Directed by Mike Binder.
A chance run-in with an old college roommate becomes the catalyst for healing in writer/director Mike Binder's tale of friendship and understanding in post-9/11 New York. When the Twin Towers went down on that fateful morning in 2001, Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) lost everything that he had to live for. Five years have passed since Charlie lost his family, and now the once-successful and sociable man has become a withdrawn shadow of his former self. When fate brings Charlie and his former college roommate Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle) together once again on a Manhattan street corner, Alan is shocked to see just how far his old friend has fallen. Though on the surface it would appear that Alan has it all, the pressures of his family and career have been weighing heavily on the successful dentist and loving father's shoulders as of late. At that pivotal moment when Charlie and Alan both needed a trusted friend to help them work through the seemingly insurmountable challenges they face in life, the restorative power of a rekindled friendship provides just the lifeline needed to move forward into the future with hope and optimism. Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler, Saffron Burrows, and Donald Sutherland co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"I disagree with the All Movie Guide: this film is not a stinker and not a waste of talent or subject. I’d been a little reluctant to see it because I feared it might lean too far in the direction of World Trade Center and shamelessly go for the emotional jugular. 9/11 is emotionally affecting enough; there’s no need to push or manipulate us into the “correct” emotional response, thank you. But the reluctance was unfounded. The film has some flaws but is well-written and appealing. I was never a fan of Adam Sandler’s comedies; he can certainly be funny but in general his comic films have left me cold. He’s turned out to be a talented actor, however; in particular I’d point to Spanglish, Punch Drunk Love and now this film in evidence. What I liked about the film was its focus—not the tragedy of 9/11 but one man’s groping for a way to deal with his part in that tragedy in his own way and time (without the well-meaning but wro ... "By Tricia Olszewski Flannel Pajamas is all about the red herrings that get ignored when a seemingly fabulous new relationship begins. The New York couple in this drama by writer-director Jeff Lipsky hit it off on a blind date and swooningly hasten to their wedding. He can save her from her bathtub-in-the-living-room apartment and says he wants to protect her; she can, uh, say that she loves him a lot, especially when he’s paying her bills. He doesn’t like her best friend and some of her family, but so what? They have luv—which, some allege, is all you need. Except when it isn’t, of course. And especially when it’s unclear to an observer what draws the pair together in the first place. From the opening scene that shows the fateful first date, Stuart (Justin Kirk) comes off as slick and smarmy, while Nicole (Julianne Nicholson) seems kind of dim. Other characters crowd the setup—it’s a double date, and Stuart’s brother and Nicole&rsqu ... " [More]

"Reign Over Me starring Adam Sandler (Billy Madison, Mr.Deeds) & Don Cheadle (Crash, Hotel Rwanda) tells a touching story about a man named Charlie (Adam Sandler) who lost his wife, 3 kids, and dog on September 11,2001. When Don Cheadle meets up with Adam Sandler they get to re-connect because they were collage room-mates.Now in this film, Adam Sandler does not want to think about the loss of his family. Infact he trys to totally forget about it, thinking that it never happend. In one scene of the film you see Adam Sandler & Don Cheadle coming out of a old movie theater laughing. You think everythings alright and they'll get some chinese food, but all of a sudden Don Cheadle's wife calls and tells him that his father died. When Don Cheadle tells Adam Sandler that his father dies it reminds Adam about his family. So Adam tells Don "oh lets go get some breakfast." But Don Cheadle comes back home. In another scene Adam tells the whole story about how he lost h ... " [More]

"i liked this movie more than i thought i would. i loved the opening shot that follows Charlie (Adam Sandler) on his scooter at night. the music throughout is also perfect. it's not a great movie and sometimes it's unbelievable but it's also interesting. people say and do things you don't expect. i believed these two were friends, or used to be. anyway, don't see it for Adam Sandler (who is pretty annoying throughout) but see it for Don Cheadle, who is amazing and funny. it's his story as much as Charlie's, as he has problems too and isn't very happy with his life. the scenes of him at work in his upscale dentist office were my favorite. after this movie i made a list: get some Chinese food.put new/better songs on my iPod.pull out the Mel Brooks movies. is neutral about it.
What a wasted opportunity this movie represents. Its central subject - the trauma of a 9/11 survivor who loses his wife and daughters in one of the infamous World Trade Center plane crashes - is a potential goldmine. The producers also made a potentially rewarding decision via the unusual choice to tap gifted Adam Sandler for the central portrayal of widower Charlie Fineman and the magnificent Don Cheadle as Sandler's long-estranged best friend, Alan. Some combinations seem foolproof. Writer-director Mike Binder, however - whose very best work feels as grossly uneven as this - finds a way to royally muck it up, as his script never enables the audience to truly and deeply empathize with Fineman. The filmmaker obviously wanted to avoid the heavy handed pathos risked via onscreen depictions of Charlie's initial September 11th crisis - depictions that could have turned the film into a real heartbreaker and begged sympathy. Instead, he travels to the opposite extreme, with a character so cryptic, so remote, so removed from any audience empathy, that it obliterates the tone of the film, and halfway through we suddenly realize that we couldn't care less about Charlie - an unusual but absolutely unforgivable flaw for a film about a 9/11 victim. Moreover, if the picture's first hour at least qualifies as watchable, the film suddenly loses its narrative momentum about an hour in and turns into a real clunker, sinking into a such a mire of depression that it feels unbearable; it runs about 45 minutes too long. Binder's decision to fork off the narrative into an awful subplot about the Fineman character's institutionalization during the last hour (and the director/scripter's questionable resolution - romantically pairing the Charlie character up with a partner who has more issues than he does) suggests that Binder may have felt ill-equipped to further explore the gradations of Charlie's friendship with Alan, and instead opted to introduce some narrative distractions. The producers enlisted a magnificent supporting cast - including Liv Tyler, Melinda Dillon, Donald Sutherland and Robert Klein - all feel tragically underused. Binder and co. netted some enthusiastic reviews, perhaps because some critics felt afraid to speak negatively about a 9/11-themed film. Do not be fooled by the scattered praises: this one's a stinker. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
