Directed by Johnny To.
Acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker Johnny To returns to the characters of his international success The Mission (aka Chueng Fo) with this action-packed thriller. It's 1998, and the Portuguese colony of Macau, a city along the Southern coast of China, is about to be handed over to Chinese authorities under a long-standing agreement. As the people of Macau ponder how their new leaders will deal with the criminal underground that's long been part of the city's support system, a pair of hit men from Hong Kong arrive in town to execute a gangster who has turned his back on the syndicate to make a new life for his wife and children. While the Chinese syndicate want to be sure he doesn't share anything he learned while in their employ, two strong-arm men also arrive in Macau, determined to see to the former gangster's safety. Starring Nick Cheung, Simon Yam and Francis Ng, Exiled received its world premiere at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Exiled, for lack of a better term or catchphrase, has been marketed as the direct sequel to The Mission, arguably one of the best "heroic bloodshed" films released in the past fifteen years (not including A Bittersweet Life) It is not, I believe; that said, it has all of the great Johnny To filmic signatures, i.e. the great framing, gunshots parced out like notes on a music scale. Hard guys doing what needs to be done without a moment's hesitation. However, it did not resonate as I though it did (Breaking News, with its great opening 7 minute shot, was more spectacular but it seemed to be doing more - - a commentary on the overglutted media coverage surrounding any event of note). That said, about 7 1/2 stars out of ten. Anthony Wong was great as was Lam Suet, but Simon Yam (who know can overact and has many times in the past) needed to tone down his chomping on the drapes that were flying all over the place in this film. "I saw this movie during the SXSW Film Festival. I didn't know much about it going in, but was pleasantly surprised. I found it a little hard to follow the relationships between the characters at times, but it certainly didn't affect the enjoyment of the movie as a whole. The overall style of the movie was a refreshing change. It was done in a much more interesting manner than most American movies, without being just another Asian action film. Plus, being set in Macau just before they returned to Chinese rule adds an extra bit of interest to the film. I will probably watch it again when it comes out on DVD just to fill in the pieces I missed on my first viewing. " [More]
