Scary Movie screenwriters Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer join forces to parody the "biggest" movies ever to hit the silver screen in this comedy that gives such popular box-office hits as Pirates of the Caribbean and Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe the same treatment that Scary Movie gave to the slasher subgenre. A virtual smorgasbord of spoof, Epic Movie tells the tale of four fully grown orphans: one the victim of snakes that attacked her plane, another raised by a kindly Louvre curator, the third a Mexican "libre" wrestling refuge, and the last an average mutant from an "X"-community. When the curious quartet visits a sprawling chocolate factory, they stumble across a magical wardrobe which transports them to the enchanted land of Gnarnia. It seems that the wondrous fantasy land has recently fallen under the spell of the evil White Bitch (Jennifer Coolidge), and in order to bring peace back to Gnarnia these four bumbling mortals will have to join forces with a charismatic pirate, a painfully sincere group of aspiring wizards, and one particularly libidinous lion. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Released: January 26, 2007Directors: Jason Friedberg, Aaron Seltzer*****The spoof is a very hard thing to pull off: too often they devolve from audience-friendly riffs on popular movies to over the top, campy and ultimately unfunny endeavors trying to pack as many references to other films into a running time as possible. Spaceballs and Blazing Saddles make very well be the best movie spoofs of all time. Why? Both tend to be smarter than normal spoof films and, while going for the lowest common denominator, they never cross that line. Epic Movie can't say the same. It crosses the line, can't be shown to a family audience and comes across are nothing more than mean spirited, not to mention devoid of any real creativity.A plot synopsis would be foolish, as would be a list of the movies spoofed in Epic Movie. Let's just say the plot resembles The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, showcasing three teenagers who find their way into Gnarnia via a wardrobe while hiding from Willy Wo ... " [More]

"Cinematic parody as it once was is dead. And after much searching and researching, I have found the murderer of this under-appreciated sub-genre of filmmaking. It’s Waldo. Oh sure, the bespectacled, striped-ski-cap-sporting little geek likes to appear anonymous, but I am positive he is to blame for the current slate of “Movie” movies: “Epic Movie,” ”Date Movie” and, most recently, “Superhero Movie.” If he’s not guilty, ask yourself this, why is he always hiding? You see, it is my assertion that the latest generation of filmgoers was weaned on Waldo in their youths. At an early age, they were trained to snoop and search page after page for the skinny little dweeb, and they approach these films much the same way. “Hey, there’s Borat!” “Oh, that’s a reference to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’” They do not concern themselves with narrative, character development, plot, rationalit ... "I had nearly forgotten about The Onion Movie. The sketch-comedy-formatted film spin-off of the brilliant newspaper satire was made about four years ago and then was abandoned by original distributor Fox Searchlight. According to Wikipedia, it performed badly with test audiences, and when it was shelved and then dropped by the studio, the filmmakers — co-directors Tom Kuntz and Mike Maguire and screenwriter Robert Siegel (formerly editor of The Onion) — also walked away from the project. It spent the next few years involved in attempted rescue operations by New Regency and actor-writer Scott Aukerman (Run Ronnie Run!). Now, finally this trailer has shown up on the DVD of Fox Searchlight’s The Darjeeling Limited, implying that the studio will be dumping it to DVD sometime this year. As you can see, there was good reason for Fox to have initially distanced itself from the movie. It makes the similar-structured The Kentucky Fried Movie look like a masterpiece (I understand it’s conside ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Liberace jokes never go out of style. At least that’s what writer-directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer apparently were thinking while making Epic Movie, the spoof film that should finally prompt Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker to knife their eyes out. Infinitely more unbearable than last year’s pretty-bad Date Movie—which also featured a Friedberg-Seltzer script—this parody of blockbusters also attempts to milk punch lines out of “hilarious” topics such as gay marriage, hurricane relief, and, for the boomers in the audience, The Love Boat. The greater misfortune is that the filmmakers’ idea of lampooning movies such as The Chronicles of Narnia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and X-Men: The Last Stand is simply to copy set pieces, throw in some look-alikes, and, inexplicably, have them break into hip-hop dance routines. (Hint: Taking inspiration from seasoned and popular comedy sources like Saturday Night Live’s ... " [More]

"As soon as I saw the trailer, I said to myself "I'm going to see that." I find out later that it comes out on my birthday. So me and my friends get tickets, hoping to see a truly funny movie. We weren't disappointed. It's one of the best movies I have ever seen. Most everyone says that it's horrible, but I can't see why. This movie is closer to perfection than I can describe in words. Definately worth it. " [More]

"I told them. I told them both."We have three free rentals from Blockbuster, " I said. "Yes, it's Tuesday, and that means new releases. But," I concluded, "you do [i]not[/i] want me to get Epic Movie."But I was outnumbered two to one. Overruled. I should have said something. I should have just not wasted a perfectly good free rental. But alas, I care too much about my wife and my brother. So I rented Epic Movie. The "unrated" DVD (more on this subject to come later today) had a 93-minute running time, some six minutes longer than the theatrical release. I hoped it was funny. If not, it was only an hour and a half - a pretty short movie considering some of the epics I've seen. And that was just the first thing wrong with the movie. If you're going to make a spoof (and this one is a spoof, not an homage) about epic movies, you should probably try and mimic the epic movies you're making fun of. The Lord of the Rings trilogy ran about ten hours, and that' ... " [More]

"Have you ever seen Murder By Death? I have. I watched it last night. It's a "dinner-and-a-murder" caper written by Neil Simon. Really, it's almost a spoof of capers, but that's a hard call to make because capers are spoofs of murder mysteries. Or homages. One of the two.Where's the distinction? Where does one cross the line between spoof and homage. Lemme go to the dictionary. My Dictionary tells me that homage (which can be pronounced "hom-ij" or "ohm-azh") is "respect or reverence paid or rendered" and that a spoof is "a mocking imitation of someone or something, usually light and good-humored; lampoon or parody." So the difference is respect?I beg to differ. A spoof can be respectful. Look at The Naked Gun: From the FIles of Police Squad. The Zuckers and Jim Abraham (ZAZ as they have been known to be called) are clearly poking fun at cop movie and TV shows (since Naked Gun started out as Police Squad, a thirty-minute television program that only lasted ... If forced to watch any entry in Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg's [Fill in the Blank] Movie franchise, the best (and only) way to stay entertained is to make a game of pinpointing the most recent cultural spoof, thereby identifying just how recently they coughed out the shoddy script. In the disastrous Epic Movie, that would be a Borat joke, meaning the script was probably submitted sometime in November for a January release. Boy does it show. Even if they claim to be lampooning a particular genre, these films are more interested in a particular window of time -- hence the inclusion of decidedly non-epic films like Snakes on a Plane and Talladega Nights in Epic Movie's slate of targets. The jokes are so brainlessly simple, only by aiming them at the most recent Hollywood releases is there any chance they'd seem fresh -- and even that is quite optimistic. Simply put, this is lowest common denominator filmmaking, produced on a shoestring using actors whose hunger for a paycheck is downright embarrassing. That Jennifer Coolidge and Fred Willard didn't learn their lesson from the abomination known as Date Movie is a sad commentary on what funny actors must do to make a living -- it's the equivalent of Eugene Levy appearing in every last straight-to-DVD American Pie sequel. Discussing this slapdash production in any detail is too generous, as it gives the false impression that the film succeeds on any level. However, to dismiss it entirely ignores its $19 million opening weekend take, which indicates there are certainly viewers content enough to guffaw over such cut-rate obviousness. If any of them remembered the sublime beginnings of the parody genre, such as Airplane!, they wouldn't give this film a dime. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
