"(this review was first published at www.thecinematheque.com on 4/1/07) From the very first moment, as the Warner Bros. logo flashes and slashes its way across the darkened screen, as if forged by mighty Hephaestus himself, we instantly know that Zack Snyder and his X-Box-weened posse of computer geeks, graphic novel junkees and comic book fanboys are about to mightily thrust upon the unsuspecting public a vast and mighty display of ultrasupercoolawesomeness to the very freakin' tippy-top apex-eroding grody-to-the-max. Of course, for those of us who are not brought to the very precipice (or beyond) of orgasm by the thought of a CGI-created universe full of rabid bare-chested oiled-up steroid-pumped half-men half-beast warriors led by a pompous half-man half-pariah (all bad actor) who is just one note (and a lot less work-outs) away from a certain White House residing war monger of our own, fighting an equally rabid über-army of glimmer-masked maurauders, gigantic Frankensteinia ... "After quite a few Oscar films, artsy independent flicks, and American Film Institute-lauded classic films, the next few entries on my Netflix queue will be a welcome combination of lowbrow comedies and popcorn flicks. Hey, I am a movie fan, which means I like to watch all kinds of movies. Truthfully, I probably would not have been interested in 300 had not a few friends (all guys) told me that this was a great film. I was skeptical. I mean, I could already tell it was a movie ripe for mass merchandising when it first came out, not to mention the fact that I thought one would need a certain amount of testosterone to enjoy the film. Yet, with the few friends singing its praises, I popped it on my queue. Unfortunately, my predictions were correct (and see if I listen to them again). Now, just so's y'all know, I have nothing but respect for the concept here, but it was clearly a film made more for entertainment than art, so certain expectations need automatically be revised and ... "

"We were invited to a Warner Bros. event tonight to see 26 minutes worth of footage from the Watchmen film that’s due out on 03.06.09 next year, and it was pretty impressive stuff. Even the ice cold comic book fan inside of me enjoyed it, and I didn’t think The Dark Knight was worth all the hype everyone was laying on it. As far as a graphic novel turned into a film goes, Watchmen looks like it’ll set the bar for future adaptations. Director Zack Snyder was on-hand to setup the footage and talk about what’s been done so far, and he was joined by costume designer Michael Wilkinson and production designer Alex McDowell. Interestingly enough, it took place in the same place where they held a similar event for 300. "When the trailer for Watchmen hit the web a few weeks ago, I was as pumped as anyone. I’ve always been a fan of comics, but when I finished reading Alan Moore’s opus for the first time, I closed the back cover, starred into space, and solemnly said, “This changes everything.” Seriously, it’s that good. And the trailer looks good, it appears to be a faithful adaptation of the source material. The key word here is appears. The visuals are stunning, some sites even took the time to do shot by shot comparisons with the book. But I’m not worried at all about that, I’m more concerned with how the film will be edited. Like most comics/graphic novels, Watchmen is practically a story board waiting to be transformed into a film. But what made the book so revolutionary was not the art, it was the story, and the way the story was told. Watchmen is a dense web of complicated interconnected stories. Multiple generations of characters deal with epic personal, philosophical, and political struggle ... "

"3:55 - Kicking the fans while they’re down: Well, that’s all the time they have. The poor folks who waited in line to ask questions got nada. The end. 3:54 - The Spirit clip #3: They’re introducing yet another clip. Wow, I feel like we’ll get to see the whole movie in bits and pieces. Still talking… please just roll ‘em. Miller: “Folks, here you go. When Titans clash.” The Octopus and The Spirit duking it out in an extremely muddy and watery set. The Spirit gets clocked in the head with a cinder block and quips “You’re giving me a headache, Octopus.” Jackson then gives The Spirit a crotchshot with a massive steel wrench. The Spirit then pounds The Octopus deep into the mud with punch after punch after punch. Literally, like 20 punches. Then The Octopus appears behind The Spirit and crashes a toilet down on The Spirit’s head, pinning his arms in place with the toilet seat. He laughs his ass off (whoops, bad pun) and yells “Come on! Toilets are always funny!” I think that clip just p ... "

"The Dark Knight I’m finally writing about The Dark Knight. So much has been blogged about this movie since years before it came out, to the massive avalanche of advertising well before the release date of the film, through the record breaking box office attendance, and still in its aftermath and upcoming award season. It’s kind of overwhelming, and I’m not sure I have anything new to say for anyone who really cares about the movie at all. Yeah Heath stole the show. It’s sad that he’s dead since it seemed like there wasn’t much resolution for the Joker character and they were probably originally intending on bringing him back in a sequel. But apart from the Heath’s performance, the rest of the film wasn’t much more impressive to me than Batman Begins which did not blow me out of the water the way it did for many people. But I never expected it to. Christopher Nolan’s take on the world of Batman is a very realistic one. It w ... "

"I never knew it was so easy to add lightsaber effects to any YouTube clip. Earlier this week, when I wrote about the new Clone Wars lightsaber game for the Nintendo Wii, I saw it done with the infamous “Star Wars Kid” video (see it here). And now, thanks again to Fark.com, I see it done with a clip from The Princess Bride (above). "An orgasm for the eyes. That was the first thought that ran through my head once the end credits of "300" started running. The movie, about the legendary Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC in which a group of 300 Spartans held off an invading army of Persians for three days, employs the same green/blue screen techniques to create its sweeping vistas and battle scenes as did 2005´s "Sin City" and has something for everyone…except, possibly, a complex plot. This is as straight forward a story as there is: King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) takes a small group of 300 Spartans to hold off an invading force of Persians against the wishes-and laws-of his city. Apparently, every ruler of Sparta must get the approval from a group of Oracles before he makes any major decision. Leonidas is told in a scene seemingly out of the depths of the subconscious, that no army will be authorized to oppose the God King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). "Perhaps my review may be dismissed automatically by the fact that I have not revisited Narnia myself since reading them as a child, and even then, the C. S. Lewis books had none of the mental shelf life of “The Lord of the Rings” tomes or Jack London’s excursions into the wild. I approached “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” from a merely cinematic perspective. And, despite its battles and bluster, it’s rather a bore. That’s not to say it does not try to get medieval on your a** -- various armor-clanging clashes punctuate the numerous slow spots of exposition in the picture, vying for credibility in the rather noisy summer blockbuster period. "For more than a year, I've done my best to avoid seeing "300." From the first time I saw its TV spot, Zach Snyder's movie gave me unavoidable unappealing vibes. They were the same vibes I get after seeing spliced highlights of a Jet Li or Jason Statham movie...or "War," the Li-Statham movie. The guaranteed superfluous action and skimpy screenplay would probably be fun, but with so many other titles available, such releases fall into oblivion, possibly to be passed over in the grocery store bargain bin 6 years down the road. I love graphic novels and I love graphic novels by "300" creator Frank Miller + their adapted films ("Sin City"), so what was it that convinced me to see this loud, dumb, overhyped movie? A graphic novel. Alan Moore's "Watchmen" is a towering achievement in the illustrated genre. The story of retired superheroes lured back into caped action is the most layered graphic novel I've experienced, and though I prefer Art Spiegelman's "Maus," Moore's work takes spandex ... "
