In the final episode of the Star Wars saga, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) emerges intact from the carbonite casing in which he'd been sealed in The Empire Strikes Back. The bad news is that Solo, together with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), is prisoner to the grotesque Jabba the Hutt. But with the help of the charismatic Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), our heroes and our heroine manage to escape. The next task is to rid the galaxy of Darth Vader (body by David Prowse, voice by James Earl Jones) and the Emperor (Ian McDiarmid), now in command of a new, under-construction Death Star. On the forest moon Endor, the good guys enlist the help of a feisty bunch of bear-like creatures called the Ewoks in their battle against the Empire. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Comic-Con 2008: Jabba the Hutt’s New Muse Remember how amazing Carrie Fisher looked in that metal bikini when she was chained to Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi? Have you ever thought about the how she looks extra good because her body is in every conceivable way the total opposite of Jabba the Hutt’s body? That’s all I have to say about this photo. " [More]

"An interesting thing happens when you study the arc of Westerns: one narrative template begins to inform the next. An example: The cattle drivers tame the land and pave the trails at the end of Red River. However ten years later those same cattle drivers are the jerks kicking the Homesteaders off of "their land" in Shane. A supposed "happy ending" results in a very real problem. Name a happy ending from one movie (the cause) and how it informs the problem of a second film (the effect). Like this: Sure the rebels win at the end of Return of the Jedi. But then what? The land is now lawless. Tribes will begin to splinter and argue over the new law. Power must be consolidated to ovoid further conflict. In the wake of war will the war hero remain noble or give in to the dark side and take advantage of the war torn lands... which is the plot to MacBeth (although I prefer Throne of Blood). Be as creative as you can! Show us how that happy ending actually has unforeseen conse ... " [More]

"The Science Fiction Top 10 is notable for having what is arguably the least disputable number one on all of these lists in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Even after two decades, the film remains gorgeous and convincing-looking, and still capable of provoking debate about technology, the nature of intelligence, and humanity's identity and place in the universe. It has left an indelible mark on how the future, and how space and space travel, is visualized and imagined, especially, but not exclusively, on film. It's a masterful work, and it's difficult for me to think of a more deserving selection for the top of this list. At the same time, this Top 10 has its share of both puzzling selections and curious absences.E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) at number three leaves much to be desired. Not only does the movie not hold up to repeated viewing, but it also barely qualifies as science fiction. True, the AFI's definition of this genre calls for “imaginative speculation”, but it also sta ... " [More]

"After Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, it was clear that George Lucas had something hot in his hands. At this point, Lucas was under some pressure, and it would've been easy to produce a followup that was a disaster and let everyone down. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi shows Lucas' ingenuity: he combines the best elements of the previous two episodes and produces a movie that is not only technologically advanced, in terms of special effects, but ties the loose ends together in a consistent whole. The plot is similar to Star Wars: A New Hope. The Evil Empire has built a new killing machine, much more powerful than the Death Star (even though it has the same weak points as far as blowing it up is concerned). The Rebel Alliance must destroy it before it destroys them. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), along with Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), C3PO (Anthony Daniels), and R2D2 (Kenny Baker) tie up t ... "1982 may have been the greatest year ever. At least for a 9 year old movie geek it was. Sure, '81 brought us the births of Indiana Jones and Snake Pliskin and '83 would wrap up the Star Wars trilogy and introduce us to the glaive and Tom Cruise, but '82 gave us E.T., Fast Times, Rocky III, Conan, The Thing, First Blood, Tron, Wrath of Kahn and Blade Runner . To close out the year was a little movie called the Dark Crystal. I saw a few of these in the theatre, but as I was only 9 (and funds were slim), most would have to wait for VHS. I did get to see The Dark Crystal in the theatre however, most likely because it was from mother approved Jim Henson and company. And really, that's all I needed to know. It was by the father of the Muppets and the voice of Yoda. Does a kid need to know any more than that? For the uninitiated the Dark Crystal follows Jen and Kira as they traverse Thra on a mission to return a crystal shard to the dark crystal so balance will be ... " [More]

Considered by some a mild failure after the tantalizingly unresolved and morally complicated The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi nonetheless was a gigantic box-office hit and a beloved conclusion to the trilogy that would change science fiction filmmaking -- and, indeed, modern mythology -- forever. Overrun by furry Ewoks, the sixth episode in the planned nine-part story represented George Lucas' turn toward kiddie sensibilities, which he would continue in force with the much-reviled Jar Jar Binks character in Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Still, with C3PO constantly getting himself into slapstick jams that inspired endless doomsday whining, the saga had always included silly bursts of comic relief, and the Ewoks only furthered that trend. Paradoxically, Jedi is in some ways the most adult film of the series, delving into the dangerous morass of Luke Skywalker's mounting hatred, including images of rage and emotional torture to rival those of Empire. The improving special effects were the true stars of the third installment, among them a memorable Tatooine clash with Jabba the Hutt's minions, a breathtaking speeder bike chase through the trees, and the climactic battles with the Ewoks vs. the walking battle droids and the Millennium Falcon vs. the rebuilt Death Star. Of course, more soap-opera style revelations continued to reinforce the grandeur of the epic story line. Often thought of as the least effective of the original three Star Wars movies, Jedi's inferiority is relative, to say the least. Lucas' trilogy created such a vast empire of devoted fans that any chance to see laser blasts and light sabers sent them flocking to the multiplexes, instantly forgiving the sometimes hammy dialogue and overly theatrical acting for the opportunity to absorb more of the magic. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
