Synopsis
Not only does
Louise Glaum
perform a seductive "Spider Dance" in this provocatively titled but deeply moralistic melodrama, she also hosts gay parties where stage-door johnnies drink out of women's slippers and scantily clad chorines slide down banisters, their undergarments visible to all and sundry. Glaum's Adrienne Reunault, the star of the frivolity, "New York's Gayest Midnight Frolic," keeps her very own stage-door johnny, millionaire Philip Overman (
William Conklin
), whose wife (Myrtle Steadman) has hired a private detective to keep track of her wayward husband's affairs. While Adrienne and her young protégée Daisy (Peggy Pearce) are enjoying breakfast -- at 2pm of course -- Mrs. Overman arrives to confront her rival. Mr. Overman, unfortunately, also appears on the scene and his "but you misunderstand, dear" attitude is hardly convincing. As a result, Mrs. Overman obtains a divorce. Adrienne, meanwhile, is swept off her feet by Philadelphia millionaire Dick Wallace (
Irving Cummings
) and agrees to marry him -- only for the story to repeat itself, this time with Adrienne as the betrayed wife and Daisy the usurper. The dejected former femme fatale sails to Europe on the same liner as the reunited Overmans, who are on their second honeymoon. This time, however, Adrienne does nothing to disrupt the relationship, resigned instead to lead a life in contemplative solitude. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide
