Directed by Jim McBride.
A film that captures the steamy, colorful essence of New Orleans, this crime thriller tells the romantic story of a classy detective whose investigation of a gangland murder lands him in trouble with the city's new District Attorney, a woman with a rigid penchant for following the letter of the law. Despite their differences, the two manage to work together and eventually fall in love. Unfortunately all of this leads them to have to fight for their lives when their investigation into the case and the corruption surrounding it gets them bumped up to the top of a hit man's list. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

"The Erotic Thriller: a genre extinct? The 1980s and 90s seemingly had multitudes of film execs sitting around bistro tables drinking wine spritzers and snorting lines, coming up with new ways to simultaneously skeeve-out and stimulate the Film-Going American Public. Are those grand days over? Perhaps…but fear not....much like a weathered porno mag found in the woods behind your parents’ house, that’s what cheap used videos are for: learning and reminiscing. And now, to fill your empty, cavernous need, a triple play, a ménage a trois if you will, of sex thrillers, all complete with cringe-worthy sex romps that will leave you feeling just a little bit creepy inside. Nothing illegal, not even porno, just something that is a little bit….off. Strap yourself in for a wild night of semi-deviant sex scenes featuring bizarrely matched and mostly unattractive celebs. The Films: Dressed to Kill, Presumed Innocent, The Big Easy Viewing order importance: It matters not. With enough local flavor to have been sponsored by the New Orleans' tourist board, a sharp script by Beverly Hills Cop scribe Daniel Petrie Jr., and terrific leads in Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin, The Big Easy represented the best the '80s had to offer in terms of action thrillers. Quaid and Barkin have fantastic chemistry both as antagonists and as romantic partners and the considerably different performances given by each are the fuel that drives the film. Skirting, but never crossing into Cajun caricature, Quaid has never been better, emphasizing his good-natured cop's gleeful corruption but humanizing him enough so that his late-film moral crisis never seems out of line. It's a sharp, but perfect, contrast to Barkin's smoldering introvert. Their film-length coitus interruptus has all the tension that the otherwise familiar drugs-and-guns plot lacks. The colorful setting and memorable supporting characters further help offset this, particularly Ned Beatty as Quaid's mentor. Jim McBride directs with a breezy charm that keeps his film entertaining up to its inevitable, and thankfully brief, shoot-out finale. ~ Keith Phipps, All Movie Guide
