Directed by Dan O'Bannon.
Middle-aged family man Frank (Jim Karen) trains teenaged Freddy (Thom Matthews) for his new job at a medical supply warehouse. In an effort to impress and frighten his young charge, practical joker Frank reveals that the warehouse basement contains a cannister full of a mysterious chemical capable of bringing the dead back to life. It seems that the cannister fell off the back of an army truck during an accidental outbreak of zombiedom. Frank and Freddy unwittingly inhale the chemical and release it into the warehouse. Turning to the operator of a nearby crematorium for help in destroying the suddenly undead specimens that surround them, they unwittingly awaken the residents of a nearby cemetary just as Freddy's pals arrive to party amidst the headstones and wait for their friend's shift to end. Meanwhile, Col. Glover (Jonathan Terry) waits for the call that his missing chemical weapon has been unleashed. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

"I just got Black Sheep in the mail today and am going to watch it this weekend, it sounds great. Anyway, I have to say that in Return of the Living Dead when that half dog starts panting and wagging it's little half zombie tail, I just laugh every time, it's one of my favorite parts in the movie, and then when he starts beating it with a crutch or something and the dog yelps and yelps, it was soooo funny. And in Night of the Creeps, that movie is hilarious too. The doggie zombie didn't have much of a part though...I really can't think of any others either. " [More]

"Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! My bad! I had my calender on the wrong page! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... "Well, in MOST movies zombies have a way to smell the living and that is what draws them to the houses or bomb shelters, etc. Now in Shaun of the Dead, Noise is what attracted the zombies. So I guess it's just a toss up, but zombies in Return of the Living Dead and Night of the Living Dead, and Zombi, etc. would have KNOWN you were alive and you could not have fooled them.Froggy you have got to see Undead, after seeing that movie, I think we could survive pretty well. It's usually people with good common sense and that can keep their cool in any disaster. We fit that to a T. Now Doc is just the ultra survivor, he's got the common sense, keeps his cool, knows how to fight and use weapons...etc. What is that saying, a woman is like a tea pot, you don't know your strength until you get to the boiling point? or whatever that saying is... "That is AWESOME, Ms. June. I think I will have to make a note of all these tips for when the immediate apocolypse rolls around, which, by the way, seems to want to happen very very soon. I also wanted to throw in the fact that, as we have seen from Return of the Living Dead, burning zombies causes many more problems than just flaming undead lighting you and your chums aflame. It also causes acid rain that HURTS, for one, and, for two, reanminates those pricks already pushing up daisies. You wouldn't think a zombie would have such an effect on the environment, but apparently they do. Funny how that works... " [More]

"There are some movies out there with WICKED make-up effects. For instance, pretty much anything having to do with Tom Savini. But what are some of the best make-up effects (specifically for zombies) you have seen? I have to say, I praise those who at least TRY to make someone look like a zombie. It must be very frustrating trying to get someone to look like their limbs are falling off without the person's limbs ACTUALLY falling off. Wow... that's so morbid...Anyway, one of my favorite zombies is the "Tar Man" in Return of the Living Dead. He is all sorts of gross and drippy, but he kind of reminds me of a little kid in that he gets all intrigued by the screaming people around him, then grumbles, "Brains?" as a question, like a child would question its pronunciation of a word or something of the sort. I remember watching a little Featurette where the filmmakers talk about the "Tar Man". They say something to the effect of, "Yeah. We pretty much spent most of our ti ... " [More]

"One of my favorite little scenes in Return of the Living Dead is when the gas is first released and they go upstairs and hear a dog whining then on the ground you see half of a lab dog laying on the floor and wagging it's little half tail. I love how they get a broom or something and start hitting it and it just yelps. " [More]

"Oh yeah! And Return of the LIving Dead! That movie is great. I like the sequel, too, conveniently titled Return of the Living Dead Part II. The part in the chapel where the 30-year-old-playing-an-18-year -old guy convinces his girlfriend to let him eat her brain is CLASSIC. " [More]

lost interest.
Like George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, whose central premise it loosely reworks, this seemingly standard-issue gore-fest offers more than meets the eye. It's not a genre-defining masterpiece like the source of its inspiration, but it is a relatively clever popcorn flick with more gruesome imagery and self-aware humor than most such films that glutted the mid-'80s marketplace. The punk rock trappings of its young cast were years out of date by the time of release -- just like in the John Hughes movies that ruled the multiplexes at the time. And in many ways, Return of the Living Dead comes off like The Breakfast Club, dressed up, or down, in dingy horror movie threads. Played with a knowing wink and a splash of special effects, juvenile-delinquent stereotypes provide a convenient framework for the inevitable escalation of cannibalism and thrills. By positing that the original Night of the Living Dead was based on a real incident involving a chemical that turns human corpses into brain-thirsty monsters, director/co-screenwriter Dan O'Bannon gets to thread in a slyly humorous subplot about a vigilant army officer. Even better is the campy dialogue of the titular zombies and the queasily funny set pieces. One sequence involving a warehouse full of medical specimens suddenly come to life gives rise to the indelible image of a "half-dog" and an angry butterfly collection -- surely worthy twists on a concept Romero himself revisited again and again. ~ Brian J.
