Directed by Paul Brickman.
Risky Business is the film in which 19-year-old Tom Cruise dances around his living room in his underwear. He does this to celebrate the fact that his parents have left him alone while they go on vacation. Somewhere along the line, hooker Rebecca De Mornay, fleeing her vicious pimp, hides out in the Cruise manse. Things go from bad to worse to as Cruise inadvertently drives his father's Porsche into Lake Michigan and nearly scuttles his college recruitment interview. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"LegendRated: PGDir: Ridley Scott Starring:Tom Cruise as JackMia Sara as Princess LilyTim Curry as the Lord of Darkness By Rob Rector Past Memories: In my hometown, there was a gaming store much similar to the “Android’s Dungeon” in The Simpsons. And while there were no morbidly obese employees, they were still woefully hopeless and socially palsied. But they were the gatekeepers for us – ‘us’ being my fellow Dungeons & Dragons-playing geeks, who would walk from our houses when the promise of a new edition of “Dungeon’ magazine would hit the shelves, or the latest 12-sided dice were unveiled to a chorus of breathy gasps. For children of the 80s, there was no ‘World of Warcraft’ in which our medieval-fueled fantasies could be embodied by walking-talking computer-rendered likenesses. It was left to imagination and free time – both of which were in overstock to a suburban, middle-class kid. Perhaps this is why &lsquo ... " [More]

"1982 may have been the greatest year ever. At least for a 9 year old movie geek it was. Sure, '81 brought us the births of Indiana Jones and Snake Pliskin and '83 would wrap up the Star Wars trilogy and introduce us to the glaive and Tom Cruise, but '82 gave us E.T., Fast Times, Rocky III, Conan, The Thing, First Blood, Tron, Wrath of Kahn and Blade Runner . To close out the year was a little movie called the Dark Crystal. I saw a few of these in the theatre, but as I was only 9 (and funds were slim), most would have to wait for VHS. I did get to see The Dark Crystal in the theatre however, most likely because it was from mother approved Jim Henson and company. And really, that's all I needed to know. It was by the father of the Muppets and the voice of Yoda. Does a kid need to know any more than that? For the uninitiated the Dark Crystal follows Jen and Kira as they traverse Thra on a mission to return a crystal shard to the dark crystal so balance will be ... " [More]

"Tom Cruise’s tabloid covers have lined a lot of bird cages, however we saw something fascinating behind his orthodontic masterpiece smile. Once a Hollywood boy-wonder, in recent years he has deconstructed his all-american persona. Now, with the release of the political thriller Lions for Lambs, Cruise tries his hand as studio mogul, heading United Artists. Will it work? What does the future hold for Cruise? "If you’ve ever fantasized about sex on an El Train you’ve seen Risky Business. Tom Cruise’s most famous role if not necessarily his best. Maybe Tom needs to watch this movie again and be reminded that he was once way cool before he lost his damn mind (and abducted sweet lil Katie Holmes). " [More]

"brooke shields,i believe she does mostly tv shows and guest tv appearances lately;and a few indie movies in the late 90s;I liked her in suddenly susan (sitcom), freeway, and black and white; She's played varied indie role that show her different acting ability and those are some good choices;Unlike melissa gilbert which i discussed in the other 80s discussion..mel gibson, also a great director and producer(braveheart, apocalypto ),and a writer too of apocalypto;i just rented apocalypto,i have yet to see it ; and see for myself ,if i like it.tom cruise, never realized endless love for his first movie,he played billy, did he play a big role or a small part;probably have to watch the movie again since it was so long ago;i remember him in the movie that made him more well known risky business ;also taps (1981),that was a pretty good movie that also starred a fave actor of mine back then, timothy hutton(ordinary people, the falcon and the snowman,turk182 was some of my faves back then)I b ... Most well known for turning a very young Tom Cruise into a major box-office sensation, Risky Business is much more than a star-making vehicle. Ingeniously crafted and perfectly acted, the film is a subtle coming-of-age tale that captures the experience of upper-class American teenagers more astutely than any other film to emerge from the 1980s. Playing the naive high school senior Joel, Cruise turns in one of the finest performances of his career. Alongside him, Rebecca De Mornay is equally stunning as the tempestuous and savvy call girl Lana, who convinces her young client to turn his parents' house into a brothel for the local high schoolers. Beyond the acting though, Risky Business paints a tender and sophisticated portrait of sexual awakening and the experience of growing up. Expertly directed by Paul Brickman with a lush score from Tangerine Dream, Risky Business is sleek, satisfying Hollywood entertainment at its best. ~ Rachel Deahl, All Movie Guide
