophical, cramming far too much into a matter of minutes and leaving viewers cut off with choppy endings. The technical experimentation alluded to above can result in visual awe, but often the storytelling aspects are greatly lacking. The running time may be considerably truncated, but the basic components of successful film language still must be present. The prospect of viewing 15 award-winning shorts from various celebrated festivals (including Sundance and Tribeca) was largely appealing, especially considering my excellent track record with the medium. Admittedly ... " [More]
