Directed by John Carney.
A Dublin-based busker and vacuum-cleaner repairman enter into a fruitful relationship with a piano playing florist in a toe-tapping "video album" directed by John Carney and featuring a cast comprised entirely of professional musicians. He (Glen Hansard of The Frames) was a six-stringed street musician. She (Marketa Irglova) was a flower woman who can't afford to purchase a piano of her own. One day, after admiring the musician's songs and asking if he would take a look at her broken vacuum, the flower-pushing piano player discovered that she shared a remarkable sonic rapport with the mechanically savvy guitarist. Their musical sensibilities quickly converging to striking effect, the talented pair soon determines to record an album together. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"I felt mostly comfortable watching this movie, that I felt I was a little sibling, wishing I got a quarter every time someone said the f-word, (cha-ching!) , and following the characters around with my video camera. Big brothers and big sisters always ignore little sibling tag-alongs. The music was very nice. In fact, I was going through Circuit City's soundtrack section when I saw "Once." I didn't get it because I never saw the movie. So I looked for the movie and WOW. Expensive! Finally after thinking it over for a few months, I gave in. I enjoyed the storyline of the movie but still don't know why that "Old World" of people have to cuss so much. I guess they're a bunch of Fornicators Under Consent of King -ers. My British friend said it's a way of life now, to profane everything casually. " [More]

"Once is the kind of movie that only comes along once (no pun intended) in a great while. It is a deeply moving and original film, shot on a near non-existent budget that defies easy classification. Ostensibly, it's a musical, but it's shot in a neo-realist style. It is also a drama, and almost a romance. It is has the best songs for any film musical since Evita and is certainly one of the best films I've seen this year. Set on the streets of Dublin, the movie follows an unnamed street busker who I'll call the guy, which is how the character is referred to in the closing credits. He is played by Glen Hansard of The Frames, who also wrote the songs (Trivia: the part was almost played by Cillian Murphy, who dropped out because he found Hansard's songs too difficult to sing). The guy works by day as a vacuum cleaner repairman, but his real passion is music. One of the few people who pay any attention to his street performances is a girl (Markéta Irglová ... " [More]

"August Rush = totally lame. Saccharine sweet, poorly acted, cheesy dialogue. I kept groaning almost anytime someone opened their mouth. The kid, Freddie Highmore ("The Spiderwick Chronicles"), is trying to find his parents who don't even know he exists. They just had one really great night together and just "feel" that someone is out there. Almost every single movie cliche exists in this film. Avoid. Avoid. Young Guns II is not a real improvement on the first film. Everyone who made it alive out of the first movie is back and they brought some friends. Viggo Mortensen ("Eastern Promises") and Gil Grissom (William Peterson) take a bow. This time the story is told in flashback with Emilio Estevez ("Bobby") as a really unconvincing old Billy the Kid trying to get a pardon for his past crimes. His young Billy is equally fake, only now, instead of the steely glare, he's got the maniacal laughter. Lame and disappointing. But Keifer still ... " [More]

"Despite the several recommendations I had to watch this movie, I was genuinely impressed. It was way bigger and better than I imagined. A true modern day musical where people don't break into song on the street but rather sing along to their cd player while walking down the street. The soundtrack truly made this movie worthwhile. I loved it. " [More]

"Well, I just checked out the list of movies nominated for Academy Awards, and my feelings on the films nominated are a bit mixed. On the plus side, this will be the first year that I've seen a lot of the films nominated. I'm just about overjoyed that "Juno" and "There Will Be Blood" were nominated for Best Picture, since both are amazing movies. Johnny Depp got nominated for "Sweeney Todd," a movie which picked up a few other good nominations. I personally think the other movies in the Best Costume category don't stand a chance.I'm also excited about "Persepolis" getting nominated for best animated film (I've not seen the movie, but I loved the graphic novel series), and "Once" being nominated for best original song. If "Falling Slowly" wins, it will be the best thing to happen to Glen Hansard since The Frames started recording. I would love nothing more than to see this rocket him and the band to the f ... "10/10 people. I was not expecting to be blown away by anything with a Sundance seal of approval. More often than not, Sundance endorsements are about quirky people patting other quirky people on the back and telling the rest of us we're idiots for liking Terminator. I do have an artsy fartsy streak, and I admit I'm a sucker for music-oriented films. Hell, I love That Thing You Do! How many grown men admit that?! Once feels like real time. It has a deliberately slow pace allowing the music and lyrics to tell a lot of the story. (not too slow -- it's not even 90 minutes) And please, fellow rockers, don't panic at the cover. Sure this is singer-songwriter territory. I have Lars Ulrich on my desktop wallpaper, ok? Some Kind of Monster is a work of genius. But this music is flat out good. I mean really, really good.Boy meets girl, boy very fond of girl. Both are lonely and at crossroads in their lives. Both are trying to determine if they're reboundin ... " [More]

It would be easy to crush John Carney's warm-hearted Once with overpraise. It is a very small, very simple, immensely likeable movie that earns an audience's goodwill early thanks to a very winning performance by Glen Hansard. The film opens with scenes of the man earning money as a street singer, and his singing voice, as well as his sympathy for an addict who tries to rob him, make him an instantly engaging character. Thanks to a textbook "meet cute" involving a broken appliance, he makes the acquaintance of a woman (Markéta Irglová) who eventually becomes his collaborator on a series of songs and recordings that will help both of them realize their personal goals. The songs they create together are the center of the film, and tonally they fit the movie perfectly. They are very pretty, with simple repetitive declarations of emotion, although they lack real hooks -- they are like an earthier version of Damien Rice songs. The movie does not build to a false climax. There is no buildup to a gig that will break them into the big time, and although this is a love story, the movie does not hinge on a "will they or won't they get together" template that would drive most films like this. The simple ending provides a gentle poetic touch that underscores how well these two characters know each other, and what they have given to each other during their brief time together. Once is simply a straightforward account of a couple of weeks in these people's lives, a period of time they will only have once. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
