Directed by Robert Wise.
Steve McQueen received his only Academy Award nomination for his performance in this epic-scale war drama, based on the novel by Richard McKenna. In 1926, as China teeters on the edge of political revolution in the midst of a civil war, an American battle ship, the USS San Pablo, is ordered to patrol the Yangtze River to represent and protect American interests. While the San Pablo may be an American ship, much of the labor is actually performed by Chinese locals willing to work for American money, while stern but inexperienced commanding officer Captain Collins (Richard Crenna) frequently drills his charges, unsure what else to do. A machinist's mate with just under a decade of navy service behind him, Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) is assigned to the San Pablo and immediately makes enemies among the crew -- he prefers to do his own work rather than farm it out to others, and the one Chinese man who works by his side, Po Han (Mako), is treated as an apprentice rather than a servant. Holman also falls in love with an idealistic American missionary (Candice Bergen), while his shipmate Frenchy (Richard Attenborough) falls for a Chinese girl and - with marriage plans in mind - kidnaps her to prevent her from being auctioned off. As Holman's methods and attitudes continue to anger his comrades, they find themselves increasingly at odds with the Chinese, especially after Frenchy's girlfriend becomes pregnant and Po Han is captured by revolutionary forces and branded a traitor. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"I had never seen THE SAND PEBBLES until the other night but based on the era and the type of work Robert Wise has done over the years I had a good idea of what to expect. The movie is long and expertly filmed but Robert Wise will never be known as a director that inspires a cult-like fan base. THE SAND PEBBLES unfolds at a deceptively slow, even stately pace. It feels very professional in its execution. The balance between intimate character driven moments and large scale sociopolitical and battle moments give the film the feeling of many early wide screen epics. McQueen plays a troubled outsider who is both a loser and hero in sheep's clothing. The film ultimately gives you what you'd expect from McQueen but via the style of Wise. Nothing is over the top. It is all layed out for you in slow, clean, well measured strokes. It is rich and satisfying while lacking the emotional punch you might want from such a dark, politically charged epic. This is not to belittle t ... " [More]

"The Sand Pebbles is one of those unconventional war movies that deserves far more recognition than it gets. Both for the performances and the matter that it treats. The eight Academy award nominations are well deserved, that it did not win any of them is very much undeserved.Once again, Steve McQueen turned out a brilliant acting job. A cool, quiet unassuming navy engineer with more backbone than any other sailor on the ship. If there's three things Steve played well in his career, its characters that are cool and quiet, characters with a lot of backbone, and making all those cool, quiet, steely characters unique. And it's not just Steve that pulled off a great performance in this one. In this film we get the shining performances from the supporting cast. In particular, we get to see a young Candice Bergen shine as the love interest. It's a good reminder that she was a talented actress prior to her career of poking fun at Dan Quayle. And the historical matter is quite intere ... " [More]

The Sand Pebbles is a lengthy but engaging mix of romance, historical epic, political commentary, and adventure. Three years after his star-making turn in The Great Escape, Steve McQueen delivers what many consider his most complete performance, as the antisocial crewmember of an American ship docked in China during the civil war of 1926. Though it presents a rather generalized view of imperialism, Sand Pebbles makes obvious parallels between America's presence in China and its presence in Vietnam four decades later. Director Robert Wise struggled to get backing for the film, succeeding only when he agreed to direct the film version of The Sound of Music. It was not a major hit, though its cachet increased when it received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor. ~ Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide
