Directed by Don Bluth
Frustrated with the Walt Disney studio's reluctance to produce full-length animated films, Don Bluth and a number of animators left the studio in the early '80s with the intent of creating movies in the style of Disney's classics. The Secret of NIMH is the first film Bluth produced after leaving the studio. Adapted from Robert C. O'Brien's acclaimed children's book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H., the film is about a widowed mouse whose home is threatened; also, one of her children is gravely ill. On her way to find help, she discovers NIMH, a secret society of highly-intelligent rats who have escaped from a nearby science lab. The rats help the widow to protect her family and home. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide

"Having been a HUGE fan of Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, I love the look and feel of this film - Don Bluth's films have a better, darker look than some of the Disney films produced around this time. I wish the film were longer, because it is one of my favorites of all time, or as I like to call them, "comfort" movies. It may possibly be too scary for very small children, so watch out for that, but otherwise, a great family movie all around. " [More]

"1. Superman 3- I didn't think that would end up being a common fear but yeah the machine swallowing the old woman and making her freaky about did me in. 2.Willy Wonka- The nervous breakdown on the boat- too out of left field. Thats when I figured Willy was messing with stuff I didn't want to know about. 3. Evil Dead 2- I watched it when I was 11or 12 because at that point I thought I was impervious, but the laughing deer head got me bad. 4.Mr. Boogedy (sp) " [More]

"[quote user="leeroy711"] Well now, along those same lines, you can't forget a film by one of my favorite directors. Jim Sheridan's My Left Foot was incredible. It's based on Christy Brown's (who spent his first years hidden from his ashamed and confused family in a crawl-space) autobiography. If you're in the mood for a tearjerker that's simultaneously triumphant and inspiring............ there you go. Writer-director Don Bluth was the main alternative to Disney in animated feature films of the 1980s. Frustrated with what he saw as Disney's lackluster products and slow pace, Bluth took a group of animators with him to establish an independent company. Their first effort was The Secret of NIMH, about a mouse who has lost her husband and hooks up with a pack of super-intelligent rats who've escaped from an experimental laboratory. The smart rodents help her and her family survive a perilous journey. Though it breaks no new ground technically, the highly professional animation is richly detailed, partially compensating for a plot that sags at times. The success of The Secret of NIMH enabled Bluth to establish his own cartoon-making machine, which, a few years later, would produce such fine family fare as An American Tail and The Land Before Time. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide
