Directed by David Wain.
Much of the group responsible for MTV's The State - including director/actor David Wain and performers Ken Marino, Kerri Kinney-Silver and Joe Lo Truglio - reunite for this outrageous, irreverent and raunchy sketch comedy, which skewers the Ten Commandments. In the framing sequences, comedian Paul Rudd (who collaborated with much of the cast on Wet Hot American Summer and The Baxter) stands on a black stage with giant Biblical tablets projected behind him, and promises to deliver ten mini-stories, each loosely based on one of the commandments, from "Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me" through "Thou Shalt Not Covet." For all of the storyteller's efforts, however, he is constantly, comically distracted by interferences, particularly those emanating from intrusions by his multiple girlfriends. The stories are nonetheless told, one-by-one, in short film form, beginning with a sketch where Stephen (Adam Brody) goes skydiving with his intended, Kelly (Winona Ryder) but forgets to wear his parachute and gets stuck in the mud, waist deep, which draws gawkers, media, and in time, worshippers. Several of the subsequent stories consist of raunchy, jet-black riffs on sexual perversion, including one about a virginal librarian (Gretchen Mol) entangled in a sultry and messy affair with a Mexican, and another memorable bit about a nutty surgeon who plays a prank by burying a pair of scissors in a patient's stomach and is then sent to prison - where he experiences brutal sexual abuse at the hands of other men. As an added bonus, the picture packs in a fully animated sequence, narrated by several crack-smokers, entitled 'The Lying Rhino.' ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

"The Ten is the first time anyone has ever called me an asshole for taken them to a movie, but the insult was deserved. Anyone who attempts to get someone else to see this crime against humanity is an asshole. The Ten is a collection of (you guessed it) ten short films supposedly about the Ten Commandments. I say supposedly because these movies have nothing to do with Ten Commandments, religion, or anything good at all. For example "Thou shalt not covert thy neighbors wife" is about a new prisoner trying to rape another man's bitch. Prison rape is sooo funny. That is the level of humor in The Ten. We also get jokes about women having sex with puppets, dating Diane Weist, a woman having an affair with Jesus, two black babies fathered by Arnold Schwarzenegger, men having hairy asses, and the fact that people are gay. Lots and lots of jokes about men being gay. As my favorite critic, Roger Ebert, is fond of saying, anything can be funny, but this movie makes the mistake of thinkin ... " [More]

"Last October, we learned that David Wain (beloved director of Wet Hot American Summer) would be taking over the helm of Universal’s Little Big Men, a pre-packaged comedy starring Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Jane Lynch and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad’s “McLovin”). For all of us who love WHAS, The Ten, The State, Stella, Wainy Days and anything else having to do with Wain, it was great news. The script was re-written by Wain and Rudd and Ken Marino, who also co-wrote The Ten, and was adapted (I’m guessing) from the earlier screenplay by Timothy Dowling (George Lucas in Love). And it features some of Wain’s regulars, including Kerri Kenney, Joe Lo Truglio, and A.D. Miles. According to a recent interview with Wain on IESB.net, the film is currently in post-production with hopes of an August release. But according to MTV Movies Blog today, Wain claims his latest film, which is supposed to be getting a new title, won’t be as absurdist as his fanbase is used to ... " [More]

"Welcome to The Media Diet, a new feature on SpoutBlog where we ask indie film movers and shakers a bunch of stupid questions about movies, videos, tabloid scandals, celebrity diet secrets, and other cultural detritus. Up first is David Wain. Wain first skyrocketed to hipster notoriety in the early-90s as a member of The State. He went on to direct the genius Meatballs parody/tribute Wet Hot American Summer, which Wain co-wrote with fellow State alum Michael Showalter. Now Wain has cast a passel of former State-ees in his second directorial effort, The Ten, which opens this Friday. The film, a sketch-driven re-telling of The Ten Commandments, also stars Paul Rudd, Winona Ryder and Liev Schreiber. Click through the jump for Wain’s thoughts on desert island must-haves, comedy based on advertising, and Charlton Heston’s finest hour. David Wain photo courtesy of Yougna Park.
