Directed by Mike White.
An unremarkable administrative assistant finds her life going to the dogs both literally and figuratively in actor/screenwriter-turned-director Mike White's dark comedy drama. An inexplicably cheerful office worker whose somewhat sad excuse for a life seems to revolve around her pet beagle Pencil, Peggy (Molly Shannon) seems to relate better to her four-legged friend than she does to most humans. Most of her person-to-person interaction revolves around doting on other people's children and treating her co-workers to daily donuts, and Peggy just doesn't find much solace in the company of her know-it-all sister-in-law Bret (Laura Dern) or her anxiety-prone boss Robin (Josh Pais). When Peggy's dog Pencil is taken before his time, the devastated dog-lover is wracked with guilt. Now desperate to fill the gaping void that has suddenly opened in her life, Peggy agrees to a date with her gun-nut neighbor Al (John C. Reilly) that ends in disaster when she begins to suspect that the boorish brute may have in fact poisoned her ill-fated pooch. Later, after adopting every dog at the local pound and transforming herself into an overzealous animal-rights activist, the increasingly unhinged Peggy reaches out to asexual activist Newt (Peter Sarsgaard) in a last-grasp attempt at forming a human connection that is met with casual indifference. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"It appears writer/director Mike White's tom foolery knows no bounds. It is hard to write an honest review for this movie because the viewer is duped by the trailer with the promise of a quirky dark comedy from the writer of School of Rock & The Good Girl (both very good films). Every now and again a viewer will be completely lied to by the marketing campaign in an unforgivable manner. The packaging of the film is much more important to sell the way the producers believe their market audience is, than to be truthful about their product. Adam Sandler's Click was forgivable but surprising at the amount of drama rather than slapstick. Steven "Cock Puncher" Seagal's environmental turn in On Deadly Ground bored us to tears, but Year of the Dog sparks anger. Without any spoilers the movie takes us down the path of a lonely middle aged Molly Shannon whose only companion is her dog. In her search for more to life she finds that her true love lies with animals. What happens after this ca ... " [More]

"I liked Year of the Dog (2007), but, as someone said, it is woefully uneven. The key word there is “woefully,” because the core of the movie (mainly the script) is very good, but the execution is sometimes amateurish. I enjoyed the story, partly because I have a dog, but mainly because it has something worthwhile to say and says it in an unpredictable way. The movie makes the point that everyone is weird in some way, even those who seem extremely normal, and the main character, Peggy (Molly Shannon) is unusual in ways that are not as socially acceptable. Goodness knows, this point needs to made repeatedly in our society! Once Peggy’s little beagle dies of poisoning, do you think she’ll be happy to replace him with a German Shepherd? Once Peggy falls for the animal shelter guy, do you think he’ll reciprocate and they’ll live happily ever after with their dogs? No way! Peggy’s spiral into a nervous breakdown is convincing and believable. Whe ... " [More]

"I'm super behind again.I saw Sylvia on Lifetime, so I'm not sure how much they cut out of the film. I liked the mood and the way the film looked. It seemed to get more and more gray as Plath descended into her depression. Of course, Gwyneth Paltrow ("The Good Night") and Daniel Craig ("The Invasion") gave solid performances as poetess Sylvia Plath and husband Ted Hughes. I liked that as a biopic, it didn't try to encompass Plath's whole life, just the time from when she met Hughes to her suicide. But despite the good qualities, it just wasn't all that interesting.Sublime is further proof that one should never blind buy no matter how cheep the DVD is. The plot sounded good. The day after his 40th birthday, a man goes into the hospital for a routine colonoscopy but things go wrong and the hospital isn't everything that it seems. Creepy hospital. Botched surgery. A recipe for success? Alas, no. The production was good. Very nice lighting and ... " [More]

"Hmm. Saw this last night with the family unit at our local 'cheapie movie' theater, which plays a mixture of 2nd run blockbusters on their last legs mixed with a sprinkling of independant features (I think this one is already on DVD if I'm not mistaken). Not really what I was expecting, but that isn't always a bad thing. I admire all the actors, who all did a spectacular job, but the story was a bit uncomfortable to sit through. It is always a bit nerve wracking to watch a movie in which the main character gradually becomes unhinged, because you have a tendency to see things through their eyes, and on the one hand, you can see why their actions make sense based on their own inner logic, but on the other hand, you can't divorce your own personal feelings from that of the character you are watching, and you find yourself fighting the urge to scream at the screen "STOP IT - what the heck are you thinking?" I was reminded of such films as Scorcese's Ta ... " [More]

"Shannon nailed the part. I liked that fact that she ended up alone, she "dates" men who are extream it helped show the audience that she may not fit with anyone, the charaters are relatable and real which help you cope with Shannon screen. (Pencil is a great name for a dog too) " [More]

"I agree with Miss Jane... Although I totally went into the theater not having a clue what the movie was. I trust my friend, and I have an affection for the Sarsgaard, King, Reilly, and Dern... Unsure, given Shannon's flamboyant past (Superstar, Taladega Nights, SNL, etc...). The shock to me was how she was virtually stripped for the part. Her goof-ball antics along with her make-up, vanished to reveal a true actress. I sat there waiting for the quasi-passionate/semi-uncomfor table scene of intimacy between Shannon and Sarsgaard to take place. And was pleasantly dissapointed when it never took place. How she pretty much held strong to her beliefs and didn't accept the change that everyone wanted her to grab ahold of. Dern, outlandishly psychotic, with her children makes you pray that you allow a nice ballance of reality and what your kids can handle when you are a parent. Overall, it makes you think. Makes you look at what you believe, and if you are really hanging on to tho ... " [More]

"wow, what can i say? not what i expected, but still a very good movie. i expected a dramady, which it was. but i also expected her to fall in love with the guy and live happily ever after with her dog(s). that didn't quite happen, it was more of a "finding yourself" type of movie. i love peter saarsgard, laura dern, and the neighbor in the movie ( i forget his name). i now have new repect for molly shannon and her serious acting ability, which i have only ever seen her in comedy (ie. snl). so you know, very good independent film. i recomend it to those who like the independent/ different/ quirky/ bittersweet/ ect. "I found out yesterday that I have to work 5 to close on Thursday May 3rd, which means I have to work for the midnight showings of Spiderman 3. I'm kind of disappointed, because I wanted to see it at midnight, but at the same time, I LOVE working midnight shows of movies that people are really excited to see. I remember last year I worked for the midnight shows of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and it was an awesomely fun time. Sure, the theater was busy as all-get-out, but the people who came to see the film were really into it all and some were dressed up and whatnot, so that was really great. However, working midnights for movies that nobody really wants to see right at midnight (Eragon and Casino Royale) are a real drag, especially since it means being at the theater until around 3 am. Oh! Speaking of Pirates of the Caribbean, the theater I work at already has tickets on sale for the midnight show of At World's End, as well as tickets for opening wee ... " [More]
