"Fall is my favorite time of year. Not just because it's the time of year when New York City is at its most beautiful, thus reminding us all why we continue in this abusive relationship with it, but because the movies start to get good again after the onslaught of big-budget blockbusters that are only occasionally watchable. People seem to think that, with each passing year, the movies get worse and worse. Well, if you're looking at crap like Transformers (the new nadir of megahit blockbuster quality), then yeah. But there's a whole crop of ambitious, interesting films that come out every fall and - even if they end up being bad - you have to give them credit for trying. Unlike Transformers. So here's my list of 15 films that I am dying to see this fall. Some are already out (and I'm negotiating with my wife to be able to find the time to see them) and some I still wait in painful anticipation for: 15. American Gangster - Ridley Scott might have actually ... " [More]

"The Toronto International Film Festival begins on September 6, and is currently scheduled to showcase 349 films through September 15. I’m only going to be in town for four days, so I’ve combed the schedule and picked out 15 films that I’m going to make an attempt to see during that time. I’ve purposely left films that are going to be at the New York Film Festival off this list; hopefully, I’ll be able to scratch off one or two at Telluride as well. If there’s anything I’ve glaringly missed, let me know in the comments. In alphabetical order: Across the Universe (dir. Julie Taymor, starring Evan Rachel Wood) Which version of Taymor’s long-troubled psychedelic musical romance based on the songs of The Beatles will Toronto audiences see? There’s still no running time listed on the film’s IMDb profile, which could mean that Sony hasn’t figured that out yet. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (dir. Andrew Dominik, starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck) Okay, marke ... " [More]

"Over the weekend, I watched the trailer for Cassandra’s Dream, Woody Allen’s upcoming London-set crime drama, and promptly forgot about it. Probably not a good sign, right? I’m actually fascinated by Woody Allen late-career turn towards class-passing morality plays set in Britain, but this trailer makes Cassandra out to be a muddle of Match Point and generic BBC kitchen sink. I bet there’s some measure of intentional misdirection going on here–after all, Woody never reveals much about his films before they’re seen. Take a look for yourself above. "I’m going to add this to the Bergman Obit Master List in a moment, but I just had to excerpt this great quote from Richard Corliss’ interview with Woody Allen about Ingmar Bergman for TIME. With all the inflation of Bergman’s legacy in the past few days, it’s interesting that his greatest (or, at least, most famous) fan seems determined to prove that Bergman was really just like any hack director: nervous about where to put the camera and neurotic about making money and appeasing the studios. Woody Allen: [Bergman] and I had dinner in his New York hotel suite; it was a great treat for me. I was nervous, I really didn’t want to go. But he was not at all what you might expect: the formidable, dark, brooding genius. He was a regular guy. He commiserated with me about low box-office grosses and women and having to put up with studios. Later, he’d speak to me by phone from his oddball little island [Faro, where Bergman lived his last 40 years]. He confided about his irrational dreams: ... " [More]
