Directed by Len Wiseman.
An old-fashioned cop emerges to foil a high-tech attack on the country's computer infrastructure as Bruce Willis brings back one of the biggest action franchises in screen history. It's been over a decade since audiences last saw New York cop John McClane (Willis), but now, as the world's greatest criminal mastermind (Timothy Olyphant) attempts to cripple the entire country with an innovative act of technological terrorism, only one cop can insure that the integrity of the system stays intact. In this, the fourth installment of the long-running action series, Underworld director Len Wiseman picks up the torch formerly carried by directors John McTiernan and Renny Harlin to helm a script penned by Mark Bomback. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Live Free or Die Hard: 2-Disc Unrated Edition (2007) ***2 hr. 10 min.written by: Mark Bomback & David Marconi (source material from John Carlin's magazine article A Farewell to Arms as well as characters created by author Roderick Thorpe)produced by: Michael Fottrelldirected by: Len WisemanAs soon as I found out that this movie was gonna be released on DVD in an "unrated" edition, I knew I could hold off seein' it in the theaters. It's not that I craved more profanity or violence, it's just that all the other Die Hard movies were rated R and it isn't the same without those elements that kinda rating brings. It saddened me that director Len Wiseman was willing to "dumb down" the consistency of this film series in order to possible garner more PG-13 money. Didn't they realize that if fans see another Die Hard movie coming out, they're not gonna pay attention to what the rating is? They're just gonna want nostalgic familiarity a ... " [More]

"I know, it's a stupid die Hard Movie. But I liked the first half about the hackers being exploited to design software that could take over all of the nations systems. The film had a lot of problems in the second half but I watched it on a plane and was pretty nervous of how it was going to end, so thats an action movie doing it's job right? " [More]

"Stripper-turned-blogger-turned -Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody has “revised” the script for a new musical called Burlesque. Concieved by Pussycat Dolls co-creator Steven Antin, the musical will incorporate “established songs” into the story of “a young woman who tries to escape a hollow past and finds it performing in a neo-burlesque club in Los Angeles.” So it’s like Flashdance meets Moulin Rouge, with Cody undoubtedly supplying references to Thundercats and “porkswords.” In what The Hollywood Reporter is calling “an industry first”, the upcoming special edition DVD of Live Free or Die Hard will include an extra version of the film specifically for use on computers and mobile devices. The file, which will carry no DRM, will be compatible with all “Windows-based computers or portable video players equipped with Microsoft Windows’ PlaysForSure feature, available from such manufacturers as Archos, Toshiba, Samsung, RCA, Dell and Creative Labs.” So those of us with iPods can suck it. "Bruce Willis. Explosions. Bullets. Defying the laws of physics. If you like the Die Hard series, you're bound to like this one. Kevin Smith is in it, so ALL the cool kids dig it. Oops - pardon me, I puked in my mouth a little. Apart from Silent Bob's cameo appearance, Bruce Willis and company won't disappoint. Timothy Olyphant is slightly laughable as the main villain, but with the exception of Jeremy Irons, don't all of the Die Hard villains pale in comparison to John McClane's sardonic wit and masculinity? Whatever...I enjoyed myself throughout. " [More]

"Giving credence to rumors that have been floating around for many weeks, IFC confirmed yesterday that they’re planning to move away from distributing moderate-budget festival acquisitions in order to concentrate more attention on their IFC FirstTake program. This can only be good news for VOD-loving indie film fans. FirstTake has brought some of the year’s best films to cable boxes, including Day Night Day Night, Lars Von Trier’s The Boss of it All, and current selection This is England; they already have plans to distribute highly-anticipated (by me, at least) festival holdovers such as Hannah Takes the Stairs and Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park. Can you imagine what they could do if they tried harder? Fox has struck a deal with what appears to be some kind of unofficial union called the Writing Partners, designed to lure top screenwriters to the studio by promising that the scribes will earn money off the gross if the movies get made.  This seems to be more thinly-veiled strike hyst ... "I've been adding the tag "one-day" to films I've seen that take place within 24 hours. Movies that take place in real time got the tag "real-time". There's some I'm not entirely sure about though :* Does Roman Holiday count ? I'm pretty sure the time span is more than 24 hours, but it's been too long since I've seen it.* Does Live Free or Die Hard follow the example of its predecessors and take place within one day ? "Live Free or Die Hard falls right in the middle of quality and trash. I love to see Bruce Willis ("Planet Terror") kicking ass. I don't think he's too old. And it has been awhile since I've seen the original Die Hard, but I remember it to be a glorious action film where I was caught up in the excitement. Here, I spent a majority of my time waiting for it to be over. It's supposed to be about suspending your disbelief in a crazy action movie like this, and I could for many of the explosion sequences. However, my husband is a computer guy, so I had a harder time buying into the hacker aspects of the film. Overall, an average diversion, but I hope they let John McClane retire now. " [More]

"I watched Ten Canoes over the weekend with my wife. I'd say we found it enjoyable. I was expecting something like an aboriginal Escanaba in Da Moonlight, and there were some fart jokes which was nice. The great mediator: intestinal gas. I thought it was a little tiresome after a while to be reminded of the cultural gaps which were obvious and easily plucked from the surface. The storyteller did a delightful job of burrowing into the narrative, but the filmmaker's attempts to do the same often left me wishing for color. I realized from the credits that he was mimicking the photography style of some particular photographer, but the rich colors of the landscape works so much better than the bleached stark black and white, that I regretted it every time. I know he was trying to provide another touchstone to avoid confusion among the deeply nested stories, but really, the storyteller had it covered. It came off like overkill. It's a delicate balance of course. The aborigines ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski When John McClane last yippee-ki-yayed for the NYPD 12 years ago, you could bring giant cans of Aqua Net on an airplane and not cause a panic if you left a bag behind on the Metro. In Live Free or Die Hard, however, the sarcastic cop who tends to find himself at the wrong place at the wrong time isn't taking on the Axis of Evil. Instead, he must contend with the revenge of the nerds: Some hackers are systematically taking down the country's computer-based infrastructure, and they can outmaneuver the flummoxed government in less time than it takes you to delete your spam. Underworld's Len Wiseman directs this fourth installment of the nearly two-decade-old Die Hard franchise, which means there are a few big worries. One, star Bruce Willis isn't a youngster anymore. (Fun fact: The films also serve as a history of his hair.) Two, by the time a movie series reaches the trilogy mark, it's usually time to stop the sequel madness. And three &n ... " [More]

John McClane is back in another installment of the Die Hard franchise -- or is he? That's the question that faces moviegoers upon seeing Live Free or Die Hard, a techno-talky popcorn popper that has enough explosions to wake the dead, but very little to do with the esteemed film series by the time all of the terrorists are toast. So what went wrong? Is it the rating controversy that saw the film released as a very un-Die Hard PG-13? That has a bit to do with it, though the main gripe is that this really isn't a film about John McClane. Sure, there are a lion's share of stunts and one-liners, but the crux of the story has little to do with the cop from South Jersey who virtually reinvented the modern-day movie hero. Sadly, he's made to play second fiddle to Justin Long -- a young, sarcastic hacker whose part in the plot ends up nearly as substantial as McClane. Thus the movie essentially boils down to the two characters squabbling in an annoying "culture clash" fashion as they race from one destination to another, with lots of Long typing away at a keyboard and McClane only in tow to beat up the bad guys when they show up. Sound fun? Then maybe this is the flick for you. One thing is for sure though, this ain't your daddy's Die Hard. To compare this sucker is to kill it. While it's never too easy to reboot an older franchise for modern audiences, Live Free does just enough to forget what came before it that it invites the critique. Bruce Willis has said that he despises the second film for giving too many nods to the original, but at least it acknowledged it. Here, the only thread of continuation has to do with McClane's family -- his estranged ex-wife and a daughter who gets annoyed by him, yet calls for daddy as soon as she gets stuck in an elevator! Does the government or the boring baddie (played with zero zest by Timothy Olyphant) even recognize that this is the same guy that thwarted three, count 'em, three terrorist attacks? No, not really. It's a point that thrusts the entire series into "lone wolf" territory, where McClane now has adventures that don't necessarily have to do anything that came before. As soon as this is understood, viewers can either tune out or just not give a hoot and enjoy the big pretty explosions. And to be sure, there are plenty of those. In fact, take away any Die Hard references and this becomes a fairly forgettable summer excursion. The action is nice and at points, over-the-top, but never once is it gripping, just as the humor balances between light and cranky, but with techno-babble that is far too verbose. Casting is another problem, with memorable faces standing in for air-filled characters that the screenwriters didn't bother to invest time into. Additionally, director Len Wiseman does an admirable job of forgetting his Matrix rip-off roots, though his bland blue-hued color schemes and geographically challenged action still has a ways to go to compete with a heavyweight like John McTiernan. In the end, when all the gun shells are collected and freeways fixed, it's pretty obvious that Live Free was half-heartedly tailored to fit the franchise's mold, which is really too bad, because John McClane deserved better...and so do audiences. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
