Mark S. Waters's adaptation of the popular fantasy novels The Spiderwick Chronicles tells the tale of the Graces, a family who must adapt to their new strange surroundings. As the story begins, twin brothers Jared and Simon, along with their sister Mallory and their mother, move away from the big city to a mansion owned by their uncle. When a series of strange happenings suggest that Jared may be causing a number of disturbances, the siblings band together to figure out what is going on. "The Spiderwick Chronicles rises above most family fare in that it boasts a truly interesting and provocative fantasy premise without taking itself too seriously. Yes, there are the customary family issues that set the backdrop for almost every family box-office smash, but this film actually incorporates them into the meaning of the story as a whole. The main character, Jared (played by the always remarkable Freddie Highmore), is much closer with his father who has recently separated from his stressed-out and seemingly depressed mother. And, while most films of this type would take this story line to cliched heights of ridiculous magnitude, Jared's loyalty for his father is instead tested and stressed based on what is actually happening in the main plot of the story, not thrown in to exploit the emotions of the patriarchal audience. And the sub-plot of Arthur Spiderwick (David Strathairn? YES!) and his neglect for his daughter because of his obsessive research in the "fantastic ... " [More]

"The current trend in the past couple of years has seen the release schedule filled with movie adaptations of children’s fantasy novels. From the superb films from the likes of authors J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis these successful adaptations have opened the flood gates in this genre and it seems Hollywood is hell bent clearing the shelves at the local Borders for more script material.I was fully expecting The Spiderwick Chronicles to be another mediocre entry into this genre, but found myself to be really enjoying this movie. Yes its a typical childhood fantasy film, but it stands a bit apart from others like Chronicles of Narnia as it is set in our modern world (and not in Europe either) and retains its sense of wonder and magic. "The Spider Wick Chronicles is an Action/fantasy/drama which centers on a family that moves in there old relative’s house which reveals more then they knew about it at all. This movie is a trip beyond belief. I will take you into a world that some haven’t experienced since childhood. The Spider Wick Chronicles opens the world of your Imagination to the utmost extreme. The Spider Wick Chronicles is like Jumanji for a new age. I would deafeningly recommend seeing The Spider Wick Chronicles. It’s very imaginative and dramatic. It’s packed to the max with peril and action. The Spider Wick Chronicles also has a deal of family trouble and dislike ness. The family consists of twin brothers one who is an outcast one who is smart and neutral and a sister and mother who try just to survive and live. The Spider Wick Chronicles is a really amazing film. The mysterious world was created by life like CGI. The special/visual effects were really cool. The special/visual e ... " [More]

"Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies present The Spiderwick Chronicles. Mark Waters directs this family-scare picture. The stars include Freddie Highmore playing two roles, Mary-Louise Parker, Sarah Bolger, Nick Nolte, David Strathairn, and Joan Plowright. The film also includes the voice talents of Seth Rogen and Martin Short. Chronicles runs 97 minutes and is MPAA rated PG*. A mother, her daughter, and her twin sons move into an old family-owned house after separating from her husband. This dirty, spooky old house in the country is their only real option after the separation. There are bumps in the night and soon one of the boys discovers the secrets of the old house and his Grandfather, Arthur Spiderwick. This is a well-filmed, well-edited and well-acted picture. It’s a solid story, given the ability to suspend disbelief and accept an unseen world of nice and not-so-nice creatures. There are some unexplained portions of the story, but they don’t ... " [More]

"I have recently taken my children to see this movie and can honestly say that I loved it a s much as my children. I am a 28 year old father of an 8 year old little girl and a 10 year old little boy and we went to see this movie and we all loved it. The graphics are great and the plot is eqully as good. I love how movies such as this can give you a kids perspective on life and if your eyes ever closed to it before then it can reopen them to the good things of having a wild imagination. Anyone out there needing a boost in moral and maybe just a fresh perspective on life needs to see this movie. " [More]

Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Larry J. Franco & Karey Kirkpatrickdirected by: Mark WatersWell look at that! English actor Freddie Highmore turns sweet 16 today on Valentine's Day and what is he doing to celebrate? He's got a new film coming out called "The Spiderwick Chronicles"! Not every 16 year-old can claim that! Pretty cool, huh? I guess I celebrated early with him by seeing a screening the other night of this film. It's based on Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi's bestselling children's book series of the same name. I never read them and probably never will but I ... " [More]

Freddie Highmore adds to his extensive prepubescent resumé with The Spiderwick Chronicles, an engaging and occasionally touching fantasy that's refreshing for what it isn't: a 21st century Jumanji. Playing twins, the young actor shows veteran maturity by giving them distinct personalities, instead of forcing audiences to differentiate them by the color of their shirts. That Highmore's work takes top billing in this analysis, rather than the film's fantasy world and digital creature effects, is not a slight to that world or those effects -- rather, it explains why The Spiderwick Chronicles is a bit more memorable than other fantasies intended for a tween audience. There's a solid emotional core here, to complement the sprites and goblins that literally come out of the woodwork when Jared Grace disregards the warnings and opens the titular tome. Feeling abandoned by an absent father, Jared carries on a bristling relationship with his mother (Mary-Louise Parker), and some genuine anguish passes between their characters. Perhaps this injection of realism can be attributed to indie filmmaker John Sayles, whose surprise screenwriting credit may have something to do with the actor cast to play Arthur Spiderwick: David Straitharn, Sayles' longtime collaborator. Fans of the popular books that inspired the film (authored by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi) should be pretty happy with the way director Mark S. Waters has visualized the design details of this world. The entries in Spiderwick's field guide place the viewer in a willing mythozoological mindset, and the characters that spring forth -- while not drastically different from those seen in other films indebted to J.R.R. Tolkien -- are lively enough to help shape and build the story's mythology. The film's February release may have prevented it from growing into a bigger hit, but The Spiderwick Chronicles is satisfying escapism with a lingering presence. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
